Natural is the new beautiful
Since the crowning of Kara McCullough, Miss USA 2017, I’ve noticed a surge in young women that are embracing their natural curls. Personally, I’ve been a fan of big natural hair since Beyonce debuted “Work it out” on the Austin Powers soundtrack. My eighth grade self, just didn’t know at the time, that I’d never naturally be able to achieve her look, but I still dreamed.
I’m happy to see a shift from pageant hair, in all its teased and sprayed glory, to a polished natural born look. But, some girls are still unsure whether they should embrace their natural curl. Something I recently realized was this, your style in a pageant is never about looking a certain way, it is about showcasing style that makes you look and feel beautiful. For example, a friend of mine commented about how Miss “so-and-so” was beautiful with her hair back on stage, but she was gorgeous with it down.
Wearing your hair a certain way, does not have to mean that it looks terrible if styled any other way. It simply means that putting your best foot forward will require you to style yourself in a way that best compliments your beauty. When choosing hair styles I suggest trying on your wardrobe with different hair styles, and photographing each look. After doing so, compare, then settle on what seems prettiest and most complimentary. I am often surprised with my final choice, because it was not what I envisioned, although it is what makes me look and feel best.
