one of my favorite things about the harkness test is that you can easily imagine it being applied by many monsters & other non-humans to say that humans are too stupid & immature to fuck

and they could use the very existence of the harkness test as solid evidence for this being the case lol

and if you do believe that these considerations are important—even in the privacy of your imagination—you can just imagine any of these characters as meeting the criteria. you know why? because the only place you can fuck them at all is in your fucking imagination

if anyone thinks I harp on this too much and that it's not ultimately important, I disagree

I think it's very important that everyone knows that they shouldn't feel ashamed or be punished for imagining things

it's bad enough that we have to worry about living in societies where the governments & corporations who control our lives are trying to literally read our minds to increase that control

we don't need to also be policing ourselves and each other for things we imagine. yes this includes things that we make fictional art of. yes this includes consensual roleplaying

no this does not include irl nonconsensual actions which we should all concern ourselves with. so annoying that I feel the need to say this, but it's one of the big "but what ifs" that always comes up in these convos ugh

Honestly i think the harkness test, like a lot of things like this are made less effective as a concept by people assuming these are hard rules that apply to all forms of the kink when it makes more sense as like, a good guideline for media where said kink is present.

Like yeah, go wild in your own mind with feral/non-human/etc stuff cause it turns out in your own imagination most things are non-problematic because it's just imagination. But if you're making like a game or a comic that's gonna be posted to social media and is likely to be seen by people who have no idea about the kink, then having an easy to follow guide that boils down to "make sure they are a consenting adult" is a good starting point to get people to feel more comfortable with the premise.

That being said i do 100% agree that fiction =/= reality and you shouldn't live your life trying to make sure even your thoughts are non-problematic cause it's gonna come back to haunt you
