The young man walks through the cavern, his wand in hand. A lumos spell illuminates the tunnel as far as the eye can see. There’s nothing particularly spectacular about the tunnel, aside from its size. The ceiling of the tunnel stands a few hundred feet above, unseen in the darkness beyond the range of his lumos charm. The ground beneath his feet is stone, rugged and covered in dust and dirt. Every few feet or so, he sees a skeleton or a carcass of a big animal: a half of a cow tossed against a wall here, the clean and picked skeleton of a lion there. Still the young man marches on.
The darkness ahead of him is menacing, but the young man remains confident as he moves forward. He hears low growling echoing around, the origin coming from far in front of him. He slowly makes his way closer and closer, deeper and deeper into the caverns.
Time moves on, and finally he sees exactly what he was sent in to find: a beautiful green Chinese Fireball dragon, slumbering against the back wall of the cavern, where the tunnel finally ends. Shocked and awe-inspired by the sight of the dragon, Basil chuckles softly to himself. Suddenly, the dragon moves, slowly waking from its sleep, its giant purple orb of an eye opening and staring at the young man. It stands, rearing its massive head before opening his mouth, a spray of blue flame descending upon him from the mouth of the beast…
Basil awakes with a startle, breathing heavily as his head turns frantically in search of the beast. Yet instead of the dragon’s cavern, he finds himself in the library of Hogwarts, his Monster Book of Monsters open and beneath his head, flipped to the page describing the anatomy of the Chinese Fireball. He looks to his side, his vision still too hazy to truly recognize the person standing beside him.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers, trying to slow his breathing a bit as he wakens again. “I must’ve dozed off…”
“it must have been quite a frightening dream,” replies paige lennox, who is sitting across from him with an ancient looking scroll in front of her.
though paige was notorious for being advanced in potions, the subject that had taken over her interests as of late were poisons and antidotes. so, she was scanning the document, looking intently at the detailed drawings of plants that were long extinct. it seemed that both she and basil were indulging in fantasy.
“were you dreaming about monsters?” she asks, not looking up.
