Journalist and artist Shirin Barghi has created a gripping, thought-provoking series of graphics that not only examines racial prejudice in today’s America, but also captures the sense of humanity that often gets lost in news coverage. Titled “Last Words,” the graphics illustrate the last recorded words by Brown and other young black people — Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and others — who have been killed by police in recent years.

This is my Ultra Flower Beam Collection, I am extremely proud of this work because the concept was very difficult at first. However, once I applied myself came up exactly what I wanted. I began by committing my first stroke to the page. Once I gained some sense of control With Weavesilk.com generative control panels; I immediately knew what I wanted to create. With baited breath I drew another stroke impressed with my own artistic vision and eager for more. In this project my passion for flowers guided my mouse. Using a slightly complicated mathematical algorithm the software weavesilk.com converts user inputs into visual outputs.

I used the same techniques when creating all three of these gifs with the glitch effects. I used Adobe after effects to create a composition with my clips and a glitch video I found on YouTube. From there I placed a displacement map effect over and clip and selected the glitch video to displace the clip. The last step was to turn off the glitch video so that it wasn’t visible. Once that after effects file was rendered, I brought it into Adobe Photoshop to save it as a gif.

To create my gifs, I asked a friend of mine to record footage of random items and me performing small tasks. I decided to use water flow as my theme. The first gif exhibited is of me pouring an infinite cup of water. To create this effect I used After Effects to loop the water in the cup so it appears to never become full. I used a snapshot from the video clip to make everything except the cup still. My second gif is a ball in the pool floating across the screen. This one was much simpler than the last. I duplicated the clip to make the new ball appear once the old one leaves the screen. I put a keyframe on the second clip’s opacity to create the transition. My last gif is of me standing on a post moving my dress so it flows like water. To create a smooth segue for the gif’s loop I duplicated the video, but reversed the second one. By doing this I avoided jump cuts in the gif. Once I finished with these videos in After Effects, I rendered them, and brought it into Photoshop where I saved them as a gifs.
