according to An Immense World, apparently giant squid eyes are, like, UNREASONABLY large, even for something their size living at those depths. the next largest eyes on earth, blue whale eyes, are less than half the size, and swordfish, who live at similar depths as giant squid and have the largest eyes of any fish, have eyes that could fit inside a giant squid's pupil.
eyes hit serious diminishing returns wrt resource costs vs vision quality as they get bigger, so the question became: what the FUCK do giant (and colossal) squid need to see so badly that they couldn't see with swordfish-sized eyes that's justifying that massive energy cost? that nothing else in the deep ocean needs to see so fucking badly??
turns out the one strength eyes that big really have over much smaller eyes is: seeing large glowing objects in water deeper than 500 meters from an appreciable distance.
sperm whales are the primary predator of giant squid. sperm whales don't glow. BUT! water that deep is full of bioluminescent creatures-- these creatures light up when bumped into. something a sperm whale's size is continuously bumping into those critters, it's just surrounded by a glowing field all the time when it's swimming at those depths, visible from a distance-- if you have the right eyes-- as a massive glowing shape. so basically the only reason to have eyes the size of soccer balls is if you live in the deep ocean and your life depends on having a heads up when a hungry sperm whale lurking around
and also I gotta say, the imagery... the huge lurking threat betrayed only by the ambiguous glowing shape of its movements through the water, is really evocative, if spooky deep-sea games aren't already using that to make things extremely ominous then they should really start

AI advertising is like, one of three things. its either "here is a perfect moldable [child] you can make obey you forever and who will never challenge you on things", "here is a [woman] who won't tell you no/will always consent", or "here is a [person] you can turn into a slave for you and you alone" and i think this should be noticed by more people
they should make it easier to get bottom surgery
special mention to how the BMI requirements are horrific and they need to go!
I've been thinking a lot lately about how many trans women I've known who come to realize over time that they experience much more bottom dysphoria than they've consciously understood
I think this is partially a problem of trans women being fetishized, a trans woman's value being equated with her penis, but I think it's also partially a problem of availability. personally if something is difficult to attain then I have an internal reflex to unconsciously convince myself I don't want or need it. for this reason and many others it needs to be made easier
personally it's fucking crazy going through life not even being able to be naked around trusted loved ones or fully have sex because the dysphoria is so bad. it's unacceptable that so many of us have to live like this. it's horrible that for many trans women it's almost impossible to get the care we need. it does not have to be like this
I wound up going off in the replies, but actually I want to put this here too bc I've often heard the excuse that a higher BMI supposedly increases the risk of complications while healing from vaginoplasty.
Even if body weight directly, straightforwardly increased the risk of surgical complications, it wouldn't necessarily make weight loss an appropriate strategy for risk management. It assumes patients have direct control over their weight in the first place (not true) + disregards adverse health effects of weight loss. Your body doesn't know there isn't a ~real famine; your cardiovascular system is just as stressed by intentional starvation.
The overwhelming majority of weight loss is also temporary. Meaning that folks who lose weight for surgery, who NEED be eating and resting to recover, will often start gaining that weight back during recovery. A surgeon who gave a BMI limit in the first place will absolutely then view any complications as weight-related and the fault of the patient.
This is all without even accounting for problems that are a direct result of a surgeon's incompetence with fat patients. Docs spend less time talking with fat patients and are more likely to skip or skimp on physical examination, so they are less likely to catch problems early with a patient who's fat. That's not a health consequence of being fat, it's a consequence of "I've never even seen this surgery done on someone your size because I studied under someone with an even more restrictive BMI limit."
I absolutely do not judge anyone for doing what they have to do to get surgery, and it's worth noting anyway that it's bad, outdated, stigmatizing practice for your surgeon to demand weight loss. That's why more and more surgeons don't have BMI limits! It IS horrible and it DOES NOT have to be like this.
