for balance. the polar opposite of the person I hate is a lovely human being who is incredibly good at chatting with people and noticing and remembering what they get into talking about, such that it's very effective at nudging people to connect with each other with something to talk about. it's someone who's genuinely curious about other people, but also deliberately spends time and energy putting that into hosting little events and stuff with the followthrough of making everyone feel welcome and putting them at ease.

I talked to another friend a while ago about what kinds of people/personalities get into event hosting and shit, bc my god we need them, but there is that noncoincidental draw of folks with egos and/or predatory interests. it's hard not to get pessimistic sometimes so I'm really grateful to know a few people who do inspire a positive image of the future, here

Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

you guys need to be kinder to people you don’t find attractive. it’s getting ridiculous.

i’m fat, intersex, and disabled. so many times if i hung out with someone, their outfit gets complimented but not mine (even if i that person literally picked out my outfit so its not a matter of me just not having a good fashion taste). so many times have people treated other people around me kind but their attitude changes immediately if they have the misfortune to interact with me. i don’t do anything to warant this besides looking different. i get treated like i’m not there or not human. it sucks.

i know this affects more than just fat intersex disabled people. trans people, people of color, women in general, but especially those who have any of these traits or even just don’t wear makeup. dehumanization can be subtle. but we notice❤️

This is the most considerate advice for doing stretches I've ever seen??? Initially I started to go, "...but I can't do that with my knee-" then he showed a way I could do it. I was like... whoa. A video for stretching that is actually considerate towards my disabilities. Astounding and impressive.

Was talking to a coworker today who explained that her grandfather was like Snow White “but Californian. And an old man.” in that the creatures of the forest would follow him around and presumably duet with him.

apparently this is not common knowledge among punk diy sewists but if you’re sewing patches / doing any sewing that requires pushing a needle through multiple layers of fabric, use a needle grip. they’re little rubber things that have excellent grip on the metal needle so you don’t have to pinch the needle as hard. you will save your fingers soooo much unnecessary pain.

there’s two main types. the basic type is just a little circle of rubber that you fold around your needle, and the fancier type is a little rubber cap for your fingertips. they’re very cheap, under five bucks for the fancier kind and less for the basic, and they last forever. you can buy nice ones from your local craft store or steal them from the quilting section walmart idc. if you’re in a pinch (pun intended) and can’t go out, if you have a non-slip mat under a rug, cut off a little corner and that will work decently. please treat your fingers kindly <3

^^^ i spent all night and yesterday compiling information about a "phantom report bug", where people are getting emails from tumblr support about TOS reports they did not file. pjackk was banned off one of these phantom reports, i told tumblr support about it, and now he's unbanned. i think @garaks-padded-bra was also banned erroneously off a phantom report, so hopefully that will get reversed soon as well

PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR PHANTOM REPORT EMAILS. if you spot any, even if theyre old, tell me about them so i can add them to the list (linked above), and report them to tumblr support. POLITELY. tumblr support wants to fix this.

i gotta be real with you guys im just sort of stunned tumblr has been running an open-front ZenDesk form for tumblr TOS reporting this whole time that doesnt require any kind of validation except a fucking email address. this one fact alone explains every single "why did so and so get banned for no reason" event of the past X years. however it is equally baffling that i didnt notice it before now. i would say it is baffling they implemented it in the first place but like i said, the management of their website is verifiably not well

You absolutely could have flapped! People have always existed at every size, and extant garments have major survivorship bias that preserves mostly the tiniest, fanciest things. Looking at vernacular photography from the era shows us tons of people in every shape and size wearing 20s styles.

The thing is, what looks flattering and fashionable to us, now, was not necessarily what looked flattering and fashionable to them, back then.

That said, there definitely was some social pressure to be (or look) slimmer:

But honestly, most people who weren’t Hollywood stars or socialites just kind of committed to the loose, boxy silhouette.
