I made this painting during Louis’s very first solo world tour. It was an incredibly emotional time, I was so proud of him and all he’d achieved so far. What affected me the most however, was the sea of pride flags in his audience. This was a space where I’d be safe and supported by not only the artist I loved, but by the very people around me. My concert was cancelled by covid so I never got to experience this in person, and so I made this painting to mark the pride and hope I felt through seeing it all virtually, via the moments fans shared online.

This is what being a Louis fan meant to me.

It’s been a few years since then, I’ve not been a super active fan of Louis in recent times (at least not to the caliber I was) but when I look at my wall where this painting hangs, it suddenly feels a little…displaced. this space and community doesn’t feel as respective and safe (not not only Louis but each other) as it once did.

I guess I feel quite confused about how we can go from having such a solid, safe environment online and in person, to a fandom wide landscape of constant conflict. and I don’t really know what this little late night essay addition is getting at, but I guess I just wanted bring this painting back as a reminder of what connected a lot of us with each other and to Louis in the first place.
