In the book itās implied that Eddie and Richie have something, but itās never expliciā itās never consummated, actually. Itās implied that the love that they have is more than friendship. Exploring the struggles of our characters, we came up with the idea that Richie was actually gay and he was, like, struggling with sexual identity in terms of being exposed and humiliated because of the trauma that he has with that issue. So it felt like a great emotional payoff to have Richie, once we understand what his struggle is, discover that he always had a thing for Eddie that was never explored or even expressed. I thought it was a great emotional payoff for the character of Richie. It doesnāt actually flourish until the moment where Eddie dies, and we see in Richieās reaction what Eddie meant to him. We see him caress his face. In the book itās pretty open-ended, and it goes maybe both ways. In the book Eddie is about to say something - a lot of people think that heās about to say āI love youā, but he dies before he even can say āIā. I thought it was a super bittersweet moment and conclusion of Eddieās life under the light of Richieās love for him.
Andy Muschietti, IT Chapter 2 Commentary
āI think with Eddie, itās frozen like that. Itās like when youāve known someone forever. [ā¦] Or like when you get together with your siblings. You revert back, because your relationshipās been established at a certain age. Thereās little moments where I tried to play that. [When The Losers Club has its first adult reunion] Richie might be in a place where heās like, āI donāt really care about him anymore.ā And then he immediately gets smashed. He sees Eddieās there. Heās like, āOh, yeah, feelingās still there ā Iām going to get drunk.āā āBill Hader.

And i miss the days of a life still permanent, mourn the years before i got carried away, so now iām staring at the interstate screaming at myself āhey, i wanna get better!ā

We gotta get him out of here, right now! I canāt leave him here like this man. What the fuck is wrong with you? You wanted me to leave him down here, are you nuts?
