love actually
When will we have the conversation that Lily Evans was James Potter, but in different font. Their souls matched. There wasnāt a part of them that didnāt reflect the other. Good, bad, even their neutrals. Constantly in mirror image of each other. Could not escape their fate if they tried kinda love.

Soulmate AU Story Ideas
Because I am complete trash for Soulmate AUs, I decided to try and make a post about them. Hope you guys like it! ā„
ā Soulmate AUs involving measurement
[ Time // Countdown ]
Where for whatever reason, your clock is stuck/frozen/itās not counting down anymore but it hasnāt reached 00:00:00:00 yet and youāre freaking out because this hasnāt happened to anyone before.
Reverse one where the clock starts at 00:00:00:00 from the moment youāre born and stops counting the moment you meet your soulmate, so itās like a reminder that āIt took me 19 years, 11 months, 20 hours, and 13 seconds to meet you, you fuck, and you do it by spilling coffee on me, thanks, now my laptopās brokenāwhat, youāre buying me a new one? Okay.ā
Your soulmate clock is actually a countdown of how long your soulmate has left to live and holy shit you have to find your soulmate soon because your clock says you have three months left (for angst maybe).
Alternate version of above where your clock is a countdown of how long you and your soulmate have left to find each other or else you both will die because the universe is sadistic afāand if you find your soulmate you get to live longer.
Another alternate version of above where you and your soulmateās clocks have each otherās life spans on it but you can give your time to your soulmate if you want to so they can live longer. Again, because the universe is sadistic af.
The soulmate clock is actually something breakable and you accidentally break yours or vice versa.
Alternate version of above where someone purposely breaks their soulmate clock so they can be with someone they fell in love with that isnāt their soulmate/they are strongly opposed to the whole soulmate idea and want to defy the system.
Your clock is counting down too fast (as opposed to everyone elseās) and you have no idea whatās going on anymore.
Itās been a busy week and after finally having some time to yourself, you just happened to look at your soulmate clock and see that itās already at 00:00:00:00 and you donāt know when that happened because you donāt religiously check your clock either.
Your soulmate clock is actually telling you what time it is where your soulmate is currently at (could include AM/PM/time zones or not, for example 3:46:31 MDT).
I already wrote something similar to this but a countdown au where your soulmate has died and you two still happen to meet each other (one is a ghost, one is alive) and the other finds peace after the meeting.
[ Distance ]
Where you actually have a compass instead of a clock, and it leads you to where your soulmate should be.
ā Soulmate AUs involving colors
[ Eyes ]
Reverse colors AU where you can see in color but once you meet/marry your soulmate your world turns black and white, this is how people can tell that married couples really love each other because theyāre willing to give up a world of colors for their soulmate. If your soulmate dies you get to see color again.
Between you and your soulmate, only one of you can see other colors and the other sees black and white. Like you can see all the other colors except black/white/grays, and the other one can only see in black/white/grays. If you two meet, youāll get to see all the colors.
You can see colors but realize that recently, with each passing day, your world of colors is becoming a little duller and youāre panicking because you donāt know whatās going on, or what it means, or if your soulmate is okay.
You can see colors and your world turns black and white but it doesnāt necessarily have to mean your soulmate is dead. There can be other factors that will result in a black and white world like losing eyesight, but you donāt know that.
You will be able to see the world in full color once you meet your soulmate but until then, you can only see the world in the eye color of your soulmate. However, you can alter the color your soulmate can see, for example, by wearing contact lenses. Like if you wear blue contact lenses, your soulmate sees the world in blue, purple makes them see the world in purple and etc. And you realize each day/week you get to see the world in a different color because your soulmate is being all cute and would want you to see every color there is and they probably have a huge collection of contact lenses by the time you both meet.
Everyone is born color blind and their sights are fixed once they meet their soulmate, or your soulmate is blind and you have the choice to give them your sight, but itās irreversible and if they die, they take your sight with them.
[ Hair ]
If you dye your hair, your soulmateās hair color changes as well and you swear the moment you see your soulmate you will choke them because you just woke up with your hair colored like a rainbow and itās your first job interview at a prestigious company what the fuck. Oh, and your best friend just took a picture to post online and waitāwhat, how many likes is that?
Like the above AU but you only get highlights for the dyed color of your soulmateās hair. If your hair color returns to normal, it means your soulmate has returned to their natural hair color too.
Related to the first two AUsāyou decide to get revenge on your soulmate by dying your hair the most absurd color combination you can think of and the exchange goes back and forth until you meet each other. It can be that if you meet, you two can dye your hair without affecting the other anymore.
If your soulmate dyes their hair your fingernails turn into that color (like nail polish?) and youāre hoping your soulmate isnāt bald by the time you meet because itās the fifth time the past two months that your nails have changed colors.
If your soulmate dyes their hair, your eyes turn into that color and you wish your soulmate wouldnāt change it again because you really like this shade in your eyes.
ā Soulmate AUs involving any kind of body mark
[ Tattoos ]
You and your soulmate have identical tattoos on your wrist about the date when youāll meet each other. Place and time can be included (as opposed to the countdown AUs).
Like the countdown AU, an alternate version where itās your soulmateās date of death thatās tattooed on your skin.
Where a tattoo isnāt set from the moment youāre born and whatever tattoos your soulmate gets, you get it too and itās all cool because you kind of like the designs, except you also feel the pain of getting a tattoo and that sucks because youāre kind of in the middle of an exam right now and itās getting harder to concentrate on your work.
You remove your tattoo because you hate the idea of someone dictating who you can be with for the rest of your life and the person whoās removing it happens to be your soulmate and theyāre torn between letting you know and just not bringing it up because you kind of went there because you didnāt want a soulmate and vice versa.
Your tattoo is only half complete and it completes itself the moment you find your soulmate, like if you had half a heart, youād get a full heart on your skin.
Youāre not sure if the other half of your tattoo should end with this personās words, or that oneāsāwait, I think it might end with the phrase of that other person too. Itās just a very open-ended sentenceā¦
You donāt have a name tattoo on your wrist, meaning you probably donāt have a soulmate but you didnāt want your friends to tease you about it so you had a tattoo made on your wrist about some name you picked at random because your friend said she wanted to see it soon. And then somehow thereās a person claiming to be your soulmate and theyāre kind of cute and sweet so you donāt know what to do.
Because the universe is sadistic af, it only gave you the first letter of your soulmateās name.
Your tattoo is like a mood ring, it changes its color depending on what your soulmate is feeling at the moment and youāre not sure exactly what rainbow means.
[ Scars ]
The only way for your scars to disappear is when your soulmate kisses them goodbye.
[ Others ]
Whatever mark you get on your skin your soulmate gets it too so one day, you just kind of just get a sharpie and start writing on your skin. You definitely didnāt expect to get a reply, but you did. Now itāsĀ five in the morning and youāre just about covered in ink and this will be a pain to wash off later.
Imagine the above point but like, your soulmate maybe falls off a bike and you write on your arm what happened, and your soulmate repliesĀ to reassure you everythingās okay. Yes, you always carry a non-permanent marker to write on your skin at all times.
You accidentally fell down the stairs and broke a leg, oh, and fate must love you because it seems your soulmate also broke the other leg (or something else) and whatever happens to the other, you feel it too (no actual injury but you feel the same amount of pain) so now youāre in the hospital and you happen to meet your soulmate in the waiting area.
Wait, imagine the above point but way into the future and youāre about to give birth and your soulmate must be cursing you and rolling on the floor by the operating table or the waiting area screaming murder and punching walls while crying.Ā Also periods, yes periods. Okay, Iāll shut up now.
You can choose to take the pain of your soulmate away. Like if theyāre sick or even if they just have a paper cut, you can choose to transfer the pain/sickness to yourself instead and theyāll heal. You can only do it once you meet them though, since what happens to them doesnāt happen to you, unless you transfer it to yourself.
Like above but what if the pain becomes two times or more worse. Imagine someone afraid of pain, and the other soulmate shouldering everything or maybe you can half the pain your soulmate feels if you canāt handle taking everything on your own.
Alternate version of above two points where you can also transfer your pain to your soulmate. Imagine the payback you can do.
ā Soulmate AUs involving reincarnation
There wasnāt a soulmate system in place before, now itās about a thousand and more years later, andāwait, arenāt you the person that killed me in that back alley?
Where youāre reborn with the memories of your soulmate and you can only get your past memories if you meet each other again in this lifetime.
You somehow find a diary/journal of your old self and read through the contents of how you met your soulmate centuries ago.
Your soulmate was an artist of centuries ago, and currently, youāre an art student at university (or not but youāre taking an arts class). Then one day for a field trip, you go to a far-away museum and you just find yourself staring at what was your reflection, wearing different clothes to fit the timeline but it was definitely a split-image of you, on one of the framed displays.
Alternate version of the above where your soulmate still was an artist of centuries ago but you were there too, and you both were able to meet again in this lifetime. You donāt remember anything but youād be at the museum, looking at the picture that looks like you with curiosity until your soulmate (who remembers everything) comes by and asks you what you think of the painting.
Youāre sent to an insane asylum because everyone is convinced youāve lost your hold on reality since youāre the only one that remembers everything from your past life. Also, that new doctor is your soulmate.
Your soulmate from the past life is not your soulmate in this life.
You become a writer and your series of novels become extremely popular, but what they donāt know is that youāre retelling your previous life where certain circumstances made it so you and your soulmate did not end up together but your soulmate promises to be with you the next lifetime. At a book signing you open the book cover of a fanās copyĀ to see something written on the front page: āIām sorry I took so long.ā
You donāt remember anything from your previous life but your soulmate doesāyour first meeting under the tree with the broken swing in summer, the way you smiled when you met each other again at the start of the school year, your eyes that were filled with such mirth and depth and beauty, even the way your hands fit together like missing piece of a puzzleāeverything, even the gasps for air, the coarse little pleas, the way you stared with a look of betrayal until your bright eyes became nothing but a dull sheet of color at the hands encasing your neck in a vice grip.
You keep going to this place, and you always notice another person here too. Neither of you know that this is the place where the both of you had died/first met in the past life.
ā Soulmate AUs involving dreams
Kind of a reincarnation AU where youāre losing the distinction between reality and dreams because when youāre asleep, you actually relive your past life, and youāre not sure if youād much rather stay in the past or in the present anymore.
If youāre on separate time zones, when you sleep, you see the world in the eyes of your soulmate at present time. You see the world through your soulmateās eyes, what theyāre eating, who theyāre talking to, the contents of the essay paper theyāre trying to finish, but if they look into a mirror/reflective surface/picture, the image is blurred so you donāt really have a clue what they look like.
You see your soulmate in the eyes of their friend instead.
Imagine that soulmates just have this ability to dream together/meet each other in your dreams regardless of whether or not you two meet in real life. Your dreams could then be like a real-life video game, for example, you two could be in a zombie-apocalypse type of dream and you both would try your best to help each other out. If one gets bitten/dies you wake up and your soulmate is there to tell you everything is alright or tease you how you couldnāt shoot fast enough and then youād both go back to sleep and maybe start round two.
Just like the above point, imagine how you and your soulmate could pretty much be with each other even after youād both gone to your separate homes/shared bed.
Your soulmate is dead and the only way you two can see each other again is in your dreams and everyday your soulmate tries to make sure you know they love you and will always be there for you the moment you close your eyes and retire for the night.
ā Other Soulmate AUs
You and your soulmate can communicate with thoughts and your soulmate happens to be a math major and you really need help with this test right now.
On some days, whatever your soulmate thinks of is something you can hear in your mind and your soulmate is currently reading really hardcore smut fics and youāre trying so hard not to mess up this class presentation which shoulders half your mark for the semester.
You get to share the same talents as your soulmate and you probably hit the jackpot because itās the first time youāve ever touched this instrument but youāre quite the professional at it, what? Shredding? I donāt know what that is butāoh⦠hey okay, I just did it I think.
The Red String of Fate exists, and only some people have the ability to see the strings, and these people can actually cut strings and knot other peopleās strings in to alter the soulmate laws. Your best friendās wedding is tomorrow and they know you can see the string. They ask you to help them defy the laws of the universe and help them be with the person they love even though they know thatās not their soulmate. You know they love each other so much so you help them, even though the person your best friendās marrying/your best friend is your soulmate.
How about like the colors AU except it can be your voice or your hearing instead that comes and goes when your soulmate dies. Imagine how your soulmateās voice is the first and the last thing youāll ever hear.
So I decided to just make a post of all the ideas Iāve thought of so far for each theme! I tried to think of things I havenāt read before but Iām pretty sure with tons of people out there, some of these are sure to exist already. I was also planning to write more but maybe next time, my heart hurts already from typing theseĀ ;////;)ā
I hope you guys like it though and please feel free to add on to this or make these into stories please Iāll love you forever and tag me please Iād love to read them.

iāve gotten a lot of requests recently asking me to make a tutorial for my ācolorpornā gifsets, and i think iāve finally gotten over the traumatic incident 3 years ago, when i spent all day writing out a coloring tutorial only to accidentally hit backspace causing the entire thing to be wiped. so, here it is, buckle up folks! itās going to be a long ride but hereās hoping itāll be helpful.
so weāll be going from left side (no coloring) to right (coloring & color porn):

Writing with Color: Description Guide - Words for Skin Tone
We discussed the issues describing People of Color by means of food in Part I of this guide, which brought rise to even more questions, mostly along the lines of āSo, if foodās not an option, what can I use?ā Well, I was just getting to that!
This final portion focuses on describing skin tone, with photo and passage examples provided throughout. I hope to cover everything from the use of straight-forward description to the more creatively-inclined, keeping in mind the questions weāve received on this topic.
So letās get to it.
S T A N D A R DĀ D E S C R I P T I O N
B a s i cĀ C o l o r s
Pictured above: Black, Brown, Beige, White, Pink.
āShe had brown skin.ā
This is a perfectly fine description that, while not providing the most detail, works well and will never become clichƩ.
Describing charactersā skin as simply brown or beige works on its own, though itās not particularly telling just from the range in brown alone.
C o m p l e xĀ C o l o r s
These are more rarely used words that actually āmeanā their color. Some of these have multiple meanings, so youāll want to look into those to determine what other associations a word might have.
Pictured above: Umber, Sepia, Ochre, Russet, Terra-cotta, Gold, Tawny, Taupe, Khaki, Fawn.
Complex colors work well alone, though often pair well with a basic color in regards to narrowing down shade/tone.
For example: Golden brown,Ā russet brown,Ā tawny beigeā¦
As some of these are on the ārareā side, sliding in a definition of the word within the sentence itself may help readers who are unfamiliar with the term visualize the color without seeking a dictionary.
āHe was tall and slim, his skin a russet, reddish-brown.ā
Comparisons to familiar colors or visuals are also helpful:
āHis skin was an ochre color, much like the mellow-brown light that bathed the forest.ā
M o d i f i e r sĀ
Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word. The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone.
D a r k - D e e p - R i c h - C o o l
W a r m - M e d i u m - T a n
F a i r - L i g h t - P a l e
Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pinkā¦
If youāre looking to get more specific than ābrown,ā modifiers narrow down shade further.
Keep in mind that these modifiers are not exactly colors.
As an already brown-skinned person, I get tan from a lot of sun and resultingly become a darker, deeper brown. I turn a pale, more yellow-brown in the winter.
While best used in combination with a color, I suppose words like ātanā āfairā and ālightā do work alone; just note that tan is less likely to be taken for ānaturally tanā and much more likely a tanned White person.
Calling someone ādarkā as description on its own is offensive to some and also ambiguous. (See: Describing Skin as Dark)
U n d e r t o n e s
Undertones are the colors beneath the skin, seeing as skin isnāt just one even color but has more subdued tones within the dominating palette.
Mentioning the undertones within a characterās skin is an even more precise way to denote skin tone.
As shown, thereās a difference between say, brown skin with warm orange-red undertones (Kelly Rowland) and brown skin with cool, jewel undertones (Rutina Wesley).
āA dazzling smile revealed the bronze glow at her cheeks.ā
āHe always looked as if heād ran a mile, a constant tinge of pink under his tawny skin.ā
Standard Description Passage
āFarahās skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summerās sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.ā
-From my story āWhere Summer Endsā featured in Strange Little Girls
Here the state of skin also gives insight on character.
Note my use of āfawnā in regards to multiple meaning and association. While fawn is a color, itās also a small, timid deer, which describes this very traumatized character of mine perfectly.
Though I use standard descriptions of skin tone more in my writing, at the same time Iām no stranger to creative descriptions, and do enjoy the occasional artsy detail of a character.
C R E A T I V EĀ D E S C R I P T I O N
Whether compared to night-cast rivers or dayās first lightā¦I actually enjoy seeing Characters of Colors dressed in artful detail.
Iāve read loads of descriptions in my day of white characters and their āsmooth rose-tinged ivory skinā, while the PoC, if there, are reduced to something from a candy bowl or a Starbucks drink, so to actually read of PoC described in lavish detail can be somewhat of a treat.
Still, be mindful when you get creative with your character descriptions. Too many frills can become purple-prose-like, so do what feels right for your writing when and where. Not every character or scene warrants a creative description, either. Especially if theyāre not even a secondary character.
Using a combination of color descriptions from standard to creative is probably a better method than straight creative. But again, do whatās good for your tale.
N A T U R AL Ā S E T T I N G S - S K Y
Pictured above: Harvest Moon -Twilight, Fall/Autumn Leaves, Clay, Desert/Sahara, Sunlight - Sunrise - Sunset - Afterglow - Dawn- Day- Daybreak, Field - Prairie - Wheat, Mountain/Cliff, Beach/Sand/Straw/Hay.
Now before you run off to compare your heroineās skin to the harvest moon or a cliff side, think about the associations to your words.
When I think cliff, I think of jagged, perilous, rough. I hear sand and picture grainy, yet smooth. Calm. mellow.
So consider your character and what you see fit to compare them to.
Also consider whose perspective youāre describing them from. Someone describing a person they revere or admire may have a more pleasant, loftier description than someone who canāt stand the person.
āHer face was like the fire-gold glow of dawn, lifting my gaze, drawing me in.ā
āShe had a sandyĀ complexion, smooth and tawny.ā
Even creative descriptions tend to draw help from your standard words.
F L O W E R S
Pictured above: Calla lilies, Western Coneflower, Hazel Fay, Hibiscus, Freesia, Rose
It was a bit difficult to find flowers to my liking that didnāt have a 20 character name or wasnāt called something like āchocolate silkā so these are the finalists.Ā
Youāll definitely want to avoid purple-prose here.
Also be aware of flowers that most mightāve never heard of. Roses are easy, as most know the look and coloring(s) of this plant. But Western coneflowers? Calla lilies? Maybe not so much.
āHe entered the cottage in a huff, cheeks a blushing brown like the flowers Nana planted right under my window. Hazel Fay she called them, was it?ā
A S S O R T E D Ā P L A N T S & Ā N A T U R E
Pictured above: Cattails, Seashell, Driftwood, Pinecone, Acorn, Amber
These ones are kinda odd. Perhaps because Iāve never seen these in comparison to skin tone, With the exception of amber.
At least theyāre common enough that most may have an idea what youāre talking about at the mention of āpinecone."Ā
I suggest reading out your sentences aloud to get a better feel of how itāll sounds.
"Auburn hair swept past pointed ears, set around a face like an acorn both in shape and shade.ā
I pictured some tree-dwelling being or person from a fantasy world in this example, which makes the comparison more appropriate.
I donāt suggest using a comparison just ācuz you canā but actually being thoughtful about what youāre comparing your character to and how it applies to your character and/or setting.
W O O D
Pictured above: Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut, Golden Oak, Ash
Wood can be an iffy description for skin tone. Not only due to several of them having āfoodyā terminology within their names, but again, associations.
Some people would prefer not to compare/be compared to wood at all, so get opinions, try it aloud, and make sure itās appropriate to the character if you do use it.
āThe old warlockās skin was a deep shade of mahogany, his stare serious and firm as it held mine.ā
M E T A L S
Pictured above: Platinum, Copper, Brass, Gold, Bronze
Copper skin, brass-colored skin, golden skinā¦
Iāve even heard variations of these used before by comparison to an object of the same properties/coloring, such as penny for copper.
These also work well with modifiers.
āThe dress of fine white silks popped against the deep bronze of her skin.ā
G E M S T O N E S - M I N E R A LS
Pictured above: Onyx, Obsidian, Sard, Topaz, Carnelian, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Pyrite, Citrine, Gypsum
These are trickier to use. As with some complex colors, the writer will have to get us to understand what most of these look like.
If you use these, or any more rare description, consider if it actually āfitsā the book or scene.
Even if youāre able to get us to picture what ārutileā looks like, why are you using this description as opposed to something else? Have that answer for yourself.
āHis skin reminded her of the topaz ring her father wore at his finger, a gleaming stone of brown, mellow facades.āĀ
P H Y S I C A LĀ D E S C R I P T I ON
Physical character description can be more than skin tone.
Show us hair, eyes, noses, mouth, handsā¦body posture, body shape, skin texture⦠though not necessarily all of those nor at once.
Describing features also helps indicate race, especially if your character has some traits common within the race they are, such as afro hair to a Black character.
How comprehensive you decide to get is up to you. I wouldnāt overdo it and get specific to every mole and birthmark. Noting defining characteristics is good, though, like slightly spaced front teeth, curls that stay flopping in their face, hands freckled with sunspotsā¦
G E N E R A LĀ T I P S
Indicate Race Early: I suggest indicators of race be made at the earliest convenience within the writing, with more hints threaded throughout here and there.
Get Creative On Your Own:Ā Obviously, I couldnāt cover every proper color or comparison in which has been āapprovedā to use for your charactersā skin color, so itās up to you to use discretion when seeking other ways and shades to describe skin tone.
Skin Color May Not Be Enough: Describing skin tone isnāt always enough to indicate someoneās ethnicity. As timeless cases with readers equating brown to ādark whiteā or something, more indicators of race may be needed.
Describe White characters and PoC Alike: You should describe the race and/or skin tone of your white characters just as you do your Characters of Color. If you donāt, you risk implying that White is the default human being and PoC are the āOtherā).
PSA: Donāt use āColored.ā Based on some asks weāve received using this word, Iād like to say that unless you or your character is a racist grandmama from the 1960s, do not call People of Color ācoloredā please.Ā
Not Sure Where to Start? You really canāt go wrong using basic colors for your skin descriptions. Itās actually what many people prefer and works best for most writing. Personally, I tend to describe my characters using a combo of basic colors + modifiers, with mentions of undertones at times. I do like to veer into more creative descriptions on occasion.
Want some alternatives to āskinā or āskin colorā? Try: Appearance, blend, blush, cast, coloring, complexion, flush, glow, hue, overtone, palette, pigmentation, rinse, shade, sheen, spectrum, tinge, tint, tone, undertone, value, wash.

āWho wants to be in Slytherin? I think Iād leave, wouldnāt you?ā James asked the boy lounging on the seats opposite him, and with a jolt, Harry realized that it was Sirius. Sirius did not smile. āMy whole family have been in Slytherin,ā he said. āBlimey,ā said James, āand I thought you seemed all right!ā Sirius grinned. āMaybe Iāll break the tradition. Where are you heading, if youāve got the choice?ā James lifted an invisible sword. āāGryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart!ā Like my dad.ā Snape made a small, disparaging noise. James turned on him. āGot a problem with that?ā āNo,ā said Snape, though his slight sneer said otherwise. āIf youād rather be brawny than brainyā ā āWhereāre you hoping to go, seeing as youāre neither?ā interjected Sirius. James roared with laughter.Ā

nakedsasquatch itās ya man
Okay but seriously folks - as often as I joke about this movie stirs my loins and as weirdly popular as this text post got a while back, I wanna rap with you all about why the George of the Jungle remake is a pretty important piece of cinema.
Itās literally the only movie I can think of that is based completely around the unheard of āFEMALE gaze.ā Granted, while Iām a huge movie buff Iāve not seen every movie ever made. But even so, even if thereās another example of the āfemale gazeā in cinema that has escaped me itās still damn impressive that a kids movie from 1997 based on a Jay Ward cartoon from the 60ās managed to turn gender representation in media on itās fucking ass!
First things first, letās look at our leading lady and love interest - Ursula, played by Leslie Mann.
Let me just say that while Leslie Mann is adorable and a talented actress, she does look a little less conventional and a little more plain compared to the bombshells that Hollywood likes to churn out. Leslie, in comparison, looks much more like a real women youād meet on the street. She dresses pretty conservatively and plain throughout the filmĀ ; Wearing outfits that are more functional than fashionable for trekking through the jungle, pulling her hair back and so forth. Not that if she was dolled up and more scantily clad it would give her character any less integrity, but can we appreciate how RARE that is in the male dominated industry of film? Just think about all the roads a film about a woman in the jungle COULD have taken but didnāt - no scenes with her clothes strategically ripped or anything! You can say this is a kids movie, intended for children and thatās why the sensuality of the female lead is so downplayed but there are PLENTY of kids movies that handle women in a very objectifying and sexualized manner despite the target audience is pre-pubescent. Like, a disgusting amount. So I donāt think āitās a kids movieā is why the film doesnāt take ANY, let alone EVERY, opportunity to showcase the main female characterās sex appealā¦
ā¦especially considering the sex appeal of the film rests squarely on the well defined shoulders of our male lead, George of the Jungle played by Brendan Fraser in the best god damn shape of his life!
*Homer Simpson Drooling Noises*
Whenever members of the reddit community try to compare the sexualization of women in fiction to the design of characters such as Batman and Superman, I always want to just sit them down and show them this movie. Because THIS is what the female sexual fantasy looks like, and Batman and Superman are male power-fantasies. Look at him - his big blue eyes, his soft hair, his lean, chiseled physique built for dexterity rather than power. Heās wild and free, but gentle. Itās like he fell right out of that steamy romance novel your mom tried to hide from you growing up.
Hell, the whole plot seems to be designed around how damn hot he is! First, for the majority of the film, he wears only a small strip of cloth to cover the dick balls and ass. Everything else is FAIR GAME to drool over for 40 minutes. Then, after he meets Ursula she takes him with her to San Francisco just so we can enjoy him in a well-tailored suit (as seen in the gif set), running around in an open and billowy shirt along side horses while Ursula and all of her friends literally crowd around and make sexual comments about him, and my personal favorite, ditch the loincloth entirely and have him walk around naked while covering his man-bits with various objects while one of Ursulaās very lucky friends oogles him and makes a joke along the lines of āSo THATāS why they call him the āKING of the Jungleāā¦ā
And yes, itās also a very cute and funny little movie. Out of all the movies based on Jay Ward cartoons, it was the most faithful to the fast-paced humor and wit of the original source material (yes even the new Peabody and Sherman movie which honestly I thought was too cutesy-poo.) But thatās not why this movie is popular with the gay community or why we all became women in 1997. Itās just really cool that thereās a film out there where the sensuality of the female form takes a back seat for the oiled up, chiseled, physique of Brendan Fraser (in his prime that is)
One thing to add: in the scene mentioned above where the ladies are watching him in the billowy shirt running with the horses, it pans back to about 50 feet away to two guys in suits at this party looking at the women and one of the guys says, āMan, what is it with women and horses?ā So not only does this movie highlight the female gaze, but it blatantly points out that western male sensibilities donāt have a clue what actually appeals to women.
ALSO
heās non threatening
as mentioned above, he looks built for dexterity rather than power, but heās still a 6+ foot tall extremely muscular man, and not once are you worried for Ursula when heās with her
ALSO
letās take a look at his rival - Lyle is a cravat-wearing trust-fund kid (who, interestingly, is into Ursulaās fortune more than her, which kind of makes this a gender-swapped gold-digger thing too). Heās blonde and Ursulaās mom LOVES him. Heās more uncomfortable and less prepared to cope with the jungle than Ursula is, in his pastels and shiny shoes.
But he talks over Ursula, insists he knows whatās best for her, ignores her autonomy. In spite of the fact that Lyle Van de Groot is a rich, educated, social climber who cares deeply about his clothing and appearances he is a point-by-point checklist of unhealthy masculinity in a way that beefy, inarticulate, uneducated George could never be. Ursula is off on her own doing her own thing and Lyle hires two FUCKING POACHERS to track her down in the middle of the jungle while sheās working (or on vacation? Itās never made clear because he interrupts her before she can explain why she went on the expedition). Lyle ignores the local guides, claiming his experience with a bridge in Maui means the bridge theyāre on is safe - which leads to a significant injury for one of the guides. He then tells Ursula the guides are conspiring against him, trying to make himself and his poachers seem safe and the Africans who make up the rest of their party seem dangerous.
Check that body language! A post above points out that weāre never worried about Ursula when sheās around George. Thatās because Lyle talks to her like this. Look at his aggressive lean! Look at him literally looking down at her! Sheās tilted away from him in the least threatening position possible and heās so aggressive about whatever point heās making. When he finds her after he pushed her toward a damned lion he kisses her and she pushes him away. Want a textbook example of gaslighting? Here you go: she saysĀ ādonāt get all smoochy with me! I remember what happened with that lionā and he respondsĀ āWhat are you talking about? I was fighting that lion the whole time - you were just so terrified you donāt remember.āĀ Then he shoots George! And then he kidnaps Ursula and attempts to force her into marriage!
Now look at how George and Ursula interact (slightly NSFW):
Even though heās a big strong dude and he thinks heās doing whatās okay he lets her set the tone for their interactions. He accepts that heās out of his wheelhouse and even if he doesnāt understand it he does what she says is culturally appropriate. He learns from her! He listens to her! Compare Lyle leaning into Ursula above to this image of George and Ursula talking:
Heās listening to her, all of his attention is on on her, but heās totally nonthreatening. His torso is turned toward her but heās not invading her space, his hands are clasped, heās smiling, and sheās the one leaning into him. Look at that smile she has, look how happy she is to be listened to. Her posture in both images is vulnerable but in this one with George sheās vulnerable because she has chosen to share with him instead of because she feels threatened.
When George rescues Ursula from Lyle at the end of the film it isnāt a typical damsel situation - George doesnāt have a knock-down-drag-out fight with Lyle, he swings into a tree and offers Ursula a hand so she can reach up and save herself (and before he does it he acknowledges how much itās going to hurt and *whimpers* and looks human and scared). And youāve gotta remember that George rescues everybody. Itās not just Ursula - he also rescues a parasailer and gets shot rescuing Shep and Ape. He just likes helping, dammit!
AND this movie offers a perfect counter to the ānice guyā thing - Ursula starts engaged to a jerk who her mom thinks is a ānice guyā the moves on to actual nice man George who isnāt *just* nice - heās also patient, listens to her, has his own skills and talents, is okay with being goofy, has his own social circle and isnāt totally dependent on Ursula, and looks amazing. Ursula doesnāt go with George just because heās a *nice* guy who rescued her from an asshole, Ursula goes with George because heās an interesting, fun person who is supportive of her different way of being an interesting, fun person. AND heās emotionally available. Google image search George of the jungle and see how many smiles you can find, see how many open looks of confusion there are, see how much sadness you can see in Georgeās face. Now look for images of Lyle. His two expressions are a smirk and cartoonish fear. I know this is a cartoonish kidās movie, but it is SO powerful that the hero shares his emotions while the villain masks every emotion but fear. Lyle doesnāt want to open up, he doesnāt want to be vulnerable, he wants CONTROL. George wants to learn, to protect people he cares about, to explore new places, to laugh when heās happy and to be sad when heās sad, and that he does that while being a broad-shouldered, physically powerful dude who is NOT totally self-involved is justā¦
Like, look, I didnāt sign on to tumblr dot com for George of the Jungle discourse, but Iām just now realizing that this movie may have done the most for destroying my conception of stoic masculinity and gender roles as a child.
