The European Goldfinch in the Empty House Poster

You all have probably seen the poster for the Empty House, which features this beautiful little goldfinch. The goldfinch is mentioned in the episode before, but we now have a clear view of the European goldfinch, which will likely relate to the story. So this bird is probably the britannica subspecies, based on the fact that it's not only in England but in a very urban area. Historically, this bird is associated with both the Madonna and child, and the Passion.

Okay, so why are there so many goldfinches in Renaissance Christian art??? So the main thing is that the bird is a sort of symbolism for goodness and connection with nature, but ALSO: The red on the bird is associated with the death of Christ, which is foreshadowed in many images of baby Jesus. There are a lot of theories about where this came from, but this bird seems to be heavily associated with the passion and the crown of thorns.

So what do you think? Is this bird foreshadowing Sherlock's sacrifice? His temporary death? Is it an omen of bad things to come? Or is it a symbol of goodness?

I'm really interested to see how this bird is used in the podcast, and how it relates back to this story :))
