Flattop #2!!! (August 6)
We lucked out with a great day for a hike for Jeff and Brittany's last great Alaskan adventure! We were able to summit Flattop with great views along the way. We also spotted a moose from the trail, for the only Alaskan wildlife of Jeff and Brit's visit (they were beginning to think that the stories of Alaska's wildlife were lies). It was an awesome sendoff for Jeff and Brittany's trip to Alaska.
Nitro Zipline!!! (August 4)
On a truly beautiful day by anyone's standards, we went Ziplining! The Nitro Zipline is one of the longest Ziplines in the state, over 1/4 of a mile! We geared up and got a quick safety talk, then it was time to commit to the Zip-Line! We had to hike the length of the zipline then climb a three story tower, just to jump off it. If we could have, we would have done it again and again! It was so awesome and we had so much fun! Afterwords, we picked some wild Alaskan blueberries during lunch that I later turned into a blueberry cobbler!
Exit Glacier!!! (August 3)
On a fine Alaskan summer day (55 and dreary) we set out for a hike to Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. It was a great hike, and we had great views of the glacier! Jeff went into the glacier runoff river and fished out a small "iceberg." So even though the river was too high to make it to the toe of the glacier, we got to hold a piece of exit glacier. After the hike we stopped to grab a bite on the way home, after dinner Brit got upset she couldn't drive us back to the fudge shop we passed earlier.
Denali Flightseeing!!! (August 2)
We welcomed Jeff and Brittany to Alaska with a flightseeing tour from Talkeetna to Denali (Mt. McKinley) We got great weather for a flight to Denali, and we even got our glacier landing in! It was truly Awesome! We got to see Denali's Peak over the top of the clouds, landed on Pika Glacier, and had awesome views of all other other Glaciers. It was truly an amazing experience!!!
North Pole Alaska!!! (July 28)
On the way back from the Arctic, we stopped in to check out North Pole Alaska, where it was a hot summer day! North Pole Alaska is actually just a little south of Fairbanks and is centered around the Santa Claus House. They also have a "north pole" that is a matching partner to one dropped from a plane at the geographic north pole in the '50's.
Dalton Highway Southbound! (July 27)
We had much clearer weather on the north slope during our drive back south, and we got luckier with wildlife! A whole heard of Musk Oxen crossed the road in front of us, we saw a marmot bigger than Batman, and got wonderful views of the North Slope and brooks range from the north. We wound up at an awesome campsite between the Arctic Circle and the Yukon River where we stretched out and decompressed after a very long two days spent almost entirely in the car!
Dalton Highway Northbound!!! (July 26)
Our journey to the top of the world! We set out on a trip from Chena Hot Springs to the Arctic Circle, but when we got there, decided to go for the gold! Add adventure vehicle to the list of unlikely uses for the Fit! We covered 414 miles to Dead Horse Alaska on one of the roughest roads in America. We drove across the Yukon river on the only bridge that crosses it in Alaska, saw finger mountain, grilled and ate shrimp at the Arctic Circle, crossed the Atigun Pass, saw a caribou and tons of birds on the north slope, napped by pump station number two, and finally made it to the end of the road!
Angel Rocks Trail! (July 25)
We took advantage of a beautiful day to hike and climbed the Angel Rocks Trail beside Chena Hot Springs. It was epic, but a tough steep climb. We had a lot of motivation to go up, up, up though, as the mosquitoes beside the river were pretty thick. Towards the top we could enjoy ourselves at least, since we were too high up for the swarms. Unfortunately, the way back down followed a slough, so we were being eaten alive for the last hour of the hike. Overall it was well worth the bights, (and falls and sore muscles), especially since they were quickly healed by the hot springs that night. I am now a firm believer in the "healing waters" of natural hot springs.
Chena Hot Springs!!! (July 24-26)
Another one of our favorite spots in Alaska, this awesome little resort is northeast of Fairbanks. Home of natural hot springs are nice and warm for swimming year round, and also used to power the whole resort! The place was so awesome! We can't wait to go back in winter to stay and swim in the snow!
Russian River Campground and Falls! (July 18-20)
A fantastic campground on the Kenai Peninsula, at the confluence of the Kenai River and the Russian River. We got a great spot with excellent views! Batman got to chase some squirrels (the first we had seen in Alaska)! Although it is bear country, we went indecent free for the two nights we were there. We hiked to Russian River Falls, where we got to see some salmon jumping up the falls! We took the long way back along the river, hoping to spot a bear (on the other bank), but no such luck! After a full day of hiking, we settled back in for some rest, relaxation, and a crab leg dinner!
Byron Glacier!!! (July 14)
Well, we could have died, but we didn't!!! After the 0.75 mile paved path, we set off on one of our most foolhardy adventures of our lives! In blue jeans and tennis shoes, we hiked and climed over a mile of snow field and ice sheets to make it to the big blue glacier ice! As Pam got up close and personal with some of the blue ice and an Ice cave, the huge towers of ice (pictured above her touching the glacier) started crashing down with earth shaking rumbles (about 150 yards away). Had we chosen to go up there, or had the fall happened closer to us we would have been squashed like bugs! But obviously we didn't, so it was all worth it!!! The long trip back down was a bit easier as we slid down the steeper parts!
Homer!!! (July 9-11)
Homer is definitely one of our favorite spots in all of Alaska! We loved camping on the beach, tidepooling, views of Kachemak Bay State Park and it's glaciers, and all the restaurants and shops on the Homer Spit. It is such a cool place!
Alaskan 4th of July!
We went up to Eagle River on the 3rd of July to celebrate the 4th at midnight. It is the first 4th we have ever celebrated where we needed thick jackets! We celebrated with good food, beer, stuffed bananas, and Fireworks!!! It was just barely dark enough at midnight, but the show was still excellent!
Portage Glacier!!! (June 26)
Portage Glacier is on a fresh water lake it carved out in Portage Valley. Just a short drive from Anchorage, it was a great introduction to Alaska's glaciers! Portage Valley is part of the Chugach National Forest, and is lined with so many hanging glacier's that it is home to the "trail of blue ice." The lake is full of Icebergs that break right of the glacier (Our first Icebergs!!!) We were also very impressed with all of the waterfalls flowing into the lake from all the melting snow around the valley. When we got to the glacier, we got to see a few smaller chunks of Ice fall of, the crew scooped up a fresh little iceberg for us to taste. Overall it was great day trip.
Flattop Mountain! (June 20/21)
Kicking off our Alaskan summer in style, we climbed Flattop and camped on top. We had a lot to celebrate: the first day of summer, the solstice, and a birthday! We both struggled to reach the top; but not batman, he made it look easy!!! The views were worth it with beautiful views of anchorage and the countryside! The last picture is about at dark as it got all night!
The mighty road warrior! As far as unlikely vehicles to be used as moving vans go, the fit might be near the top! Sorry we never took a good pic of just how packed it was, but we would say she carried a few hundred pounds of vacuum packed closes, linens, kitchen essentials, entertainment essentials, and random stuff we couldn't leave behind. We went well over the original Google map estimate of 6999 for a grand total of almost 7640. We also came in at just over 34 miles per gallon average for the trip. This was a truly extreme trip, and we managed to make it with only one casualty - a bent wheel and lost hub cap that had to be replaced in Canada (the reason for our late start our of Whitehorse.) Hard to believe we covered so much ground with out any tire or body damage!
We made it!!! We made the call to push straight through from Whitehorse to Anchorage after confirming that our apartment would be left unlocked for us :) It was a long drive after a late start (replacing a wheel in Whitehorse), but we made it to Anchorage around midnight. On the road we saw some awesome glaciers, had a close encounter with a moose and a porcupine (missed the chance for pics of them though), and saw a sunset that lasted about an hour! The last pic is from our balcony after midnight, and that is just about as dark as it got all night!
