salem smiled as her friend jumped around. “okay, okay, if you’re sure. if you trust him so much, i have no choice but to do so, as well.” she laughed softly. “what’s the boy’s name? i don’t think you’ve said.”

“good!” pandora definitely wanted archer to get along with her friends, especially since they could be somewhat protective at times. “oh, it’s archer! archer rho!”

“pandora.” he handed out another cupcake with big smile on his face. “what do you think of when you get to meet new people?” castor nodded. “well, thank you  but…” he stood there. “i am just curious.”

“well... i’m happy! i always like meeting new people. and i always want to be as friendly as possible and get to know them,” pandora said, humming to herself. “just curious? about what?”

salem listened as pandora rambled, and she couldn’t help but smile at her friend’s excitement. “well, that is quite a story you’ve got there, isn’t it?” she laughed softly. “but — i’m happy for you, dora. still, though, if this boy is ever mean to you, you let me know, alright?” she shot her friend a look. “he better not break your heart.”

pandora nodded vigorously, excited that salem was happy for her. she knew she wouldn’t get the other girl jumping up and down and squealing like she was, but she was happy regardless. “thank you, thank you!” she said. “but he won’t hurt me, salem! he’s really sweet and nice and considerate! he’d never do that to me!”

castor took a good look at a cupcake and thought of all the times they could have been able to make something this amazing. “you are welcome.” he made a face. “though, is it? pandora, nevermind, it’s nice to meet you too.”

pandora blinked at his question, though she wasn’t sure if it was directed to her or himself. she answered anyway. “of course it is! i wouldn’t say ‘nice to meet you’ if i didn’t mean it!” not entirely true, since she said it every time she met someone, but at the same time, she loved meeting new people.

“oh, yes. of course!” castor handed out a few more. he touched his cheeks and wiped at them with his free hand. “you and your mama sound like the perfect team to bring smiles and joy.” the boy held the container with one hand and held out another towards her. “name’s castor. castor yong. and you are?””

this time, she made sure to keep her sadness concerning her mother inside. she was the one to mention her first, after all. it was her own fault she was feeling so badly. “thank you, thank you!” she said with a giggle. “i’m pandora hwang! nice to meet you!”

Once she answered he almost couldn’t believe it, but soon after he began to grin uncontrollably. “You would? Oh I’m so glad!” he replied. Slowly he reached up and gently cupped her cheek in his hand, “Miss pandora, I believe there is something I still owe you from the dance.” he replied, there was almost a glimmer in his eyes as he looked down at her. 

pandora bounced up and down on her toes until he cupped her cheek, becoming still, waiting in anticipation. still, she asked, “and what would that be?” with a cheeky smile, as though she didn’t already know. some of her memories were hazy from that night, but there was one memory that stood out above all the others.

“yeah, nobody should be upset on their…birthdays.” he smiled. “and just a simple thing can change a lot.” castor nodded and grabbed a cupcake, holding it out to them.. “oh, yeah, here you go! enjoy!” they said a quick thank you and went on with their day.

“exactly! my mama always told me to make the best out of a bad situation, so that’s what i did.” her mother had been an optimistic woman, and so she had taught her daughter to be the same. she passed out a few more cupcakes, a smile on her face.

salem laughed, watching her friend as she jumped. “yep, yep. what about ‘em?” she questioned, looking up from her crystals.

“well, i was giving them to this boy anonymously and he didn’t know it was me, but i took a chance and asked him to the dance anyway, and he said yes! and we were talking about his secret admirer and he was saying that he would have to tell them that he likes someone else, and at first i was really nervous ‘cause i thought he was gonna reject me, but he didn’t! he said he liked me! and then i told him i was his secret admirer and he was really happy -- and then the whole ursula thing happened, let’s forget about that -- and then he asked me to be his girlfriend, so now we’re dating!” pandora had to stop and catch her breath once she was done.

he shrugged, following behind her. “how many times have you done this before?” castor looked at the cupcakes. “i…” he went up to the first person he saw. “hi there, would you like a delicious cupcake?” and just like that opened it up. 

“a few. i used to do it on the isle sometimes, too. at school. if i knew it was someone’s birthday, i used to give them something sweet to brighten their day. everyone over there needs it, y’know?” she had always been an optimistic sort of girl, but on the isle, she was a rare breed.

“you can count on me. and to bring smiles on people’s faces.” he thought of father and tried to continue being excited. castor grabbed the container.  “it’s wonderful, isn’t it?” 

pandora quickly ( but delicately ) managed to pack the rest of the cupcakes and grinned with satisfaction once she was done. “there we go! now let’s go pass these out.” she headed towards the door, a spring in her step.

he had a serious look on his face for a little bit. castor had heard those words before. it felt wrong but he decided to put it to the side and smiled .  “oh yeah! of course! it’s going to be awesome! this is already so exciting and we haven’t even started yet.”.”

pandora was glad that he didn’t question her any further. she finished icing the very last cupcake before sliding over a container that was already full of the finished product. “there, you can have that batch! i just need to pack these ones away and we’ll be good to go!”

he looked up to see her and shook his head. “hold up, are you okay?” castor asked. “and if you are planning to give them away, i could help. i’d love to help with it.”

“i’m fine, i’m fine!” she said, dismissing the question. it was a lie, and she didn’t like to lie ( not to mention that she was horrible at it ), but she also didn’t like worrying people. “could you? that would be amazing! i was just going to hand them out on campus.”

“six or seven years old?” castor was trying to successfully scare people by then. “wow. you and your mama are very talented and this.” he ate the piece in his hand. “needs to be shared with the world.”

“mhm! i always found baking fun.” thinking about her mother made her smile fade, become sadder in tone. it had been far too long since she’d seen her mother. “well, i guess i could share mine. if people want them.”

he picked up a tiny piece and started to eat it. castor immediately jumped in circles, ready to eat another and another. “wowie!! that was delicious. and your welcome.” he picked up another one. “is it alright if i ask both of those questions?”

the compliment made her smile, and she clapped her hands once before replying. “well, i started baking this batch about two hours ago! and i started baking in general when i was, um... six or seven? my mama taught me!”

“dear god, they look gorgeous.” castor squealed. he had seen them before and may have tasted too much. “okay. don’t mind if i do.” he grabbed one and carefully took about six tiny pieces off it, “i should have noticed the smell, whoops. and how long have you been making them for… like when did you start? 

“thank you!” pandora was always proud of her baked goods, so having them complimented always made her day. she paused, waiting for his reaction to their taste. “it’s fine! and, um... do you mean when did i start baking this batch? or when i started baking in general?”
