audiences have no idea how to be uncomfortable anymore
watch movies that make you uncomfortable read books that make you uncomfortable go to plays that make you uncomfortable watch tv that makes you uncomfortable look at paintings and sculpture and artwork that makes you uncomfortable. it is spiritually and morally and ethically and artistically really really good for you. think about why you are uncomfortable. what biases do you bring to art? what biases does the art bring to you? how do you reconcile this? how does your worldview grow and expand and change? all this and more will be answered and available to you if you just engage with art that does not coddle you and treats you like an intelligent human being that can sit through discomfort
notes on this post seem to allege there are two experiences of art: pure escapism that doesn't challenge you because "life is stressful enough already" and like, deliberately watching liveleak decapitation gore videos.
this illustrates a core problem: many people don't even know what 'discomfort' actually is. discomfort can be looking at an abstract painting and trying to determine what the point is. discomfort can be reading a book or article about someone else's understanding of the world which may differ to your own. discomfort can be watching a fashion show and thinking about why a model is wearing something bizarre. discomfort can be putting yourself in someone else's shoes and trying to see the world as they do for a moment, even if you don't agree.
ultimately, discomfort involves being willing to leave a 'safe' bubble and grow in maturity as a person. this is perhaps specifically challenging for a fandom-oriented website where fan culture/fiction cling to the certainty of known characters, archetypes, settings, and references to escape an uncertain world. this comfort is fine sometimes, of course, but you will eventually need to leave that bubble if you want to grow!
BEHOLD YURI’S STRONGEST WARRIOR
a tragedy in 3 acts
Been looking at lego babies for reasons and holy shit guys look at this thing
Mizuki and Rui’s respective relationships to their marginalization are very interesting, the similarities and differences between them.
Mizuki’s capable of understanding herself as a victim, an oscillation between ressentiment and defeatism, a conflict of World v. Mizuki, she’s not good at believing there isn’t anything wrong with her, but other people having a problem with her, refusing to understand her, is their fault too. Rui’s clinging onto thought terminating cliches insulating him from ever having to put any blame on someone else, it’s just true that whatever he is must beget how he’s treated.
Rui tolerates an absurd degree of intolerance directed at him, Mizuki also tolerates way more intolerance than anyone should have to, but she’s at least capable of thinking “that’s fucked up” when someone does something fucked up to her. Mizuki understands herself as occupying a position where she will be hurt, people do and want to take actions that will directly result in her being hurt, regardless of whether or not the intent is to hurt her in every situation, it’s cruelty she’s on the other end of. Rui’s on that “it is what it is” cope like his life is on the line, to never have to think of himself as someone who is even capable of being harmed, to not think of others as people who willfully harm him. It’s just the way of things.
We must not blame either the alchemist for being fundamentally wretched nor the townsfolk for refusing to extend him humanity by understanding him, they’re simply different. Whereas Mizuki can think “Why me?” and “I don't want people to just get used to me, but to try to understand me. Is that too much to ask?” and the like. For as much as Mizuki is also prone to justify the intolerance of her, she can’t help her resentment and exhaustion in the face of her existence being denied. For Rui, it’s just easier to believe that he is what he’s made out to be. There’s no point in resenting it, it wouldn’t change anything. This is all there is, all he can ever expect. For Mizuki, she knows this is all there is, all she can ever expect, she knows there’s no point in complaining, but she hates it, no matter how many times she tries to squash the feeling. Rui resents it too, but his feelings are a black box in general, and he’s very good at never acknowledging it.
Mizuki operates in constant conflict, Rui operates in total detachment, but I think the feeling is the same, or at least very similar. Being met with ostracization, getting hurt, resenting that, but accepting it as all you can expect. Mizuki oscillates between hating herself and hating others for hating her, before giving up feeling anything at all, cause it’s so exhausting, cyclical. Rui regards his feelings about his position as irrelevant, because nothing he feels would change what simply is, a refusal to acknowledge anything but a defeatist (idealist) pragmatism, stable.
everything has to be on an app including very important money based things and also critical is that that app works as poorly as possible
Your middle aged Aunts lead the first online charge for yaoi and your great Aunts lead the first conventions for fandoms and wrote yaoi fanfiction on paper. (It just wasn’t called that at the time)
Sometimes they didn’t even show anyone. Sometimes they showed a few fellow fans.

On a related note, passed my way by a friend:
not an apologizer but a contextualizer. yes the character did that but please understand the Circumstance. yes they had other options but they had to make this choice in a sea of available bad choices. and also it made the narrative more interesting. won't anybody think about the narrative!!!!!
I started playing Project Sekai because a friend is obsessed with it, and now I fell into the same rabbit hole lmao, JUST IN TIME FOR ENA5 OMGGGG(I think It's pretty clear who my favorite is lol), so yeah, forgive me for no Tokomaru for a while, this dreadful polycule is now the ones living in my brain
