andrea’s life had always been m e s s y as far back as she can remember, in one way or another ; dirty pots and pans piling up in the rusting sinks, boxes of spilled cheerios in hurried mornings, complicated familial relationships with tear-soaked screaming matches & run-down crack houses that had come to feel home. nothing really came easily to the young addict --- her life had just always been like this ; a constant uphill battle.
loving that little ball of sunshine toddling in through her room to greet her, however? that was the easiest thing she’d ever done. andrea’s little boy was the absolute light of her life, the best kind of reminder that there were always good things to come to those who waited.
“ hi, baby! ” she squeals, throwing her arms around him.
“ how was school today? ” she asks, squeezing his small frame to hers and showering him with affection. she cradles his head in her hands, lightly pinching his cheeks; he’s so beautiful with his bright, hopeful eyes and dimpled smile --- and he’s gotten so big! the days of enduring the relentless bullying in her last few years of public school pregnant and failing senior year feel like lifetimes ago ---
--- and yet somehow it still feels like only y e s t e r d a y the doctors placed her fussing newborn baby into her exhausted arms as she wept in joy alongside Grandma.
“ it was good, ” he smiles politely, if a little sheepish and shy.
“ I got an A+ on my social studies test today... ”
“ an A+ ! that’s so good, brock! ”
slow down, mijo, she begs him internally.
you’re not ready to grow up in this world yet!
“ we have to celebrate tonight! whatever you want. ”
“ . . . can jesse come over? ” brock asks timidly, looking away as if afraid to hear the answer. andrea runs her fingers through his hair lovingly. he’d taken such a liking to jesse. she was nervous, not afraid for her own heart being broken, but for her son’s. it was still too early to tell if jesse would be the one to truly be around for him for not, and she didn’t want him to get his hopes up too high. she kisses his forehead.
“ I don’t know baby, ” she says, knowing whatever business jess had kept him away more often than not. she smiles s w e e t l y, sadly. jesse was absolutely amazing with brock, but she was still worried ; for both him and her boy.
“ --- but I can try to call him and we can ask him together, okay? ”
the brilliant smile that spreads on brock’s face is more than enough to light up a hundred early new mexico sunrises.
