I know the show is very different than the comics almost to the point of being its own thing, it doesn’t follow the same storyline and the characterizations/arcs are different, focused on different aspects that make the characters feel different, but I still mourn not having Chris and instead getting Russ. I think it might just be a smaller aspect of a bigger problem I have with the show, and don’t get me wrong, I love the show and wish they had more time to develop and grow, and that may have even fixed some of these issues, but I feel like an important part of the comics was the girls coming to the realization that just because they didn’t succeed in conventional terms of success doesn’t mean they don’t have good lives. The show on the other hand doesn’t seem to have that same message.
Future Tiffany is a dropout, but this time of business school. She doesn’t drop out because she flunked due to finding out she was adopted, she drops out because she didn’t like business school, which Tiffany can understand as even now she doesn’t like business and can’t fathom why she would choose that, which is the basis of her sympathy.
Tiffany met Chris there and they both dropped out and she eloped with Chris, a goth guy. At first Tiffany is confused ‘You’re my- I mean Tiffany’s husband?’ And he picks up on her judging him, to which he responds that Tiffany and him don’t care if people judge them for how they dress. When Tiff starts turning her judgement from him to older her, that is when he starts to have a problem with it, questioning who she is. She’s like ‘I can’t believe my husband wouldn’t recognize me’ (like girl I don’t think it’s even that you just don’t look like tiff anymore, could be that even if you did, most people’s first thought wouldn’t be ‘this twelve year old who looks like my wife twelve years ago before I met her probably is her who time traveled here’), but she shows him photos and he almost immediately believes her and his first thought is that he has to go out and save his wife. Then the other kids show up and he still has that protective mentality, now it’s ‘I have to protect the children’. (I could go into a whole other post about how the comics subvert the expectations we have based on the archetypes and stereotypes we have about characters in this comic.)
We cut to older Tiffany and the first thing they show us is even though she dropped out and looks unconventional, that doesn’t mean she is not smart. She and Chris have a seemingly good relationship and even though she doesn’t seem to have a job or be anything like what Tiffany and the other girls thought she would be like, she still is smart and brave, she is still happy and although not being what Tiffany had in mind, she can have a happy relationship with Chris without having to ‘dumb herself down’ and she doesn’t just have the ‘dumb expendable boyfriend to the smart capable girl that just serves to drag her down’. It feels like they are both intelligent and supportive in a way no one else was to them, they feel like partners and equals, which shows Tiffany just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Younger Show Tiffany rejects older her’s attempt at spinning her life as a good thing for her by just shaming her for being a lowlife who isn’t trying. She frames the idea that she wouldn’t strive for conventional success as her being a coward and lazy. She says she will do everything in her power to still try to achieve conventional success against what her future has laid out for her. Show Tiffany is unhappy with how her life turned out and clearly shows a lot of regret, for dropping out, for dating Russ, and it climaxes with her about to get her memory wiped and screaming out how she doesn’t want to go back to her unhappy life, and the solution is that Tiffany makes sure she can think she invented time travel.
