I Won't Forget
"I'm easily forgotten as it is. I'd rather they forget me, I'm used to it." The words fell like snowflakes from the lilac pegasus' lips, but to Sketchy, they felt more like bombs; every enunciation crashing tragically into their heart. The response had been prompted by a silly game, just random questions that normally resulted in giggles and snickers at the outrageous things they would say. But for some reason, Sketchy had asked the stupid question out of the blue, and now it had made Neon upset. It was more than clear by the way she clutched at the pillow with her forelegs, and the way she bowed her head to hide her glistening eyes. In a quieter, more unfeeling part of their mind, Sketchy mused that Neon looked something like a willow in the moment, gracefully bowing its branches in a heartbreaking display. However, they were brought back to the present by the ache of their own heart shattering at their friend's sorrowful state. Sketchy moved to sit directly beside Neon, their flanks pressing together. Neon shied away for a moment, hesitant of the contact, but eventually relaxed into the comforting warmth. Sketchy draped two of their wings over her and pulled her closer still, resting their chin carefully on top of her head. They smiled softly, remembering when Neon had done the same for them, not so long ago. Just as she did, Sketchy began to sing, but in a strange, foreign tongue that Neon couldn't identify. They wove a song of the endless skies and infinite oceans, of the tender whisper of a warm breeze and the cool feeling of rain on skin. They didn't care if the meaning was lost in the language gap, and just kept singing in their deep melodious voice. The intended effect was clear as day when Neon began to relax her hold on the pillow and rested her head against Sketchy's neck. They kept singing for a while longer, the haunting notes trailing off into comfortable silence as the two simply took in each other's company. After a few moments of this, Sketchy moved to face Neon, holding a hoof under her chin to look her in the eyes. They spoke softly, pulling their words directly from the heart. "Neon, you are anything but forgettable. You silly, lovely thing, how could you assume such blasphemy? You are incredibly dear to me, and to so many others. I absolutely refuse to let go of the memory of one of my closest friends. I care too much about you to forget." Sketchy pressed a gentle kiss to Neon's forehead and closed their eyes, hoping that she understood. @ourbutterflygarden
