Hello!! I have a question, If I have heritage leading to ancient cultures but cannot trace it back exactly because of the race erasure in my culture and if they are "dead" religions (which they are) is it cultural appropriation to follow them?

You’d have to be a lot more specific because this differs from culture to culture. having ancestry or heritage doesn’t make you apart of that culture. But again, this only applies to certain groups, and if you name which one you’re talking about, the chances of me connecting you to someone apart of that culture, who can give you a better opinion, is higher!

I definitely am not coming at your neck anon because a lot of us just aren’t aware about these things, but yes, it’s appropriation, Mayan and Aztec people/religion isn’t dead, their communities, religion and culture still exist and are very marginalized but still very much alive. 

Making it seem like they’re from the past harms by playing into the “ancient peoples” stereotype when they very much exist harms their community tremendously, erasing them when they are disproportionately affected by State-sactioned violence that still happen to this day and lack of opportunities hurts their community. They’re still here, we need to get rid of this narrative that Aztec and Mayan religions people and culture are dead ergo you can take from them because you’re contributing to their erasure and appropriation. I’m not indigenous but many Latin American&Caribbean indigenous folks of various tribes/groups have spoken up on the topic of mestizaje, cultural appropriation, exotification, mestizo & white latino privilege and the state saction appropriation and commercialization of indigenous religion and cultures and attempts of assimilation of indigenous culture by mestizos/white latinos/the government and how it harms their communities, we should do our best to listen to these groups and uplift their voices. The “Maya/Aztec people are a dead people” idea needs to be nipped!

 Again I’m not indigenous myself but I can only imagine how frustrating it is to see people constantly say the group you belong to are dead people and no longer exist ergo mestizo/white latine/non-indigenous people can take from their cultures whether for spiritual reasons or commercialization. Many have said it’s appropriation. LOTS of Aztec/Mayan/Indigenous people from other groups in Latino America/the Caribbean have spoken about this so I’mma drop direct links with screenshots to articles of Aztec/Mayan/Indigenous folks of different groups speaking up! I definitely also suggest you look into mestizaje, think about doing research into whether or not you can reconnect with groups, and in general you should look for other Latino folks who are indigenous and belong to these groups to consult and talk to about this. If you want to connect to your ancestors, ancestor work is open to anybody. But exactly like witches-of-color said and from what other Indigenous latinos and scholars have been saying online, regardless if you have the ancestry if you’re not connected to a community/tribal group you are an outsider and you cannot just take what you want from them.
