also re: teens sitting around with their tablets and smartphones

like, if a kid can access the internet (with some privacy still) while also sitting in the same room as their parents, honestly that’s better and more social than what I did as a teenager, which was hole up in my room at my desktop computer that I couldn’t move anywhere else in the house

mostly what I see from the teens in my family is they will sit and scroll through their phone, but if something interesting starts happening, or a new person enters the room, or they see something cool they want to share, they look up and interact again, because they’re sitting right there with everyone else.

that is waaaay more social than 2002 me, hunched over my desktop for hours and only seeing my mom in passing when I went to microwave a burrito at 1am. way, way more social.

My whole family does this now. We’re all in the same room, but each on a phone, tablet, or laptop. Certain poop heads will shake their heads at how technology is dividing us.

They’d each be reading, or sewing, or writing letters or some shit, and mostly sat quietly near each other but not bothering each other.

According to Tony Stark in the new Civil War trailer, he and Steve Rogers used to be friends. Really?

Cap and Iron Man have an antagonistic relationship in both Avengers movies, frequently getting on each others’ nerves. They fight against common enemies, but there’s very little evidence of them enjoying each other’s company. Tony seems to find Steve uptight and moralistic, while Steve thinks Tony is reckless and rude.

So when Tony protested in the Civil War trailer that he was Steve’s friend, a number of explanations spring to mind. The most interesting possibility is that Tony simply doesn’t understand how friendship works.

Tony Stark has one of the most consistent and complex character arcs in the MCU, spread over the Iron Man trilogy and both Avengers films. He’s a socially isolated genius with serious PTSD and father issues, and has only had three friends for most of his adult life: Rhodey, Pepper Potts, and JARVIS. Each of these characters act as his caretaker at one time or another, reining him in and attempting to ameliorate his self-destructive tendencies.

Then in The Avengers, we see him designing apartments for the other Avengers just days after they first meet. In his keenness to join a team of heroes he can trust and respect, Tony elevates the other Avengers to BFF status before those friendships have a chance to develop onscreen. He’s so unfamiliar with functional human relationships that Steve’s “betrayal” in Civil War may partly take place inside Tony’s head, an echo of the very real betrayal by his mentor Obadiah Stane in Iron Man.
