This represents to me the relationship between your rising sign&house and your sun sign&house. When you are so caught up in this idea of yourself, you feel the need to fuel it with what you think is already there (ego) and can be upset when those ideas are challenged (I will add that ego is important for a strong sense of self, it simply needs balance, know when to ebb and when to flow).
Rising on the other hand is always there. Sun and Rising are not opposites, but they must work in conjunction. Some pairings are harder than others because of the philosophies of each (this is my mercury 9H talking, lolz). Rising is who you are, even when you don't see it or recognize it. It is like the perfume/cologne (or pheromones) or smell of the clothes you wear that you stop smelling, but it remains as a recognizing factor to all whose paths you've crossed.
