okay well tbh it's nothing really seriously egregious about his character writing that makes me personally hate him- veilguard to be quite honest is too scared of any potentially interesting character traits to make him anything other than a palatable piece of buttered toast. it's the fact that his very existence in the fandom has managed to perfectly represent the very worst of the racism (how his fans tend to treat davrin + neve), misogyny (again how his fans treat neve but also him consistently getting more votes on character polls than all the objectively better written women in the series) and also like....he's like the poster child for encapsulating how defanged veilguard IS as a game. he's the heir to the crows but he's #niceys and he's an assassin in a cool romantasy-still-a-good-person-way and not what the crows originally were - bad people in a bad situation doing fucked up things. he's possessed by a spirit but unlike the previous times in the series where this has happened there's not really anything to SAY about it. spite acts more like a misbehaving child who we get to roll our eyes at fondly and teach to be a Good Person, and he's a distinctly seperate entity to lucanis so there's not even really any fun identity stuff going on there. he's just bland. painfully so. and the fact HIS popularity skyrocketed at the expense of davrin and neve's is something i'll never be able to look past sorry
