Meet the Agami Heron (Agamia agami)! You can find this bird in wetland habitats in parts of Central and South America, specifically around the Amazon and Orinoco rivers—if you can spot it, that is. One might think that this bird’s ornate plumage would make it easy to find, but it’s known to keep super still for extended periods of time, making it difficult to discern. It often stands motionless in or along shallow water, waiting for prey, like fish, to come near. Then its long, powerful neck darts out to strike. It took Barbara Ketcham Wheaton more than 50 years to compile The Sifter.
IN THE EARLY 1960S, JULIA Child and her husband handed Barbara Ketcham Wheaton the keys to their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The famous couple was going to California for the summer, but they wanted their young neighbor to be able to continue one of her favorite activities: perusing Child’s collection of historical cookbooks.
Now an honorary curator of Harvard University’s Schlesinger Library Culinary Collection, Wheaton was then in her early 30s, with young children at home. She had left an art history PhD program a few years before to marry historian Bob Wheaton, but she still had a passion for the past. When she discovered her love of cooking, and her neighbor’s trove of unique books, Wheaton wondered: What if she turned the same methodology she had learned in art-history classes to a more humble text—the cookbook?
….
Now, the public can enjoy the fruits of Wheaton’s 50 years of labor. In July 2020, Wheaton and a team of scholars, including two of her children, Joe Wheaton and Catherine Wheaton Saines, launched The Sifter. Part Wikipedia-style crowd-sourced database and part meticulous bibliography, The Sifter is a catalogue of more than a thousand years of European and U.S. cookbooks, from the medieval Latin De Re Culinaria, published in 800, to The Romance of Candy, a 1938 treatise on British sweets.

Cudjo Lewis, the last surviving captive of the last slave ship to bring Africans to the U.S.

It’s so significant too that this narrative was collected by Zora Neale Hurston, one of the greatest authors and anthropologists of her time. She was shunned by the “gatekeepers” of both of these professions, largely because of her Blackness, her womanhood, and her uncompromising commitment to honoring and showcasing both in her works. She died penniless and alone in a state-run institution in 1960. All of her works had gone out of publication by then. It took more than a decade before she was rediscovered. A young author by the name of Alice Walker had come across her work and was deeply inspired by it. “In 1973, after an exhaustive search, Walker came across Hurston’s unmarked grave in Ft. Pierce, Fla. She purchased a headstone for Hurston’s tomb and had it inscribed “A Genius of the South.“”
It is through Zora Neale Hurston’s pioneering sacrifice, and the acceptance of that inheritance by Alice Walker that we have found this missing piece of our history. Without the courageous and unfailing work of Black women, we wouldn’t have Cudjo Lewis’s story. We are slowly regaining a narrative that’s been hidden from us, one that continues to be lied about. Trust Black women to lead the way.

Rainforest Night Fall
The sun sets, casting shadows on the forest floor as a chorus of gounouge and crickets fills the pungent air The occasional breeze rustle through the leaves of hundred foot giant bamboo and century palm trees insects of every size, colour arise from a day's sleep While ground doves settle down for the night, Mindful of malfini keeping perch on the highest branch and the shiny eye of manicou lurking among heliconias packing away their brightness for the next morning sun while delicate, fragrant midnight flowers take up the baton for a brief stint The sounds of humans and their things, a barking dog, music, a water pump, the grating of a clutch? Struggle to displace a symphony that dares to be And then the rains came Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh And once again I contemplate 14 June 2016
