Kaedon Knight is in a rock musical about Benjamin Franklin.

(That's James VI & Goodfellow c.2025 and Sable Siskins & Duke Typhoon c.2024, for those who aren't living encyclopedias of this stuff.)

It's called The Sound of America and runs through the first of August (in Philly, obviously, because where else). I have been putting off posting about it because videowork keeps getting in the way of writing up a proper post (sorry). What follows is gleaned from the show's website and Instagram, the latter of which is whence hail all the images.

The Sound of America, directed by Kyle Metzger, reimagines Ben Franklin as “a struggling musician and inventor who forms a scrappy band with his Leather Apron Club friends in Philadelphia. When he accidentally unlocks the power of electric rock n’ roll after a lightning strike, everything changes.” Book and lyrics by Randall Lane; music by Todd Schwartz and Warren J. Braverman (song-count of twenty-three). Given the phrasing of the credit to the former, I believe there is dialogue and it isn't sung-through.

The musicians are onstage rather than the pit, and the actors likewise play instruments. The folk behind the media coverage I've come across seem to lose their minds a little bit about that latter fact, and it's been emphasized a bit as a Thing™ – which is, of course, highly amusing to me, as my theatrical experiences have skewed heavily toward the likes of Ren Faires for near a decade: such things do not register as abnormal to me.

Kaedon portrays Lord Alexander Wedderburn, a chap who irl took SEVERE exception to Ben Franklin. If the attached screenshot of a photo from the show's Instagram is to be believed, Kaedon also plays the friggin' autoharp in this show, a revelation which is doing something to my psyche that I'm uncertain how to articulate.

(But Kaedon also plays the guitar in it, as we've seen them do before.)

There are four other actors: Kohl Pilgrim as Benjamin Franklin; Federica Andino-Vega as Deborah Read; Jameson May as Hugh Meredith; Gerson Malave as William T. Franklin (who was until quite recently listed on the website simply as WTF).

There's also a remote cameo by Sir Roger Daltrey of The Who as the Royal Governor, which is undoubtedly an objectively cool thing of great excitement to folk who know more about rock than I do.

Dunno what the plan is for the show after the run is over, whether or not there's possibility for it to go elsewhere. But it's certainly a cool concept, and undoubtedly worth looking into even without factoring in the PARF actor.

The venue – FringeArts – seems to dance on the VERY fine edge between "does cool theatre things" and "is pretentious"; but of course, those aren't always mutually exclusive. Likewise, the best way I can describe the energy I get from some of the stuff on the show's website and Instagram is that the writers and at least some of the producers only recently found of that nontraditional theatre was a thing, or that experimental theatre was a thing, or that nonstandard theatre was a thing, and haven't realized that anyone else already knew that. Not necessarily in the sense of "oh, we're doing something completely unheard of and new", but more in the sense of assuming that audiences will have only experienced straightforward or traditional theatre. Like an almost defensive over-explaining about what they're going for: which I, PARF "other things to note" Fan, really don't have any room to talk about. (Disclaimer that this is merely the energy I personally get from the website and Instagram, and doesn't indicate an actual thing about the the production or anyone involved.)

I've been uploading videos again, btw

It finally occurred to me that since I simply update the pinned post instead of making a new post for each video, probably nobody on here noticed that I've resumed uploading.

As of making this post, I'm up to video 46 of 176.

I'm still not gonna make a whole post on here for each video (too much clutter and also tagging = too time-consuming), but I'll make one whenever I finish uploading all the videos from a given day.

For folk who keep less of a mental encyclopedia of Faire actors than I, this is at minimum the soul behind Lady Evelyn Gillian Thornbridge (c.2026), Contessa Faustina Nardone (c.2024), Norah Dasher Deere (c.2023), Astra Cripslocke (c.2023), Minerva Hopgrove (c.2022), and sundry Theatre in the Mansion characters, Robin Fertitta. Everybody made it out safely, but they now have to start over from complete scratch. To quote the description, this GoFundMe is intended to “...cover the first month of rent in their new apartment, which still needs to be found, as well as any hidden costs that might come with starting over completely (i.e. Application fees, renters insurance, new clothing, new tools, etc.)”. This is an unimaginably awful situation to be in, but we can make it significantly less terrible if we work together on it now.

Hey so fun fact: five-year-old James at minimum witnessed his actively-wounded and dying grandfather carried past him; possibly even witnessed him dying. So, y'know, that's a fantastic thing for a literal child to go through.

(What's worse is that this was James' “...last close relative in Scotland with whom he was in regular contact”. Matthew Stuart, 4th earl of Lennox, if anyone's wondering, plus James' second regent, who by all accounts cared immensely for his grandson.)
