For Dorcas there was no other way to celebrate returning for her last year at Hogwarts than by having a pint…or five….or seven. Actually, she’d just had a lot of firewhiskey out by the Quidditch pitch with a few friends. It was sometime around midnight where she came bustling down the corridor, too drunk to care if she got into trouble and singing at the top of her lungs.

“Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me. We pillage plunder, we rifle and loot. Drink up me ‘earties, yo ho. We kidnap and ravage and don’t give a hoot. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho!”

She sang, before turning the corridor and bumping so hard into someone she fell onto the floor with them. Laughing, she dropped her flask and continued to sing.

“We’re devils and black sheep, we’re really bad eggs!”

Parthenia had been on her way to the party being thrown in the Room of Requirement when she’d almost ran into a professor patrolling the halls. It was almost like they were expecting a party. Of course they’d been expecting it. The marauders had thrown something every year since fifth grade. She had evaded the professor and turned down another hallway only to run into someone and send them flying. “Shit.” She breathed when she saw a very drunk Dorcas Meadowes at her feet.

Looking around, she heard footsteps coming closer. “Shit shit shit.” She hissed and dragged the girl into the nearest classroom and behind the teacher’s desk. She placed a hand over Cas’ mouth and waiting for the footsteps to pass.

Oh, Merlin. Okay, I gotta go. I uhm, will see you soon?” she asked, hesitating to leave, wanting to hear an answer.

At her mention of her own clothing to borrow, Dorcas smirked and chuckled. “Well then it’s a done deal. You’ll be killing two birds with one stone bringing a halfblood into your home. If you get disowned you’re welcome to live on our couch for the rest of your days.” she quipped sarcastically, doubtful it would go that far though she’d heard rumors of people getting worse for going so far as marrying people who weren’t of pure blood. This, however, would be a harmless, slightly sexual introduction to Parthenia’s sexuality. Hardly so daunting she’d get disowned, right?

“If I wasn’t the black sheep already, I would definitely be then.” Thee grinned. “I’m always down to sleep on couches. It wouldn’t be anything they didn’t already know though, so I’m not planning on them being too shocked.”

“Well school’s around the corner. Maybe you can bring it and I can borrow it on a weekend?” she asked before shrugging. “I don’t mind. Margins are more fun to read than the actual book sometimes.” she chuckled, knowing half the time it was doodles and writing down sarcastic comments that kept her reading a book. Though she had a feeling Thee didn’t do the same annotative style that she did. Grinning at her words, she shrugged a shoulder. “Do I get my own leather outfit?” she flirted.

“Definitely, it’s on my list of things to take with me.” Thee didn’t leave anything at home of value anyway. Her father could be a spiteful man when he was drunk or mad or even on days that ended with a ‘Y’. “We look like the same size, you’re welcome to search through my cupboard and find something you like.” Thee flirted back with a wink.

Dorcas listened to the girl rant about the younger dragons, the information familiar but still bringing a smile to her face. She knew what she was talking about, and the mention of any research peaked her interest further. “No, you’re fine. Really. Any chance I could borrow it from you sometime? I’d love to read it.” she grinned, wanting to get her hands on as much as she could, even if she weren’t the biggest bookworm in the castle by a long shot.

Dorcas quirked a brow at her quip about being an illegitimate child, finding it funny but surprising that she joked about it. Still it made her laugh all the same. “Well, he’s a guy. Most of them get the upperhand in that sense. I’d just dress up in a dominatrix costume for your next fancy family gathering. Maybe bring a lucky girl to send a message.” she teased.

“Oh sure. My copy is a bit worn and has a lot of earmarks and notation but you’re welcome to give it a read. I can owl it to you if you want?” Thee was glad that Cas laughed when she made the joke about being illegitimate. It was complete nonsense of course. Her mother had had pureblood values instilled in her since birth and traditional pureblood women only slept with their husbands. A load of bullshit if you asked her because how were you supposed to know if they were compatible with you if you didn’t sleep together before you got married but to each their own. The only man her mother had ever slept with was her father and Parthenia was sure of that. “Oh great idea. I have heaps of those in my cupboard.” Thee grinned. “I’ll have to keep that in mind for the next one. Only if you join me.”

“What is it you like about it so much?” she asked, tilting her head slightly and enjoying the company of the girl in front of her. The fact that she’d yet to find anyone even remotely as interested in dragon taming as her said a lot about what kind of careers people wanted to go into this year. Most wanted to be aurors, and healers, and potion makers. Hardly left any focus on badass wild beasts of the wizarding world that needed an extra hand. Or just, you know, needed to not be extinct without burning the entire human race to the ground. As Thee spoke about her family’s dislike, her smile faltered a bit.

It sucked, the idea of feeling like you needed to be kept in the shadows over something that wasn’t even wrong, nor remotely something to be ashamed of. Then again, Dorcas wasn’t loud about her own orientation either. Not to her family at least. “I’m sorry to hear that.” she told her. “That’s part of the reason I don’t say much about myself. I still have no clue how my family would react if they knew I wasn’t exclusive to men.” she said, brushing a lock of hair from her face as she hugged herself around the waist.

“I enjoy working with my hands, it makes sense to me but I know certain spices of dragon really have a difficult time laying eggs and other have a hard time bonding with their babies once they’ve hatched which leads to the babies dying. Other’s are almost extinct because they only mate every so often and even then it’s difficult for them to make that connection. I’ve read some really interesting studies on dragon cross-breeding that the Welsh reserve is doing. I think helping to keep dragons from going extinct would be pretty cool and I’m rambling. Sorry.” Thee grinned, a faint blush across her cheeks.

She saw the smile falter on the other girls face and was about to say something when she said she wasn’t out because she was worried about what her family would say if they knew. Parthenia felt bad for tucking that bit of information aside. “See, I don’t get it though. My father’s younger brother is gay and everyone is totally groovy with him. I dunno, maybe I’m an illegitimate child.” Thee joked. “Maybe mother had an affair and I’m the product of it.”

Dorcas smiled as Thee talked about working with hatchlings, something about the detail making her think the other witch must be good with kids or at the very least good with baby animals. Meadowes briefly recalled a memory of when her class had to work with Mandrakes and figured the pureblooded witch must have done well if she hadn’t fainted. “That’s great. I personally prefer training the older ones as a caretaker, but they’re absolutely adorable when they’re newborn.” she mused before nodding as she spoke about Cookie Dough. Dorcas quirked a brow. “Allergic to milk? That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard.” she pouted before looking over at her when she spoke about blood status.

Don’t get her wrong, Dorcas had nothing against purebloods. They just often had a thing or two against her. Mostly a thing against her entire existence and that of her family. Low-key offensive, in her mind. But by Thee’s tone she didn’t seem bothered by the idea that Dorcas might not have been pureblooded and her hopes were further reassured by the way in which she made fun of the prejudice itself, chuckling at her mention of inbreeding before making an immediate mental note of the fact that Thee was gay, looking back at her and trying not to seem transparent. “How does that work in a pureblood family like yours?” she questioned. “Aren’t some of you set up to marry a wizard?” she asked, leaning against the wall.

“They’re so sweet.” Thee agreed. “Though, even the older ones are sweet. I’m just really interested in the breeding program.” She nodded sadly and placed her hand over her heart. “I know. The saddest.” Parthenia could see something was going on in Cas’ mind, and assumed that the girl wasn’t pureblood based on the expressions she made. So it was a good thing she’d spoken her mind. She was a terrible liar anyway, so it wasn’t like she could play a convincing pureblood daughter anyway. Thee shrugged. “Well they don’t really like me for it, but I dunno if that’s the only reason they don’t like me. Even when I was a kid and I had no idea what gay even was - just that I liked girls and that was normal and I didn’t need to tell anyone because my mother never told anyone she liked boys - they didn’t seem to like me. I was always left alone with my nurse maid. I’ve never been expected to marry though my younger brother is. I rarely have to go to events either. It’s like I’m the dirty secret.”

The whole idea amused Thee now. When she was little, it had been something that she really struggled with, but now it was just how things were. She didn’t have the energy to change it and she didn’t really want to. At least this way she was free to be herself and do her own thing.

“Really? That’s brilliant! I’ve heard of it, actually. They have the largest amount of endangered Catalonian Fireball!” she said excitedly, smiling brightly at Thee and chuckling at the name. For a long time growing up she’d often been teased for her name lacking femininity, but after a reassuring talk with her father and a few years of practicing developing a backbone Dorcas embraced her name. She loved it, actually. Being called Cas wasn’t a problem though, not when Thee and her were getting along well like this. Laughing again at the little dance, she nodded. “Yeah, sure!” she said, closing her mouth around the spoon and tasting the sample. “Mm, it’s good.” she nodded. “Not as fantastic as timeless cookie dough, but good.” she teased.

“You buying everything for our last year then huh?” she asked.

“Yes! Exactly! They’re my favourite, I’d love to be able to work with them the most but I’d be happy to be able to work with any. My dream is to work in the birthing and nursery suites.” Finally, someone to geek out about dragons with. She watched as her mouth closed around the spoon and Thee shook her head to remove the thoughts that were flying into it. “Cookie dough? Oh, that’s one of the muggle flavours they have. I’ve never been brave enough to try those. I can’t have milk products anyway, I’m allergic. No one at St. Mungos has any idea why though as it’s a typically muggle problem, I mean occasionally muggleborns and half-bloods get it but I’m a pureblood so they’re not really sure where that translates. My father was so serious when they tried to suggest that we had muggle blood back in our family somewhere. His face was hilarious. We’re sacred 28 though...” She looked at the girl, unsure if she could say the next thing on her mind. She wasn’t sure what her blood status was, not that it mattered to Thee in the slightest. “Y’know, if you buy into that crap. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a product of all that inbreeding. Thank Merlin I’m gay and I don’t have to worry about passing any of that shit onto any kids I might have.” She was not afraid of who she was, so she said it proudly. If Cas had a problem with it then she could just go straight back to being Dorcas.

Dorcas laughed at her words before answering her. “Dragon taming. Mostly in northern Europe if I can. What about you?” she asked, smiling over at the pretty witch. Dorcas watched as Thee paid extra, wanting to tell her she really didn’t have to but it was too late, she was already setting the money down. And then to call herself an arsehole immediately after made Dorcas laugh again. This girl was walking contradictions apparently. It was endearing. “Hardly.” she told her, shooting her a wink.

“Name’s Dorcas Meadowes. I’m in Gryffindor house.” The brunette said. “Pleasure’s mine.”

“Same! I think I’d like to work in the Welsh reserve the most though.” Thee grinned. “Well it’s a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, Dorcas Meadowes of Gryffindor house. I shall call you ‘Cas’.” She took a bite of the ice cream and did a happily little dance. “It’s so gooood. It literally tastes just like the sweets. Want some?” She took a scoop of the two flavours and held them out to Cas. “Pink Coconut Ice and Crystallized Pineapple, my favourite.”

Dorcas smirked and nodded. “Thee it is then.” she approved, liking the sound of the nickname before the other brunette spoke up again. “Yeah, actually. All three.” she chuckled. “I don’t blame you though, I’m the same with the first and third one and I’m almost always trying not to blow something up with that course in the middle.” she chuckled. “I wouldn’t have taken it, but you know, requirements.” Dorcas shrugged, looking over at the ice cream parlor as Thee went on about the last scoops and limited edition before grabbing her free hand and tugging her back to the store, shamelessly cutting the line. “Griffith!” she whispered loudly, getting his attention.

“You got anymore of that uh…” Dorcas lifted up Thee’s other hand to show him which ice cream flavors she’d gotten since she didn’t know the name. “A thief from my store nearly trampled her. Now Thee barely got out alive, but at least she can walk. The real tragedy was her ice cream. It signed a DNR, hit the cobblestone, we couldn’t do a thing. Any chance you’ve got some more?” she bantered, and her quick-witted conversation seemed to much for the tense man.

“I’ll grab it, I’ll grab it.” he said grouchily, moving to the back and serving a cup of the same scoops this time before gesturing for them to come around the counter and giving it to Thee then pointing a finger at Dorcas. “You tell anyone my secret, I’m telling your mother not to let you see the tail end of a broom stick for a good seven months!” he said, before nodding and walking off. Dorcas smiled and leaned over the counter. “Thank you, Griffith!” she said, before turning back to Thee. “Told you.” she smirked.

Thee winced. “I’m sorry. I swear, anyone could strip down and do the hula and I still wouldn’t notice.” Scratching the back of her head, she perked up at the girl mentioning the three classes being a requirement. “Oh? What do you want to go into?” She asked excitedly. Unlike a lot of her peers, Parthenia was actually excited about graduating and starting the next steps towards her career. Then she was being pulled back towards the shop. “Really, I can come back in la-” But she was already bantering with the man behind the counter. Thee watch in amazement as the man brought back a cup piled high with both flavours. “Thanks you.” She told him wide eyed, but he waved her off.

“You did tell me. This is more than I paid for though, I should pay the difference. I’d feel bad.” Reaching into her robe pocket, she dug around for the change. “Damn, I’m going to have to stop into Gringotts after this.” She placed the money on the counter with a little extra as a tip. “Thanks again, really.” She turned to the other girl. “And thanks for working a little magic. I never did get your name. Though that’s on me for being in the same classes for six years and not knowing it.” She winced. “I’m an arsehole.”

Dorcas chuckled at her salute, nodding and looking over her shoulder for a brief moment but there was no sight of him. And she was partly relieved, but mainly hoping she didn’t have to chase anymore idiots out into the street. Looking down at the Quills they were thankfully still in tact before looking back up at the other witch. She recognized her from school, since everyone always made the purebloods such a big deal. “You’re uhm…Parthenia right?” she asked, not using her surname or full name because she wasn’t always fond of the tradition of doing so with acquaintances.

Hell, it just made it that much harder to get to know them didn’t it? Unless it was a nickname or she was playing coach to a team of Quidditch players, Dorcas had a habit of using first names and damming the rest to hell. Glancing at the girl’s ice cream she quirked a brow noticing it was melting and sliding off her scone.

“You…sure you don’t want another one of those?” she asked, a scoop sliding back down to the floor. “I have pull with the manager, I might be able to get you a refill without waiting in that line again.”

“Thee, please.” Parthenia replied, “I get enough of Parthenia when I’m at home or in trouble at school.” How did she know her name? Thee would have noticed the girl before, surely. Unless it was one of those classes that she enjoyed so much that she was in her own world with the teacher or whatever she was working with that day. “I’m really sorry but would we have shared Herbology, Potions or Care of Magical Creatures class? I’m having a hard time remembering you and I’m usually so focused on those three classes that if it doesn’t have to do with the class work I have a hard time registering anything that isn’t feeding me information.”

When she asked about the ice cream, Thee noticed that hers was currently dripping down her hand. “Oh no!” She pouted, quickly licking up what she could. “It was that last scoops, so I don’t think even that would get me another. They’re limited edition, so they go fast and they’ll be gone by the time school goes back. I’ll try and come into tomorrow before the back to school ball my mother is throwing. Thanks though.”

“You’re getting robbed.”

“What?” Dorcas whirled around, looking away from the sarcastic customer (a fifth year Ravenclaw, tall and scrawny with a pile of books in hand) and just barely caught someone in a long emerald green cloak duck out of the store. Hopping onto and over the counter, she ran right after them in her very predictable way, calling out that she’d be right back to the suddenly bitter student for being left unattended.

Running out of the store, Dorcas tried to trail the quick individual through the crowd in Diagon Alley, excusing herself every half a second before the business ebbed just long enough for her to spot someone jinx the thief with a pair of jelly legs. Glancing at them, she was surprised by the help but grateful as she turned the random man around and grabbed the expensive set of quills from him. “The nerve of you!” she said, undoing the hex. “Leave before I call Magical Enforcement.” she huffed, blowing a lock of hair from her face as he ran off then turning to the person who’d helped her and walking over to them. “Thanks. I thought for sure I’d have to pay for these.”

Parthenia usually left her school shopping to the last minute and this year was no exception. Once again, Thee had been left to her own devices that morning with Looki helping out at the manor once more. By late afternoon, most of her shopping had been been done and sent back to Rosier Hall so she decided that an ice cream from Fortescue’s would be a proper reward. As it was a warm late-summers day, the line up was long but it was well worth it to get her hands on the new pink coconut ice and crystallised pineapple (her two favourite sweets) flavoured sorbets Fortescue was selling. However she’d barely gotten two feet from the store when some idiot came running past and knocked into her causing her to drop the ice cream. With lightning fast reflexes she’d stopped the treat just before it hit the ground and had the twat in a jelly legs jinx. “Those were the last scoops arsehole.” She growled, narrowing her eyes. “I’ve waited all week to get down here and try them and you nearly cost me that.”

Scooping down to pick up the iced treat, she notice someone else speaking to the guy. Parthenia licked her ice cream, savouring the flavour as she studied the exchange. ‘So the crook stole some quills and that’s why he’d been in a hurry.’ She thought, then the girl had turned and Thee’s breath caught in her throat for a moment. The girl was stunning. And most likely straight. Damn. It took her a moment to realize she was being spoken to. “Huh? Oh, right.” Thee replied. “All in the name of justice.” She saluted her with the hand that held the ice cream cone.

“Exactly.” Thee agreed. Pathenia didn’t have a lot of girlfriends, most of the pureblood girls were too snobby fo her tastes and it was just easier to get along with guys but Lily seemed like she could become a good friend. “I’m a beater on the Ravenclaw team. I enjoy it. How come you never tried out?”
