The developers of Prison Architect posted a video response to Pedercini’s critique that is about thirty minutes long. In some ways their response is thoughtful. They at least acknowledge that prisons are a serious subject, not to be trifled with. They make it clear that they had hoped to avoid making a shallow or trivial game about prisons. But in watching their response, I felt an unsettling sense that they were selectively compiling useful feedback that would help them make a better prison game, as if it were simply a question of smoothing out bugs. It seemed as if the game’s fundamental premise and purpose remained uninterrogated by its creators. They talk a lot about their intentions: We never intended to set the game in America. We never intended for riots to be so frequent and bloody. We haven’t had time to balance the game yet. While the developers acknowledge that the image, or “myth,” of the American prison is so pervasive in global media as to be unavoidable, they also rebuff Pedercini’s assertion that they set the game in the United States, rather than deal directly with the implications of unintentionally or uncritically regurgitating this image. This is especially puzzling, considering the current promotional material for the game promises an opportunity to build a maximum security, or “supermax,” facility, a horrid invention which the United States has been instrumental in developing. Drawing from the realities of the American criminal justice system, Pedercini suggests in his piece that players could be given the option to lobby politicians to introduce legislation favoring their prison; they might push for mandatory minimum sentencing, for example, or harsher sentences for juveniles. In response, one of the Prison Architect developers says, “This is quite sinister…this is very dark stuff…if we put these options into the game, we’re treading into terribly terribly dark territory,” as if the chosen subject matter itself were not already sinister, as if the options of building execution chambers and sniper towers were not just as dark.

HCI research from Nimesha Ranasinghe, Pravar Jain, Shienny Karwita, Eason Chow, David Tolley, and Ellen Yi-Luen Do are VR headset sensor attachments which provide sense of temperature within experiences:
As Virtual Reality (VR) experiences become increasingly popular, simulating sensory perceptions of environmental conditions is essential for providing an immersive user experience. We present Ambiotherm, a wearable accessory for existing Head Mounted Displays (HMD), which simulates real-world environmental conditions such as ambient temperatures and wind conditions. The system consists of a wearable accessory for the HMD and a mobile application, which generates interactive VR environments and controls the thermal and wind stimuli. The thermal stimulation module is attached to the user’s neck while two fans are focused on the user’s face to simulate wind conditions. Results from initial user experiments show that the participants perceive VR environments to be more immersive when external thermal and wind stimuli are presented as part of the VR experience.

We don't need a
This argument has been made before – indeed, it underpinned the wider “games for change” movement – and I’m sympathetic to it. Exploring complex systems through games has fundamentally changed my worldview, and I’m sure I’m not alone. But players come to games for a diversity of reasons and with a diversity of goals which aren’t always in sympathy with the designer’s. For instance, Spent, a budgeting game intended to make players more sympathetic towards poor people, actually had the opposite effect on some players. Since they could ‘win’ the game, they concluded that poor people should be able to win capitalism. This is not to say games can’t build “systems literacy” – I really believe they can. But their educational benefits may be more limited in scope, and apply to fewer people, than their bounciest boosters believe. To be clear, I don’t think McDevitt is in that category: his talk was sober and modest in the power it attributed to games. Systems education should be at least part of any vision of how games can change the world.

EXA: The Infinite Instrument
Musical VR app from Aesthetic Interactive is a 3D audio sequencing environment allowing customization of virtual instrument interfaces:
EXA is a musical instrument unlike any other. Crafted exclusively for virtual reality, EXA’s vision is to bring the feeling and expressiveness of playing real-world musical instruments into an incredibly versatile virtual space – offering an entirely new dimension of musical creativity and performance.
Musical shapes, called “ringers”, are the main building-block for creating musical structures within EXA. From the tip of the drawing tool, ringers are drawn into existence, springing into the form of ellipses, rectangles, triangles, or lines. Of these shapes, lines behave like guitar strings, while the others behave like two-sided drums.
When struck, a ringer bursts into sound, glowing and resonating to its tones. By sampling audio from Soundfont (SF2) packages, which are often freely-available online, ringers can produce any imaginable sound. EXA ships with hundreds of Soundfonts, from strings to drums to synths, and allows users to import their own.

What else? Sand Garden [official site] got you to pile sand up in a box in order to affect the height of terrain in a game map, thus attempting to please the inhabitants who would want to live at particular altitudes. There was the laser lyre of Orpheus Quest [official site] which was basically a Guitar Hero-style music game and you’d “play” the notes on screen by passing your fingers through the corresponding green laser “string” on the instrument. The lack of haptic feedback made this incredibly difficult so I ended up patting my fingers on the emitters rather than making a plucking motion when I played.
