Although I had previously considered switching us over to Ko-fi, all my work is still on an indefinite hiatus due to medical issues with fatigue and brainfog that have been a bit too frustrating to overcome in order to make that change.

If you are a current Patron, I am advising that you cancel your membership with Partway Decent Productions, as members-only content will now be made free and publicly accessible. Although I do not condone Patreon's shady practices, it will take me longer than I am comfortable with accepting money from members to transition to a different service, especially when links on existing published episodes lead to our public Patreon posts. I will continue to enable paused billing each month.

Many thanks for your patronage during our active months. I will always cherish that. Accepting that my health comes first has been difficult for me to come to terms with as someone who has spent most of my working life valuing what I make but I appreciate the patience and understanding the listeners of Trial and Error have shown me since making this decision in 2022. I hope that one day I can return to creating audio projects but, for now, this break will need to continue.

Hiatus update

Hi all,

I'm writing you here to announce that this hiatus certainly is more "indefinite" than initially intended. Persisting health issues—immune system, mental, and pre-existing disability-related—have caused me a significant amount of delay in returning to normal functionality and I sincerely apologize for my lack of communication of this to listeners.

Partway Decent Productions' Patreon page remains open to accepting new patrons, however billing will remain paused until after season 1 has been completed. In show-related news, I can reveal that season 2 is similarly a 10-episode run, episodes being slightly longer, and will not revolve around Harriet or Dr. Goodman's study (but fear not; Harriet and the study constructs will still appear in bonus fillers for patrons).

Being a one-person writing-and-editing machine (that just so happens to malfunction a little too regularly) is a slow and difficult process, and I appreciate your patience during this time. I also want to thank listeners who continue relistening to episodes and I especially want to thank the wonderful, amazing people who have provided their voices for recurring characters in this series so far.

Patreon has laid off their security team

I know this isn't an update on my interactive fiction game but I just wanted interactive fiction creators and other people who have Patreons to be aware about this issue.

For creators with a Patreon, I would recommend using a password manager to generate a randomly generated password so that when Patreon has (another) security breach, your password will be unique.

For creators that may want to migrate their Patreon content to another website, there is a WordPress plugin that can be used with a WordPress membership plugin that lets patrons access your content like on Patreon.

Ko-fi is also a good alternative that I know a lot of interactive fiction creators use for their work.

Hopefully there won't be any serious security breaches with Patreon but who knows what will happen...

look i’m gonna be as nice about this as i can but i genuinely earnestly think the reason we have a whole generation of queer teens happily begging for table scraps from the walt disney corporation is because no one listens to welcome to night vale anymore. wtnv was a generations introduction to explicit positive queer rep, and for some people, myself included, queer rep at all. and it sets the bar at a reasonable place. from the first episode, our narrator, a man, is outright stated to be in love with another man. this is taken seriously, and treated as healthy and normal, rather than secret or shameful. once you have that, you can’t go back to crumbs. and you certainly can’t go back to pretending crumbs are a four course meal.

Podcasts in general are a wealth of representation and I adore them. I think it was the first time main characters were stated to be asexual for me, not just implied or a secondary character. I’ve been branching out more from my comfort podcasts and I keep finding new things to enjoy in them. If your looking for representation and like having stuff playing in the background I can recommend my favorites!

I can't recommend podcasts enough. Forget begging for scraps, there's shows where finding a character who isn't queer is a challenge, but you're guaranteed at least a couple in each one. Rep I've encountered includes:

Acespec and arospec characters of all kinds, including leads. Aroaces, alloaces, aroallos, greyro, greyace, you get the idea

Trans leads voiced (and often written) by trans folks, who's stories aren't all about struggles to be recognised (though plenty address it if you're after that), and who are allowed to just exist in the world

Heaps of nb characters, including leads and even characters who use neopronouns or "gendered" pronouns

Cool lesbians and gay characters who's stories aren't coming out stories or light romances (but plenty of romances too if that's your thing)

Polyam characters!

So many bi characters, and even some non-bi mspecs

Older queer characters

Etc.
