BAD MEMORY THEORY (Deltarune)

*Deltarune and Undertale Spoilers*

It’s crazy how fast people find secrets in these games. I watched a video on youtube of a Deltarune player receiving an egg from a man behind a tree (possibly ‘Gaster’). The egg can be carried to Asgore’s shop in the light world, and put in the fridge (If you drop it, it says “what egg?” as if it doesn’t exist). When the player checks the fridge again, they’ll find that instead of an egg and the pickle jar, there are now two eggs. Apparently the egg will persist into new save games.

This got me thinking about how the enemy in Undertale, Memoryhead. This enemy is found with the amalgamates, but isn’t made up of recognizable monsters like the rest of them. It’s interesting is that It’s bullets are Gaster-like faces. Memory head also says “Lorem ipsum docet”(meaning something like teaching through pain). But it’s more important that Memoryhead can put a ‘piece of itself’ into your inventory- the item being called ‘bad memory’. When consumed normally, this item damages the player slightly. However, if the player has less than 3 HP, this item is a full heal.

As we know, all 3 Gaster followers will recall a ‘bad memory’ related to Gaster (Clam girl hints towards meeting Susie in Deltarune). One of the Gaster Followers is holding a round oval object with a face (mentioned to be a ‘piece of Gaster’)- what if that’s ‘an egg’? Rather, what if the ‘egg’ is a ‘bad memory’? The pickle jar turning into another egg- is that what happens to things that come into contact with the ‘egg’ for too long?

Now let’s discuss Goner Kid. Goner kid talks about how they are afraid of not existing, and tells the player to forget them. If the other Gaster Followers recite ‘bad memories’, maybe the player is meant to forget ‘these memories’.

Finally, this brings us to the message in the song of Deltarune’s credits, as well as hidden in Sans’ lab with the picture of 3 smiling people. “Don’t forget (I’m with you in the dark)”. Only in the dark/ only with low HP can the player be fully healed. So there is something to be learned from this painful memory that can lead to great healing later on in Deltarune’s story. Because pain is our favorite food- as the survey would say.

Maybe I’m like that English teacher that loves metaphors too much? It’s a fun idea anyway, haha! Only time will tell as we wait for the rest of Toby’s story. : )

[DELTARUNE CHAPTER 2 SPOILERS]

Bringing this back because Chapter 2 is filled with eggs.

If you have an egg in your inventory when you talk to Temmie at the end of the game, you can see how many eggs you’ve collected. I should mention that even though the fridge egg seems to have cloned itself, only the original eggs seem to count. We can’t put the Chapter 2 egg in the fridge, so we hide it in Sans’ store. It’s like we have an Easter egg hunt to find the eggs, and then we set up another one by hiding them elsewhere.

[NEW EGG LORE]

I was browsing the Spamton Sweepstakes page minding my own business when one of the fake ads links to more egg lore? After all this time?? On a webpage that probably won’t be up for more than 24 hours???

It starts like this:

Mentioning the music glitching out because of a glitchy egg appearing references how the music loop in Deltarune restarts to the beginning of a song whenever the player walks between two rooms to get the egg room to appear.

Clicking a link at the bottom will continue to a black and white page:

The author (likely Noelle) cannot throw away the egg, just like in Deltarune, and just like with Undertale’s ‘Bad Memory’ item.

The egg ‘leaving because of happiness’ is what shook me though. There’s potential for it to be referencing how bad memories can fade if you’re living a happy life and moving on from whatever caused the bad memory.

The egg having a name that can’t be remembered might allude to the egg being a piece of Gaster. I thought the name could’ve also been Spamton, but Noelle references downloading spam and putting it into her game- creating a scenario with multiplying pipis (and likely Spamton) that appears separate from the events described above.

I should also mention that a skirt on Fangamer’s website has Papyrus behind a tree that looks like the one in Deltarune’s egg room. Implying he may be the man in the game as well:

If not related to Gaster stuff, there definitely seems to be a link between Asriel and memory items now. Especially with the ‘Memory’ part of his theme in the ost.

Maybe the real bad memory was the 99 good memories we made along the way… Wait no, that’s horrifying.

Now that Chapters 3 and 4 are out, we have more direct connections to the Eggs and memories.

We also get to see how ‘The Forgotten Man’ talks. More whimsical? from the ominous ‘Gaster’ voice at the start of the game, though notably still in all caps. Maybe the Papyrus skirt wasn’t a misdirection? Who knows.

Interestingly, Kris seems to be the one forgetting the man. In chapter 4, they draw him repeatedly until their hand can draw the man’s figure from muscle memory, seemingly without them remembering what they saw. Yet they still paint a tree over it, and ‘can never wash it all away’ when cleaning the graphite dust off. Still, I think it could be a bittersweet memory more than an outright bad one.

Susie can embezzle a ‘Bitter Tear’ from Miss Mizzle (and/or large donation?). It’s a full heal item, like a ‘bad memory’ can be under low HP. I wonder if we’ll need them for whatever ‘ROOTS’ is later on? I’m very curious and excited to see where it leads.

Can a memory be evidence? Or is it evidence of a memory?

I’m reminded of Kris in chapter 4 in the hospital art therapy place where Kris draws over and over to the point where their hand can remember what they forgot through muscle memory. Could be concerning in the ‘Kris loses their hand’ theory comes to light. But I think about how these things could be used as evidence to prove of multiple time loops- if the game being a time loop theory ends up being correct. Sans also keeps his evidence- the drawing of three people. It’s already suspect that Deltarune Sans gives Kris breadcrumbs to follow in the weird route, so he likely already knows somethings up at least in that route.

I guess we’ll know when the time comes, which is good because I like knowing things.
