what she says: i’m fine
what she means: a stunned and speechless mia dolan sits down in awe of the existence of the dazzling jazz club she has just entered as her eyes meet the man onstage that she used to know, the man she’ll always love, regardless of their diverging paths, regardless of how far apart their dreams took them from each other. as she hears him hesitantly play the instrumental theme from their past on the piano, she is transported to an alternate reality- one where her play was a huge success and she received a standing ovation from the crowd, one where keith had never offered sebastian a position in the messengers, one where sebastian had kissed her senseless instead of coldly brushing past her when he lost his job, one where sebastian had moved to paris with her and started a family with her, an alternate reality where they could have made it work and they could have been together forever. he could’ve been her husband and that would’ve been their kid. but in this alternate technicolor reality, sebastian does not have it all. he would not have had his jazz club, and would have sacrificed his dreams to fulfill mia’s. there was no version of reality where sebastian and mia could have had it all together. ultimately did sebastian and mia’s individual relationships with los angeles come in between their love or was their love always second to their dreams? in the epilogue, sebastian and mia have regret over the choices they’ve made even if it landed them right where they had always wanted to be. the movie focuses on their separate journeys and doesn’t allow the characters to be selfless and give up their dreams for each other and that’s okay. when sebastian and mia sit on a bench after mia’s audition, sebastian knows that she’ll get the role and move to paris and not once does he try to persuade her to think about them and consider that before making any decision. they quietly acknowledge that this may be the moment where their lives take them in different directions away from each other, and the seasons that they spent together were some of the best moments of their lives, ones that they’ll always hold close to their heart. in this moment they can do nothing but let the other know that they’ll always love them no matter what happens. and in that moment you know that they won’t get their traditional happy ending. and that’s okay, because that doesn’t diminish the love they have for one another any less. when mia gets up to leave the club and turns back and looks at sebastian for one last time, they smile at one another and it’s beautiful and soul crushing because there is a look of pride and unabashed love and admiration on their faces for the other’s achievements and in that moment and for the rest of their dazzling lives they have come to terms with the choices they have made that have brought them to this point and they are alright with loving each other from afar
baby: *incomprehensible babbling*
me: WHAT!? really??? no way :0
This is actually really good for babies’ brain development. You’re laying the groundwork for conversation, teaching them through example that people take turns talking and listening.
Did you know that babies from affluent families hear an average of thirty MILLION more words before age 5 than babies in families below the poverty line? For context, Les Miserables is about 650,000 words and it looks like this:
So it’s like reading this book 46 times.* And that’s not the total number of spoken words, that’s the GAP between affluent and poor babies. And these are the years in which the brain undergoes the most development. It’s mind-boggling.
So what I’m saying is: keep doing the thing. Do it to all babies, all the time. Narrate your day. Ask them for opinions. (“Should we buy the large bag of potatoes or the small bag?” “Gaabooglagje.” “Yes, just as I thought.”) Point out colors and shapes and letters. Let them scribble outside the lines and treat their babble like talk. Sing them nursery rhymes and Raffi songs and songs from the radio. All of these things are going to build their brains to prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.
*Please do not read Les Mis 46 times to an infant. They don’t even care about the Parisian sewer system.
That last part though
