Shoutout to younger people in fandom:
It’s okay to enjoy “problematic” fiction.
It’s okay to draw fanart and write fanfiction that appeals to you, and you alone.
You’re allowed to ship whatever you want. Let me repeat this for emphasis: YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SHIP WHATEVER YOU WANT PERIOD.
Your own enjoyment and entertainment are valid reasons to write, draw, or consume something.
If this enjoyment takes the form of sexual gratification, that’s also a valid reason to writer, draw, or consume something.
Fiction does not have to be morally pure. Fiction allows us to explore things that we wouldn’t want to experience in real life, things like violence, sexual violence, drug abuse, sexual taboos, or kinks: all kinds of weird or disturbingt things, and that’s okay.
No, the narrative does not have to condemn these things explicitly.
You don’t owe other fans an explanation or apology for the things you enjoy in fiction
If someone asks you to reveal personal information, it’s okay to tell them to fuck off.
There’s no such thing as a fandom police. Whoever claims to have the authority to tell you what is or isn’t acceptable for you to enjoy, is just arrogating that right. Their strategy only works if you let them have this power, so don’t.
It’s up to each person individually to create a “safe space” for themselves.
Other people’s mental health is not your responsibilty.
Not wanting to hear about anyone’s personal trauma does not make you a bad person.
Sure.
Racism (under this white washing), homophobia and transphobia are never okay. I don’t care if you enjoy it, you’re actively hurting others. Fuck off.
Please acknowledge that some ships are mired in white supremacy, abuse and/or rape apologism, racism and/or homophobia. Again you’re likely actively be hurting other fans. If you can live with that, okay then.
One’s personal enjoyment is valid yes, but sometimes it is harmful to others. Should your joy come at another person’s expense? How is that even remotely okay to you?
Speaking of, fetishing same gender couples are not okay. It’s dehumanizing and homophobic. As is perpetuating racist stereotypes. Again, fuck off.
Here I concur. Though there are things you might want to stay away from. Such as white people writing about slavery without having the first clue about it, or gentiles trying to write about the Holocaust, or straight people writing about conversion therapy, just to name a few. (Also none of this should be used as back drop for a romance. If you want to write about serious issues I won’t necessarily discourage it, but fucking treat them with the respect they deserve!)
Explicitly, no. The mark of an even half decent creator is that we can put in subtle messages into our works, while dealing with problematic stuff. Also other people’s sexuality and gender is not a fucking kink.
If you enjoy things that are racist, homophobic, anti Semitic, or transphobic you bloody well do owe other fans (fans of color, lgbt fans, Jewish fans) an apology. And that’s for a start. Maybe then… consider bloody stopping.
On this we agree.
There is no fandom police. There is on the other hand fans of color, lgbt fans, Jewish fans, disabled fan. If one of them tells you that something is harmful, maybe stop and listen to them rather than get defensive. Or should your fun and enjoyment trump theirs?
No. People should have a fucking right to be free of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ect. Asking to be respected as a person is not ever about creating “a safe space”. (Here it should be noted that when we do block people who are harmful to us, we are the ones who are told we create a schism and are “dividing the fandom”. Not the ones who made it intolerable to us in the first place.)
If you deliberately go for triggering people and shove something in every tag under the sun no matter how irrelevant that tag is, then yeah you are responsible. Especially when you don’t tag your “problematic” parts so people can you know, actually avoid it. (And yes this has happened with at least one of the ships you tagged this with, if you’ve been around for more than a couple of months you know this.)
True.
Listen, fandom is supposed to be a fun place on this we agree. But it’s getting really fucking noticeable that it’s only supposed to be certain groups having fun and the rest of us even trying to enjoy ourselves is a constant fight against racism, homophobic, transphobic, anti Semitic and/or ableist bs, then get told to stop ruining other people’s fun when we talk about it. Even when they are more than happy to destroy ours.
If fandom isn’t a safe space and we’re all supposed to create our own, why the flying fuck is it that fandom is supposed to be immune to criticism? You don’t have to listen to us - in fact most of you will shout very loudly to drown out any critique - but somehow the mere existence of our critique needs to be attacked. And please stop erasing the legitimate critique done by fans of color, Jewish fans, lgbt fans, disable fans ect and pretend that it’s all some “anti bs” or “wank”. Because that’s what strangely enough always happens, the erasure and silencing of minority fans’ voices. Just like who fandoms dominated by Black fans are always the ones that are considered “toxic”, no matter how anyone else behaves.
Take your own advice and create your own safe space. Block every person on this platform that dares to address the rampant racism, homophobia, transphobia, anti Semitism, ect in fandom.
Of course, that would mean blocking a great number of fans, because here’s the thing. There’s a huge number of fans of color, lgbt fans and Jewish fans, ect in fandom. We’re here, we’ve always been here, and we’re tired beyond words of constantly being told to shut up and attacked when we voice our discomfort and disgust at being met with the same shit in fandom that we have to fight against irl. And then have the same people who try to shut us up turn around and go “fandom is supposed to be fun”, “ship and let ship (because I want to be a racist homophobe)”, “fandom isn’t your safe space (but it is mine)”.
Well your fun is far too often ruining ours. And we’re not going to be quiet about it any more. If you have a problem with us being fans and active in fandom, please do block us all. You clearly mean us nothing but harm anyway.
I’ve seen a lot of variations of this discussion on my dash, from both sides, and I genuinely think that - while there are valid arguments to be made for the original post, it also functions as a sign of obliviousness that can only come from privilege.
“I want to be able to read dirty bad wrong stuff without feeling shamed about it” vs “I want to be treated like a human being.”
This is like, White Feminism: Fandom Trope Edition.
That’s exactly what it is.
Straight men who infantilize women’s friendships have no fucking survival instinct. Like my uncle is always making fun of and rolling his eyes at my aunt’s friend lunches and telephone dates with her lady friends, teasing her like she’s a gossipy teenage girl in high school drama. And my aunt just laughs about it but I know for a fact that if it wasn’t for her best friend K, she would have probably set him on fire by now.
Like straight men are capable of maybe a quarter of the indepth emotional labor and support women do for each other. Like men can literally have one friend named Bob that they go fishing with once a year and still be content for life. Then they think it’s cute and girlish that their wives have these long term, integrated, emotionally intense relationships with women but like…LOL, it’s not because men don’t need those kinds of relationships, it’s just that they get it all from their wives while offering peanuts in return. PEANUTS.
Like if your woman is on the phone for 2 hours with her friend and you think that’s childish of her, just know that she spent half of that time getting the support that you should be giving her (but are incapable of) and the rest lamenting what a giant fucking baby manchild you are.
This is how homophobia and misogyny hurts men: it makes these kinds of in-depth, deeply emotionally invested friendships a feminine thing to do, and therefore unmanly (and un-straight) for men to do. Men are brought up to shy away from cultivating these kinds of deep and platonic friendships with other men. Because, you know, if you talk to your male friends all the time and hang out with them and cry in front of them and hug all the time and lean on each other (emotionally and physically) when you need support, it makes you gay and womanly. Which is, apparently, the worst thing you can be.
I’ve read articles and personal stories about and by men, talking about experiences they’ve had that have shown them how painfully out of touch they are with their own emotions and their own ability to open up and connect with people, including themselves.
I worry about men a lot. I worry about the number of men who find themselves incapable of providing emotional support for their friends, their significant others, and themselves, all because of how they’ve been raised to bury and ignore their more vulnerable emotions and tactile tendencies because they’ve been taught that this kind of closeness has to be stamped out at all costs.
!!!!! So important.
So so so important
Studies have shown that this sort of emotional shallowness is a leading factor in why men are more likely to be violent, to drown their sorrows in drug and alcohol abuse, and to successfully commit suicide.
They throw all their eggs in one basket with a significant other, or at times a parent, and when problems arise in that relationship, because they have no other relationships to speak of, they quickly turn to destruction.
This is why I often give out advice that people need to expand on their relationships. You literally CAN’T have it all hinge on a single person, it is a horrific idea and it will destroy you and the things and people you love. You HAVE to have relationships with other people.
Anyone with any mental health issue can tell you that the inability to talk it out, the lack of having someone to turn to, makes things go careening downhill, faster than we can catch them back.
Somehow this is considered an acceptable way of being for men, and their lashing out is “just how men are”. It’s more masculine to shoot yourself than to take medication. It’s more masculine to beat your partners than to have a conversation with them. It’s more masculine to bottle everything up until it erupts and people die, than it is to simply ask for help.
And people want to blame women and feminism for it, for “making men afraid”, or simply try to list the likelihood of surviving suicide and avoiding drug abuse as “female privilege” or something that is a nature-given trick of “biological sex”, rather than address the very serious issue of toxic masculinity and extreme, self-destructive hatred of being perceived as anything like women.

Please please please call these reps and the reps in your own state. We NEED to maintain protection for these species, as it is the only way to preserve the ecosystems that we DIRECTLY DEPEND ON for carbon sequestering, clean water, and clean air!!

FUCKING HELL IT’S BACK FROM LAST YEAR
This literally gets reblogged every 15th of the month. It’s almost two years old. It’s beautiful.
listen up ya’ll this post is 6 years old now and you’re still reblogging it. every month. once a month, my notifications blow up for this one video, but only until the 16th. then the notes on this vid completely stop. it’s so eerily spot on and impressive how you just all collectively know what to do. if I’m not online, people irl still remind me that it’s the 15th. thank you for six surreal years of me wondering if I completely fucking lost it. here’s to the 15th
