FORCE OF NATURE Bolts of lightning crackle in the midst of the erupting Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull, in April. The eruption spread ash plumes throughout the atmosphere, grounding around 100,000 commercial flights across Europe. Credit: R. Th. Sigurdsson/Arctic-Images.com
ANCIENT ARACHNIDS Some 165 million years old, this spider fossil from Inner Mongolia looks very similar to modern plectreurid spiders, suggesting there has been little evolutionary change since the Jurassic period. Credit: P. A. Selden Univ. Kansas
CRADLED ON A SHRUB The egg of a Reakirt’s blue butterfly (Hemiargus isola) nestles on the bud of a powderpuff (Mimosa strigillosa) in this six-times-magnified image taken by David Millard for Nikon’s Small World competition. Credit: D. Millard/Nikon Small World
The artists formerly known as Pearl Harbour continue their obsession with Russia, lets face it who wouldn't, Russia is pretty AWESOME with this excellent track named after what is basically the Russian term for ‘hipster’. They’ve pulled in the not Russian, but quite hip, uber-weird hypna-pop star Ariel Pink on “ambient rainclouds, drum machines and other sonic sparkles”. The B-side to this Mexican Summer release is named “Put Medved to Bedved”. I’m not sure Putin (aka Batman) will approve – seeing as Medvedev is his Robyn!
We all a little wild streak!
