Zarkon’s hand falls back to his side, limp. Alfor’s hand phases into his chest with no resistance, like a quiet sigh echoing through the night. The world around them ripples and fades, the image doubling up momentarily before it is lost in a dim purple glow.
Zarkon is still. His eyes are empty, and dead.
There is a hiss of movement around them; discontent slithers through the air, but dares not come close to Alfor’s light, nor to the faded echo that answers it.
Zarkon’s hand twitches, his pupils focusing and unfocusing. A long-held breath slips out between his parted lips as they finally alight in flickering yellow, the echo’s presence weak and struggling to stay in place.
The name is spoken with reverence, released from him in a quiet breath; voice and lips do not quite work in tandem.
“ W͢he̢r̕e̷.͞..̵a̛re͠ we?”
“A place of shadows… but only if you deem to keep it so.”
Finally allowing even a flickering moment of open ache, liquid heat pricked at the edges of his vision–and were he living still, ash would be curling in his lungs.
in the end, he was nothing more than a ghost, seeking to cleanse a beatless heart.
“Pry away those choking fingers, old friend… I am here, I am listening. Bring forth that star still nestled between those ribs of yours.”
Don’t you slip away again, hold onto me.
The word echoes around them, as if repeated by a thousand disembodied hisses. The darkness writhes, displeased, and for a brief moment Zarkon can see it. It is not the Black Lion - it is not welcome. It is not safe-
The building panic bleeds away, and the echo of a man forgets. He forgets everything, his eyes closing as if to sleep. But then he speaks, and awareness surges back, a burning light grounding his shattered echoes in the present.
His brow furrows, his questions dying on his lips; he was about to ask where they were. He had already asked that. Where were they?
Zarkon looks down, his movements almost in slow motion, a trail or blurred and faded light following each one. He looks at his own hands, brow furrowing once more in confusion. Are they his? His claws look…wrong. But they are his.
“Į don’t u̡ ̢n d҉ ͘e͜ ̕r̶ sţan̡d.” His eyes lift to look upon Alfor once more. Something is…off about his dear friend. There is a glow, a lack of solidity. There is- a writhing over his shoulder, and Zarkon struggles to hold on to Alfor’s words, to make sense of this.
He is so…. t͝ ͘i͞ r ҉e͡ ͝ḑ.
