Introduction

Hey, my name is Patrice Elise Earle, and I’m a microtonal composer based in New Jersey.

I am starting this blog to document my writing processes of theory & composition, programming & production in the area of microtonality. This is an expansion of my academic research in music theory. For reference, my graduate thesis was Neutral Tonality: Theoretical and Compositional Analysis of the 24-tone System (2014), and my undergraduate senior thesis was Quartan: Theoretical Analysis of Triadic Quartal Harmony in the 12-tone System (2008). With a background in electronic music and a formal education in classical music, my work tries to meld these genres into music that can be performed by acoustic instruments as well as electronic instruments. I program using my Max for Live devices Micron Piano and Micron Distortion; the former of which retunes piano samples in an n-tone system with a variable tuning pitch, and the latter exponentiates that signal to create distortion. My latest album ‘Autumntide’ for solo piano explores tonality in the 19-tone EDO tuning system, and its supplemental remix album ‘Harvestide’ for distorted piano explores the resonance of different tuning systems.

I will be sharing my thoughts and ideas about set theory, tuning systems, harmonic resonance, and more, with a focus on their practical application.
