Around the time I (an eventual transsexual, to the surprise of none) turned 18 a bunch of the old dudes I knew would try to give me "life advice" all like "Here's what a Young Man(tm) needs to know before embarking upon the perilous journey to adulthood" and then they'd say just the most insane shit. Like "You have to be very careful because the world is full of malicious underage girls who'll try to trick you into having sex with them so you'll get in trouble" or "You should just go ahead and break up with your partner now before you leave town because once you're away you'll be helpless to stop the shadow legions of beautiful single women from tricking you into having sex with them, it's basically inevitable." And I'd be like "Boss, I don't think those are real scenarios that happen to people that often, I think you individually might just be a rotten son of a bitch" and the old dude would shake his head in gentle, paternal rebuke and be like "Ah, you poor, untested ingenue, you only think that because you haven't seen The Real World(tm) yet"

i read ashley's post about Logan's stagnancy and had a lot of thoughts about it / adjacent to it that I felt bad tacking them All onto her post so that's what this post is for. I reccomend reading ashley's post first just for potential context but also it's a good post that raises fair concerns.

she briefly touched on some things regarding Logan & Orange that I do feel Some Type Of Way About, because before we got more Orange hints & implied connections with Logan, it was generally well-known he was the least popular side (I mean, it even gets mentioned as an insult point-blank in an episode).

I'm not saying people only care about Logan because of Orange, or pulling any lame "new fans aren't Real Logan fans" bullshit. But I feel like there is something to be said about the fact that IMO, 50% of current fans who place Logan as their favourite side didn't feel that way before SvS Redux, WTIT, etc. And some of that's natural, because Logan's had some great moments since then, and also like god forbid people's faves change over time, but idk. I feel like people are way too enamoured by what could be going on regarding Logan & Orange than actually caring about Logan as his own character, without realizing. This isn't helped by the fact that a majority of the fanart I see for him nowadays is either explicitly about their connection, or alluding to it in some way (ei Normal ass fanart but Logan will have orange incorporated into his design). which again, not bad! just interesting to me.

it's like Logan currently can't exist as his own character even in the fandom, because of the looming presence of Orange. even character moments that should be big or at the Very least notable for Logan as we lead to his next arc are not only overshadowed by Orange's presence, but sometimes explicitly 'written away' from Logan by fans. I've seen lots of people theorize that Logan's outburst in WTIT wasn't Logan at all, and was just Orange speaking through Logan. Which is fine as a theory, but it takes away Logan's agency and some of his first more obvious less-static moments towards the end of the season.

& none of this is an attack on fellow fans, I'm not trying to invalidate anybody's Logan-fan status. Even if this is true & a lot of people jump ship to a new favourite side once we get Orange properly revealed, that's cool, and I'm glad to at least be Logan-stans-in-arms rn. it's just like. confusing for me to witness as somebody who's favourite side has Always been Logan, and as somebody who pretty regularly seems to disagree with/think differently from the majority of the fandom. I already have a Lot of thoughts about the current fandom's acceptance of how intertwined Logan & Orange are despite all of this Being Theories And Not Canon Yet but that's for a wholeeee other post.

The thing about Logan is

Love the guy a lot, he’s my special fella and all that

But, don’t get me wrong he has some great episodes like, the role he plays and such in DWIT and healthy distraction? That’s like Logan at peak yk, he’s exposition sure but he’s helpful and patient and listened to and he gets to fulfill his role as logic for Thomas by helping him better understand himself and the world around him.

However, most of the- he feels really stagnant as a character. A lot of the characters I feel like have gotten to truly grow and have character arcs that feel meaningful to their traits and roles for thomas. The arc should feel about them and their character. But Logan really mostly gets to only have two roles: exposition (moreso this one) and antagonistic force. And that hasn’t changed for a majority of the series, through s1 and s2.

I won’t go on about how I feel like how if he was more connected to his ‘role’ as a teacher like how roman being a ‘prince’ and Patton being a ‘dad’ helps make them more defined and interesting cause I’ve already done that rant before- but it would help!!! I’m just saying :3

I know I’m biased here cause I don’t care much for the Logan and Orange stuff as I feel like it’s more centered around discussion of Orange and that mystery and building hype for that instead of focusing on Logan. Because the issue of ‘Logan not being listened to’ he’s listened to all the time shsjsjd like DWIT and healthy distractions those episodes conflicts are resolved because the sides and Thomas listened to Logan. It’s only been more of a recent problem/conflict Logan specifically has had that got popped into the writing of the series I feel like. We as the viewer may believe it’s been something Logan’s been dealing with for a while as in our world- the time between episodes has been long yk. So to us it feels like oh Logan’s been dealing with this for years! Since WTIT was like what in 2021? So it feels like a long time! But in canon universe, and obviously we don’t know where the series currently takes place timeline wise- (I could do a whole post about the timeline it gets so messy but I won’t lol) but in canon, it hasn’t been that long of an issue Logan has been dealing with. There’s alot more episodes where he’s listened to than he hasn’t. It’s an issue that’s alot more recent at being center stage than one may think is my uhhh point.

I just wish he’d develop more as an Individual character, like don’t get me wrong at the end of the day they are all personality traits of one guy (like can a side grow unless Thomas works on that trait within himself? That is the questionnnn). They aren’t full human beings who can have fully realized personalities. But I want to see Logan, idk, change for the better in atleast some regards. Let him learn the lesson in LNTAO that working together or there’s merit in other teaching methods! And let that lesson STICK! Continuity! Not just a one off. I would love to see maybe Logan growing as a character by having more respect for Patton, I think that would be really good for showing change within himself as Logan has always been kinda mean or disregarding of Patton throughout the whole series lol. (I say that with love, I love both Logan and Patton but Logan is consistently not the nicest to bro lol)

When I think of the other sides (excluding Remus which I get why, because he hasn’t been here that long in the story technically and also his narrative presence in the story for Thomas doesn’t really require currently him having like some arc of growth etc.) Roman, Virgil, Patton and Janus- they’ve gotten to have some growth or positive change that’s consistent (or consistently built upon) or focused on in episodes throughout the series. Maybe an arc or visible change! With Logan, what positive change that’s been impactful for his character can you think of that’s happened throughout the series as his character has continued in the plot? A trait that he got from learning a lesson or an experience not necessarily something he had like already. Iiiiii am blanking honestly lol like we can have him having a nice moment with a side at the end of an episode but how much does that matter if it doesn’t really impact his character-

Uhhh what’s my point, I like Logan, I just wish his character got to be more fully realized and more developed past exposition guy. I feel bad being kinda negative in regards to him cause yk my fav but it just kinda makes me sad that i think he has a lot of cool character potential that isn’t really touched upon imo? Uhhh anyway he’s my special fella :3 idk this is a ramble and it’s 5 am so idk how much this makes sense
