Rentboy – Pawel Jaskulski (2013)
Rentboy is a preliminary study of a forthcoming photographic series inspired by the French anthropologist Marc Augé’s notion of the “non-place,” as those liminal sites and points of transit such as waiting rooms, airports, hotels and motorways which increasingly characterise the contemporary, late-capitalist experience of space. Jaskulski identifies what he sees as a particularly mobile social group, that of young gay men in Europe, asking each of his subjects what personal items they would never part with which he then photographs. His series investigates the current possibilities of recovering the social and relational dimension of space, engaging the tradition of portrait photography for its direct physical relationship to his subject and to capture a moment of their personal history - resulting in documents of transitory identities.
