Although this species is typically green and yellow, a condition known as erythrism is relatively common. Erythrism is a genetic condition that causes an excessive amount of red pigments or lack of non-red pigments in animals. In grasshoppers and katydids, it’s possible this is an adaptation to help camouflage among red or pink flowers and foliage. However, individuals with erythrism often have difficulty camouflaging themselves in more common green foliage and are eaten by predators before they make it to adulthood.
