Spirit work
What I say: Yeah, I do spirit work.
What I mean: I haven't talked to a spirit in four months because I'm too lazy to clean my room.
Update
My mental health and my schedule has become completely non-accomodating to running the shop anymore. Ā I took the time this morning to refund all outstanding orders that I have never touched. Ā Some of them were from an embarrassingly long time ago - I apologize to those of you who were negatively affected by my poor performance.
That being said, I have two ordersĀ - one from January and one from February - that were for receiving a spiritās vessel that I had already spoken to them about. Those orders will be honored and Iāll try to get them both done sometime in the next week.
While it lasted, it was a really great time and I felt like I made a huge difference for a lot of people! Ā But this chapter of my life now has to close. Ā Iāve been pushed by my Netjeru Fathers to pick myself up, do the refunds, and get this overwith. Ā I think now that Iāve done this, Iāll feel a lot more free and a lot less anxious.
Itās kind of funny - I sometimes wonder if I was cursed by a handful of customers who were particularly nasty to me back in the summer, but that just feels ridiculous. Ā Itās myself I have to hold accountable, and I am holding myself accountable. Ā I let myself become overwhelmed and I became the shop keeper I never wanted to be - someone who wouldnāt respond to emails, messages, etc. Ā I have a crippling anxiety attack whenever I look at my thedragonslibrary email, whenever I log on to storenvy, whenever I log on to tumblr. Ā Sometimes the feeling lasts for days. Ā I donāt want to have that feeling anymore, so this is something I have to do.
I am permanently closing The Dragons Library until further notice. Ā Maybe one day Iāll want to do it again, but today is not that day.
Thanks for your continued patience and support! Ā
I'm sorry to see you go. I wish things had turned out better, but I understand the need to care for yourself and your mental health. I hope things get better for you from here forward.
I sent you a message on Storenvy about an order I had on August 23rd that doesn't seem to have been refunded. I apologise for making it this visible, but I'm not sure what the best venue to contact you for that is, that's why I'm doing it in the reblogs here.
if someone does theĀ āfine, youāre right, iām clearlyĀ a terrible person, iām satan, iām the worst person alive, i should just dieā thing in response to criticism of their harmful behavior, they are trying to manipulate ppl and flip the situation around so that they look like a victim
stop tolerating this in 2k17 tbh. like really and truly, if you or your friend thinks this is okay pls call the hotline on the bottom of the screen and learn how to take responsibility for your bad behaviorĀ
The bad thing is I do this on a regular basis. Not because I want to manipulate people, but because thatās actually how I feel. Iām bad at receiving concrit. I canāt say that everyone who reacts this way feels the same as I do, butā¦not every case is like that.
have you considered that, regardless of your intentions, reacting in such an exaggerated way would make it very difficult for anyone to criticize you or tell you that youāre harming people with your behavior? iām not interested in searching out peopleās motives, i donāt really care whyĀ someone does or says manipulative things. being unable or unwilling to simply apologize and notĀ make it about themselves is a solid indicator that a person is not interested in being held accountable for their bad behavior, and people, especially the injured parties in question, shouldnāt have to tolerate it.
take responsibility for your bad behavior 2k17 tbh
Okay, life lesson time.Ā
When I was in my late teens and early 20s, I kept getting involved with people who would say,Ā āOh, Iām a bad personā any time I brought up ANYTHING that was the least bit of a disagreement.Ā
Like,Ā āPlease donāt leave my X on the floorā would get,Ā āOh, Iām a horrible person!ā
HEREāS WHY THIS IS A HUGELY PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIOR, and if you think Iām calling you out and you think youāre about to shut down, take a breath, remember that this is about learning, and keep reading.
What is important is what happened after. My boyfriend might say,Ā āOh, Iām just an awful boyfriendā and instead of him acknowledging the BEHAVIOR and working on fixing it, heād get me trying to buck him up for the next half hour, telling him he was a good person. The behavior that started it all would not change.
Well, things led to things and I went back home to live for a while, and found that the same exact thing was happening⦠with my mother.
And then I learned about pattern arguments. Pattern arguments are the ones where you keep having the same nonproductive argument over and over again. They donāt all follow this pattern, but this is a really common one.
The trick?
BREAK THE PATTERN
First you have to know what the pattern is. In this case: 1. Grievance 2. Self deprecation 3. Ego stroking So, with my mother, we started in on one of these, and she said,Ā āI guess Iām just a terrible mother.ā And instead of reassuring her, instead of derailing the issue and letting it go⦠I said,Ā āWhen you say that, it makes me wonder how terrible a daughter I could be that you would think you were a bad mother. We have this conversation this way over and over, and the problem that I have always gets pushed aside in favor of trying to make you feel better. When youāre willing to have a real conversation about this, Iām happy to talk to you, but Iām bored with this argument, so Iāll see you later if you want to really talk.ā And I left the room. Now, my mom is a reasonably self-aware person, and does a lot of hard emotional work, and so she got it, very quickly. 10 minutes later she came out and found me, and we had a real conversation about whatever the hell the issue really was, and we have literally NEVER had that particular pattern argument again in 23 years.Ā Boyfriend came to visit. I was upset about something, he started in on theĀ āIām just a shitty boyfriendā thing⦠and my response? āYep. You are.ā His jaw dropped. He blinked. And I said,Ā āLook, thatās what you do. You say shit like that and it means you donāt have to change your behavior, and Iām tired of the pattern we have where I tell you something isnāt working for me, you tell me youāre terrible, and I spend half an hour making you feel better. Iām tired of it and Iām not doing it anymore. If youāre willing to have an actual conversation about this, and not just the same old argument, Iām game. But this thing we do where you talk yourself down and I butter you up? Is boring. And Iām over it.ā We also did not have that argument again. (The relationship finally ended for real a while after, but it ended in a grown-up way, and not with a ridiculous meaningless fight.) When you knock yourself down, the gut instinct for the people around you is to pick you up. But that means youāre not pulling your weight in the relationship. Youāre making them do the work and youāre not actually hearing them. So that brings us to another point:
How to deal with criticism
Okay, so if youāre not going to knock yourself down when someone says something negative about you, what DO you do? We donāt actually train people to take criticism well. But it is an art and a skill and NECESSARY to finding emotional stability in the face of a critical world.
I see it as a flow chart, but since the flow chart I made for it ended up in a book that I donāt own the copyright to (not a big deal) Iāll write out the decision tree here instead: 1. Someone offers criticism (constructive or not!)
2. Listen and think about it without immediately trying to defend yourself. You can say,Ā āOkay, I need a moment to take that in and think about it because I want to understand it.ā Or something else appropriate to the situation. It is okay to ask for time to think in most circumstances. Most people will appreciate that you are thinking about their words instead of immediately getting defensive or counterattacking. Think about whether what they are saying is valid, might be valid or is not valid.Ā
3A. If it is valid, then you have a choice. You can try to fix the behavior or you can acknowledge that it is a valid criticism but decide you arenāt likely to fix it. Start by acknowledging the validity of the criticism, and then say what youāre going to do to fix it, or say that itās valid but it isnāt something youāre willing (or possibly able) to change, or say that itās a valid criticism and youāll need to think about possible solutions. They may have a suggestion. Taking it or not is also a choice.Ā
3B. If youāre not sure itās valid, but it might be, tell them,Ā āI really need to give this some more thought.ā orĀ āCan you tell me more about this? Iām not sure I understand the issue well.ā Ā OrĀ āIf you can point me at some reading material or search terms, Iād like to study this before I decide what Iām going to do.āĀ
3C. If you know it is not a valid criticism, STOP a moment, and look at WHY they are making it. This is where Active Listening can be very helpful.Ā āI hear you saying that X is a problem. I donāt see it that way right now but Iād like to understand better why you do.ā Or if you think they donāt have enough information,Ā āI hear you saying X, but my understanding of the issue is Y. Hereās what I know about it if youāre ready to listen.ā If theyāre just looking for a fight, tell them youāre not interested in fighting, and disentangle yourself.Ā
4. If the criticism is something you are going to listen to and take action on, tell them what kind of action youāre going to take. If itās something youāre hearing and thinking about, tell them that. If itās not something youāre going to do anything about or itās just wrong, thank them for their input and move on.
Literally never is it going to be helpful to say,Ā āOh, Iām just a terrible person.ā Thatās very much like a nonapology-apology in terms of how unhelpful it is to any conversation. Itās kind of worse because it actually expects emotional labor from someone who is already having to bring up something unpleasant with you. Think about what they say Decide whether youāre going to do something about it Do the thing, or tell them youāre not going to do the thing.Ā Donāt demand emotional labor from other people when you were the one who messed up.Ā
Apologize if appropriate.Ā This is all predicated on the notion that youāre talking to someone who actually wants to communicate and isnāt just an asshole on the attack.Ā Because seriously, the wholeĀ āIām a terrible personā thing?Ā Boring as fuck. Knock that shit off. Maybe you are. Maybe you arenāt. But take responsibility and have a little self-respect and donāt make others pick your emotional dirty towels off the metaphorical bathroom floor.Ā
Just because you arenāt trying to be problematic doesnāt mean your behavior isnāt.Ā
āI didnāt do it on purpose/with that intentā doesnāt change that you did it.Ā
I watch someone who lost a lot of people because of things they did just like this, instead of ever owning up they continue to demonize the people who walked out of their life.Ā
Just wondering but has anyone heard *anything* from The Dragon's Library since October?
I have several items for sale. The first two are of an ethically sourced mink skull hair clip complete with faux red flowers. Never Used. Asking $25 + S&H (Payment methods and Payment plans negotiable) ā Second is a pair of earrings found, they are sterilized but could use some polishing. $5 + S&H ā Third row is my prototype fairy house made of polymer clay and acrylic paint. Asking $45 + S&H (Price Negotiable) ā Pictured is a stone and two beads. I am unsure what sort of stone the pendant is. I will sell them all 3 for $10 + S&H. (Message if you wish to negotiate a price per individual item. The pendant will come with the white stone) ā Used hanging chain necklace with spike ends. The spikes have white rhinestones in them. Very lovely to wear. Asking $15 + S&H. ā The final image is a repeat as a placeholder image. Contact me through @littlecornercreature or @improvwitch on tumblr. Ask box is always open as is messenger.Ā
Alright. Iāve tried several other avenues of action here, and I canāt seem to come up with a better way to do this. Iām trying to rehome this spirit from EA. To avoid any further drama - I am aware EA claims to do rehoming/adoption, but due to past accounts of rehoming through them leading to spirits disappearing or being mismatched, I thought it best not to send him back to them. He has also explicitly said to me not to associate him with them, so I think he would prefer not to go back as well. He and I have talked and are parting ways on good terms, so there shouldnāt be any conflict relating to the time we spent together that his new keeper should worry about. If EA would like to personally talk to me about any of this, I have not blocked them, so they are welcome to contact me.
Now that all of thatās aside, letās talk about him:
He wishes to be called Tristan but his true name will be given once he forges a bond with a keeper. He is an Astriferous Dragon - a type of dragon that can shape realms and planes. His age does not translate well into time that humans can comprehend, but he feels very old, filled with quiet wisdom that he prefers to communicate via demonstration over words. He watches over a newer, chaotic plane of the astral and wishes to teach a student to how to astral travel effectively and eventually how to shape the astral to their will. He is a serious, stern teacher, yet patient and understanding when needed, and asks that his student be very serious about their practice as well. He does not request offerings other than his student's time and dedication. In appearance, he is a shifting, translucent dark blue-grey color - the color of the underside of a storm cloud and very large. He is solidly built with a broad chest and powerful wings. He is grey natured - he will not start conflict but will not hold back if confronted. He is being rehomed due to a mismatch of his personality and ideals, not through any fault of his own.
If you are interested in providing a new home for Tristan, please send me an ask or a Tumblr message and we can talk about it. Iāll be running all potential companions by him, so a little about yourself and why youāre interested in him will be helpful. As for the cost, Iām asking $10, shipping included, but Iām willing to discuss alternate forms of payment or negotiate if a good match is made.
Unpopular Opinion about Cultural Appropriation in the Spirit Keeping Community
So hereās a popular belief: We should not work with spirits that are not a part of our own culture. Okay⦠I can understand that to an extent. Some cultures are very sacred, and we Americans are trademarked as being brash and⦠kind of unappreciative of what we have. But listen. Hereās the unpopular side.
We arenāt forbidden from working with spirits of other cultures. Am I forbidden for working with the Aztec goddess Xochiquetzal because Iām a Caucasian American? No, Iām not. After a year of enlightening work and meditation with her, I never felt like she was angry that I worked with her. In fact I felt that she was calling as my matron for some time before I even knew who she was. I work with many different culture spirits, and hereāre my thoughts: Cultural appropriation is really, really silly when it comes to the spirit world. Yes, itās important for you to understand other cultures depending on what spirits youāre working with because you donāt want to offend them by giving them the wrong kind of offering or performing the wrong kind of ritual, but if you have the spiritās permission to work with them, whatās the big deal? Besides, many of us have had past lives from different cultures, and we like to connect to our past life soulmates and previous friends. Cutting off ties with certain spirits because of their culture is not cultural appropriation IMO. Itās racism. Itās being SO careful about who you offend that youāre actually offending the spirit youāre trying NOT to. I hope that makes sense. Youāre being overly careful here. If you call on a spirit and they say,Ā āI donāt want to work with you because youāre a _____,ā then thank them for their time and say goodbye. And DONāT WORK WITH THEM.
But if the spirit in question is completely fine with working with you, I think you would be doing DAMAGE to your relationship with them and offending them more if you said,Ā āI canāt work with you because Iām a ______ and not a _______ of your culture.ā
Iāve had Arab Djinn approach me in the past. Japanese Tanuki and Kitsune, Catholic Saints, Germanic Alps, Romanian Vampires, and Greek god messengers. I accept them all as friends or mentors, and I appreciate and respect their cultures. Unlike the popular opinion on Americans, I donāt take, take, take. I accept the spirit, appreciate their culture, and respect them.
ā¦Iām gonna get so much hate for this. I just know it.
~Lu
So like. I tried to walk away from this, but I really wanted to say some things about the content here.
First is that your spirit list at the bottom is pretty, uh, open, actually. Most of those beings you listed are from open cultures, and so they wouldnāt be an issue to work with, so long as youāre being respectful about it.
So⦠yeah.
Second is that I feel like a lot of spirit workers who come from the topic of cultural appropriation from this angle forget a few very particular caveats about all of this.
The first is: How often do you think beings from Closed Cultures come bothering foreigners for attention?Ā (bolding for ease of reading)
I will admit that it probably happens on occasion. But I donāt think it happens nearly as much as a lot of people think it does. Itās like every white person saying theyāre part Cherokee Princess, or how every Kemetic group I follow probably has at least one reincarnated Egyptian priest or phoaraoh every month (this is not even an exaggeration).
A lot of people have rubbish discernment, and I honestly donāt think that very many gods from Closed Cultures are running around tapping foreigners for attention. So I mean, that throws a kink in all of this.
But letās just say for the sake of argument that Mr. McWhitey did in fact hear from a spirit from a Closed Cultureā¦.
The second is: You do realize that you can access Closed Cultures (sometimes, usually) if you go through proper channels, yes?
If Mr. McWhitey actually is hearing from a spirit from a Closed Culture, itās very possible that he could gain access to things if he went through the proper channels. That means going and doing research, reaching out to actual members of the community, and learning through them. Getting permission to learn through them. Being respectful to the culture (and therefore the spirit) and earning the privilege to participate in the spirit work at hand.
Because honestly, if you donāt respect the spirit and itās surrounding culture enough to do this, you donāt deserve the honor. Itās great to see how many Cherokee Princesses we have running around, and yet none of said Cherokee Princesses actually engage with modern Cherokee people living in the here and now. They donāt bother to support the culture as it exists now, but want to have full dibs of getting their hands all over their religious practices⦠or should I say, their bastardized ideas of what their religious/spirit worker practices entail.
Thatās where the crux of this lies, you see. Cultural Appropriation is less about picking cultures that āarenāt yoursā, and is more about taking things without permission and utilizing it for your own means simply because you can. Itās about power imbalances, where (to use an easy example) modern Native Americans are being forced to cut their hair because our dominant, European-influenced culture has deemed it Wrong and Inappropriate. And yet Mr. McWhitey can go and take whatever he wants because he happens to be from the dominant culture? Naw brah, thatās bullshit.
The third is: People are more important than non-physical beings, and you donāt understand what racism is.
The biggest thing I want to reinforce about all of this, however, is that people are inherently more important than non-physical beings. Non-physical beings canāt be proven to exist 10000%. They just canāt. But you know who can be prove to exist? Physical humans and beings that live here on this punishment orb planet with you. And honestly, anyone with any logic should be able to understand that we should be more vested in protecting the actual beings on this planet, you know, the ones we can prove that exist, than worrying about a spirit that might be from a Closed Culture coming to call (if they come to call at all).
In my last point, I brought up that Cultural Appropriation is about power imbalances, and thatās worth repeating, because you see, the problem with pulling spirits and gods that arenāt from your original culture, and not going through the proper channels to be able to properly worship those beings is that you end up dicking over the very people that live here with you.
When foreigners steal things without permission, youāre reinforcing a system of oppression. This system invalidates peopleās existences and cultures, and renders them down into property or items. It devalues them. And when you decide not to do the hard work (which can involve being told āno, you canāt touch this even if you try to do the workā), and you decide that youāre better than the culture youāre supposedly respecting and ignore their wishes, youāre reinforcing these systems of oppression.
Thatās why itās a problem.
Further, walking away from a spirit who has supposedly asked you to do teh Hard Work in order to form a relationship is not racism.
I donāt know what definition of racism youāre using, but itās not very accurate. Racism is a systematic problem. Itās an institution that is hardwired into the framework of a society, and is meant to oppress people.
And lo! if you read the paragraphs above this, youād see that participating in Cultural Appropriation can, in fact, reinforce racism. Because youāre feeding that system of oppression by participating in it.
So actually, walking away is not racist. If anything, itās responsible.
If youād actually like to learn about cultural appropriation, I have a tag where I store that stuff.
things to remember: short responses or no responses are usually due to low mood and intolerance for socializing. not because they hate you and would rather you disappear.
So I have another rehome but... since its a fairly complicated situation, I'd like to work with a conjuror, or at least someone very experienced about it, privately. Message me if you're open to discussing it.
Protection Methods
A few of my personal methods, and by no means a complete list.
Salt, rosemary, and water wash. Combine salt, rosemary, and water into a large bowl. Visualize protective and cleansing energies entering the bowl. Be specific in what you want to be protected from. Use the wash around your home, especially doorways and windows. Create protective sigils using the wash, if you wish.
Chalk sigils. Draw them on the foundation of your house, sidewalks, underneath floorboards, or in the walls if youāre remodeling your home.
Wards. Used to defend against specific things, and keep them away. ~ Hex signs - circular painted symbols. Different patterns and colors have different meanings, but you can always create your own. ~ Spider houses - specific spaces designated for spiders to live to keep away insects and other creatures that are pests or feed off of energy. I use rocks, boxes, and small flower pots, and draw protective sigils on them. ~ Alerts - sound makers hung outside of the home. They alert you of possible harm, and defend against it. Chimes can be purposed to do this. You can also create your own using various items, such as string, wire, beads, shells, bells, anything you can think of that makes noise.
Witch Ball. Clear balls hung up around the home to capture harmful energy, that can be cleansed.
Witch Jar. Jar filled with broken glass, nails, pins, and whatever you feel will protect you. Seal it with wax and bury it in your yard.
Charm bags. Bags filled with protective herbs and items. If you donāt have sachets or fabric, you can use a coffee filter or paper and string or ribbon. Hang them around the house, in a vehicle, or even carry one with you.
Amulets. An item worn, usually jewelry, purposed to protect you from specific harms, such as illness, jealousy, or unwanted spirits.
Glamours. Glamours are intended to make others see you how you want to be seen, or not seen. They can be as simple as a chant, āI will travel unnoticed,ā āI will blend in with my surroundings,ā āOthers will not see me.ā Focus on this energy, and push it out of you to create a barrier.
Energy Shield. Choose an element that you feel connected to, and visualize it creating a protective shield around you. For instance, you might visualize yourself surrounded by fire, waves, lightning storms, or tornadoes.
Protection Candle. Charge a candle with protective energy. Visualize the energy as an egg, growing around the candle, yourself, and your home. Light the candle any time you feel you need added protection.
Ask for help. If you work with spirits, ask them if theyāre willing to help protect you.
Pst Ruin smells like a dog in the astral pass it on :V <3
At least Iām not covered in mucus, frogface. >:V
Iām going to be at Flame Con this weekend with @angrygirlcomics in Brooklyn!
If youāre around, I hope you stop by! Iām bringing this collection of small prints, along with a few more.
Quick heads up that I'm working a long shift today, so if anyone submits anything about Illo, I probably won't get to respond until lateish tonight. Sorry for the delay!
Hey, everyone! I've had some personal stuff going on and after talking with my spirit family, we thought it might be good for both of us if some of them moved on. I'm still working with them to be sure of the way they'd like to go about it, but one of them so far has said that he would be fine with being rehomed.
So, this is Illo, a Dream Sender Psy Vampire from the (now closed) Citrine Stars. I mention the conjuror because I know several people (myself included) have had trouble connecting with some of her bindings. Illo seems to be an exception - his energy is quite strong to me when he's present. Still, I would suggest that because of the potential difficulties, he might not be the best as a first companion for a newbie. Here is the description given for Psy Vampires from the CS website:
"Dream Sender Psy Vampires are an amazing group of Vampire spirits. Ā In life they would use the dreams of humans as a means to receive the energy they needed to survive. Ā This was considered a form of attack as they entered into a sleeping human's dreams, absorbing their energy and generally leaving them feeling tired the next day. However as spirits they do not have the same energy requirements, and their prowess with dream work is used on their keeper's behalf to further their spiritual progress and introduce new forms of dream work, journeying and other amazing abilities like Dream Sharing. Ā They are absolutely 100% safe to keep in spirit form, they are devoted, loyal and protective of their keeper and will never draw energy from you, your family, your friends, your pets (etc). Ā Each of these vampires can help you with lucid dreaming, dream recall, visiting past present or future in dreams as well as help you connect with others who are also dreaming. Ā They tend to be a little on the whimsical side, very spiritual in nature and extremely kind and gentle. Ā Some of them speak in riddles while others are more direct, but one thing is for certain, each one is an amazing companion, a terrific friend and truly a wonderful guide on your journey."
I will say that I have not actually had the described effects on my dreams listed above, however to be completely fair to him, I seem to have some blocks in communicating with spirits via non-lucid dreams anyway. But he has come to me at times where I've had trouble sleeping and helped me to relax and rest, so I think he would be a good match for someone who suffers from anxiety or insomnia. He seems to be more active at night than during the day.Ā He's rather quiet and rarely talks but when he does his voice is low, soothing and deeper than you'd think.Ā His energy feels like a big dark blanket wrapping around you, which can be a little overwhelming but I personally find it calming. Heās very physically affectionate -Ā manifesting as touches and cuddles, like holding hands or an arm drawn around your shoulders.Ā I've found him to be gentle, patient, and diplomatic. He's fine with a romantic relationship with his companion or just a friendly one.
In appearance, he is a tall, slim man (looking to be in his mid 20s) with pale skin and blue-green eyes the same color as his vessel. His hair is long and black with a couple of blue streaks, usually pulled back in a ponytail. Ā His features are on the sharp side but not to the point of being severe, and he often wears simple but dressy clothing (silk shirts, dark slacks). For offerings, he seems to like lavender scented things (candles, perfumes), feathers, fires in a fireplace, labradorite, and dark blue/indigo colored things.
If you are interested in providing a new home for Illo, please send me an ask or a Tumblr message and we can talk about it. I'll be running all potential companions by him, so a little about yourself and why you're interested in him will be helpful. As for the cost, I'm asking $20, shipping included, but I'm willing to discuss alternate forms of payment or negotiate if a good match is made.
New home has been found!
What do you think of the Dragon's Library?
Itās honestly my favorite shop. :> I may be biased because I consider Kaitie a friend, but even before that, I had one the strongest callings Iāve ever felt from a mermaid in her shop and I absolutely adore her. Sheās such a joy to have around and has helped me out in several situations. Even the quieter spirits Iāve gotten from her are easy for me to sense and are very sweet. I think Kaitie does a good job finding a diverse variety of spirits that are still safe to anyone to work with. She works very hard to ensure a good match between spirit and companion and, once there is a match, sheās also good for working with the person to make it affordable.Ā
About the only thing I could complain about is that she can be hard to contact/slow to reply to messages and such due to high workload. I understand if people are frustrated with her in that sense, but running a one person shop while also attending college canāt be easy and I think her spirits are genuinely worth the wait, haha. And I guess it is a bummer that she doesnāt offer customs at this time but I personally prefer just browsing for prebounds, myself, ehe.Ā
