Tips From a College Student Part Four
1.Choose Wisely When You Skip Class. I get it, we all get it, there are days where you just can’t, don’t, or won’t go to school. And I completely get it. And it college it’s alot easier to skip because you don’t have nagging parents telling you you have to go, you can just turn off your alarms and sleep in, but lemme tell you, that’s okay to do sometimes. So I’m taking a six week course and in our school they’re only allowed to excuse you up to five days. For me, I usually end up using all that up at once and I feel guilty as hell because I missed so much class and now my grades are tanked. And that’s why I’m here, giving you the advice I needed to hear before starting but never got. So if you’re going to skip class, do one day a week, make sure you aren’t missing anything huge, and make sure it’s a day you really needed off. Or make sure you get a doctor’s note if you’re sick.
2. Get to know your teachers. This is a tip better used for smaller and community colleges, this will work to your advantage. If you need a grade rounded up or need to get leniency about something it’s more likely to gain sympathy if you and the teacher have a bond of some sort. My history teacher and I have three things we discuss all the time: Star Wars franchise, Florida Man articles, and new war films. You know how much extra credit I get for wearing a Star Wars shirt to class??? It will help your grade extradordinarily if you’re chill with the teacher. Just trust me on this.
3. You’re going to learn more from a B class than an A class. This is something one of my instructors talked about in an earlier cycle. How he took a class because he thought it was going to be easy (it wasn’t, it was actually harder than some of the normal hard classes). And he talked about how they did more work for this class and most of his friends got a C- at the most, while he got a solid B. While yeah that class affected his GPA, but that wasn’t what he cared about. He learned a lot more about life and education from there than anywhere else.
4. Sometimes You Just Have to Accept That You’ll Fail a Class. Guys, it’s not the end of the world if you fail a class, or two, or even four. It’s not the end of the world. Things happen: mental health gets in the way, you don’t put enough work into your class, or you just have a bad teacher. You gotta accept that you’ll have that F on your transcript. If you think it’s going to affect how your job offers are, lemme tell you something. If they see your transcript that your grade went from an F to something like a B, they’ll see that and take that you’re willing to work hard to fix your problems and you’re a hard worker and that you’re willing to change. It’s okay to have an F. I’m waiting to take a class again because I failed hard and the teacher knows I’m coming back, he’s actually really glad that I’m willing to do it even though I don’t have to. Hell, I’m taking another of his classes until it comes up. It’s a show of good faith that you’re willing to work for you grade. It’s okay to fail something, that’s how humans learn.
Okay lovelies, I’ll see you soon for another part. Bye!
