💫 SUMMER BEDTIME 💫

🐞 getting to stay up a bit longer because the sun sets so much later - it's still not fully dark outside when you go to bed and you see golden puddles of light under your curtains

☁️ "aww, someone's tired, hm? you've had a really long day, little one - soaked up all that sun!! look at that yawn, we better get you to bed... bathtime first, sunshine, you've been playing outside all day! now, how about i start running the water and you tell me all about what you did today?"

🍒 sleeping in lighter clothes, topless or in underwear - feeling the cool sheets and a summer breeze from the open window on your skin and holding your stuffie close because that extra bit of warmth doesn't really matter, does it?

🌷 the sounds of summer lulling you to sleep: an ice-cream van on its last round around the neighbourhood, swifts, swallows and bats catching bugs high in the sky, people walking by talking and laughing, bikes rumbling over cobblestone...

🐇 reading or being read summery books for bedtime - stories about first trips to other places, horses, animal friends celebrating together, detectives solving cases of break-ins into swimming pools, road trips...

☘️ feeling the smile on your face as you drift off - knowing you'll get to have another wonderful day tomorrow!!

Kiddo who’s so used to taking care of themself. Making their own pasta, cutting off their own crusts, filling their own cup, putting bandaids on their own owies. Kiddo who spent so long taking care of themselves and self soothing they don’t know how to act with a carer now looking out for them. Instinct tells them self soothe, to be quiet and take care of it themselves.

Their carer finds them all the time, standing on a stool to stir pasta they’re making, muffling their cries with a teddy bear or cleaning up their own scraped knees. And carer is trying to be patient, rushes in and tries to take over so kiddo knows they’re not alone and they’re being taken care of now.

“I tan do it…”

“I know you can, button. But I wanna do it for you, okay? I like taking care of you.”

You’re not a bad a kid if

-you’re a picky eater

-you cry a lot

-you don’t regress like others do

-you have melt downs

- you go non speaking

-you have big feelings

-you can’t do something

-you have accidents

-you’re loud

-you’re clumsy

-you have trouble regulating your emotions

-you have scary thoughts

-you’re messy

You’re a good kid. You don’t have to have it all figured out or keep it together all the time. It’s okay to have big feelings, it’s okay to mess up, it’s okay to have thoughts that scare you when regressed. There’s nothing wrong with you, you’re not bad. It’s okay if your regression doesn’t look like their regression. You’re doing your best.

Be nice to your little self.

there's a big big difference between grace regressing to a toddler vs. a baby: toddler grace is constantly running around getting into everything, climbing trees and rocks, and absolutely wearing out his poor carers ("ERIDIANS NOT ENDURANCE HUNTERS. GRACE SLOW DOWN, COMMAND!!!" as rocky is booking it after grace who's been on a beach run for the past hour) whereas baby grace is nearly entirely stationary and very content to just be wherever rocky or adrian put him.

so when baby grace gets it in his head to start crawling, it's a whole thing.

crawling is a big big milestone for pebbles, just like for babies, so at first rocky is SO EXCITED. constantly humming praises, cheering grace on. but the thing is, rocky and adrian haven't had their own clutch yet. so they're a little less aware that crawling pebbles immediately invite chaos.

for all the trouble grace gets into in his toddler headspace, he at least has a loose sense of self-preservation. but baby grace suddenly has access to the whole biodome with zero impulse control. and like many babies, the best way to explore this whole new world is to Put Object In Mouth. it's adorable the first time; after the twentieth or so rock/pinecone/cluster of grass/handful of dirt rocky has taken from grace, it's mostly just harrowing.

adrian comes back to grace's home to visit to see the baby down for a nap and rocky absolutely exhausted.
