Radically Rethinking the Nonprofit Paradigm
The best time to plant a tree was a decade ago; the next best time to plant a tree is – today.

The Golden Gate Audubon Society has been doing some amazing work since its founding in 1917. The Society tends a five-acre wetlands restoration site by Pier 94 in San Francisco to serve as a refuge for birds like the American Avocet. At Pier 94, more than 200 volunteers restored 32 cubic yards, removing trash and weeds and replacing them with 100 native marsh plants.
The Society's Eco-Education program brings students to ecosystems right in their local neighborhoods. In 2012, 540 low-income students and their families visited Muir Beach and Alcatraz to observe bird colonies and learn how to care for watersheds and oceans. For half of the attendees, this was their first trip to an ocean!
The society is headquartered in Berkeley and has 5,000 paid members. Check out their site here!

Nature bridges are majestic beasts on borrowed time. We also love the nonprofit of the same name. Check them out. We'll be helping them soon. @pebbl
Pebbl, meet tumblr. Tumblr, meet pebbl.
We're creating Pebbl, a mobile community engagement platform that connects users with nearby causes and rewards them for donating.
We are on a mission to solve the fundraising woes of community nonprofits struggling with visibility and engagement within their community.
There are almost 2 million registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits in the US. 80% of those have total assets under $1M, and combined account for under 8% of the sector's total assets. 8%! This is hugely disproportionate.
Many nonprofits are struggling to survive, and are often forced to spend more of their resources trying to secure financing through limited grants or costly fundraisers than doing the good work they originally set out to do. Those fundraisers, like galas or golf tournaments, are surely fun but also costly. An average of 70% of the income generated from the event just covers the cost of holding the event in the first place! How much does Pebbl cost? Try 5%.
Pebbl is currently under development, but our beta should be released in several months. Until that time, we're going to use this stage to share our story, our mission and spotlight some of the incredible true stories of community nonprofits in our neighborhood.
Cheers!
