Papyrus found in the tomb of the scribe Hunefer in Thebes. It dates from the 19th Dynasty, about 1285 BC. It can be seen in the British Museum.

This is a famous scene from the Book of the Dead, chapter 125. It shows the soul of the deceased (Hunefer) being led to judgment by Anubis. A court of gods sits above. Hunefer’s heart is weighed on the scales on the left, against the feather of truth (maat) on the right. If Hunefer has been bad, then a strange monster called Ammut - that’s the creature with the crocodile’s head and hippo’s body - will devour him!

Ma’at is also known as the goddess of justice and truth. Her teachings can be compared to the conscience of a person. It’s reasonable to say that Ma’at’s teachings aided the people of Egypt into being good individuals. It was considered a crime against Ma’at if a person practiced jealousy, dishonesty, gluttony, laziness, injustice, and ungratefulness.

When a person died, their heart was weighed against the goddess’ feather on a huge scale. It was believed the heart was the sole substance of a person’s thoughts, emotions, and actions; in a sense it was thought to hold a person’s soul. If the person’s heart was filled with wrongful deeds and it was deemed heavier then the feather of Ma’at, the person’s heart would be destroyed and eaten by the demon Ammut. If this happened the deceased would suffer a nonexistent fate and would cease to exist.

This wooden figure represents the god Anubis with a canid head on a human body, wearing the feathered costume of Egyptian deities. In this pose—hands raised, palms downward—the god performed purification and transfiguration rites over a mummy. During the actual mummification process, a priest wearing a canid mask played the role of Anubis. (Source)
