I've always had a vague awareness of the Wings of Fire books because, duh, the kids always ask for them. But I'm browsing anticipated releases for 2026 to stay abreast and the dragons are in Australia? It might be time to actually read through these.

My Year of rest and relaxation

I have a new addition for my unlikable protagonist list.

Overall I liked it because as someone that's been on Trazadone for that great mix of insomnia and Depression, that is exactly what it felt like. That hazy space between my brain saying 'No' to sleep but the medicine doing its dang best to do its job. Asleep but not, awake but not, time skipping, hazy, deliciously lazy to atrophied in varying waves. I thought that the time setting might come into play more and suppose it did but didn't. Yes, 9/11 kind of loomed over the narrative like a Chekov's Gun game of Peek-a-boo, but it doesn't swallow the story. Which I liked and kind of didn't. Most importantly I liked the book not for its literal on-page story, but for what it made me think about. What WOULD be different if it took place in modern day? The protagonist wouldn't have to rely on VHS for looping entertainment anymore, we have streaming now, she could have an endless loop of background noise for the entirety of the year. We have delivery apps for EVERYTHING, she'd never have to visit the store and slog through tedious human interaction. She could truly bed rot for a year without consciously leaving the apartment. It made me think about money and privilege, not just the bottomless pit of finances that the protagonist had, but also the way she started her journey young and with no real disabilities. She could afford her year of checking out without consequences for real, compared to her 'friend' Reva who has to live with all the events of her year parallel to her. Hell, even Tyler has a year of development while the protagonist struggles to remain checked out. It made me think of the privilege of not having to care about the news or politics she kind of skims on the television in passing. The pretty privilege of rolling out of bed looking like shit but no one thinks anything of it whereas how she might've been treated if she was dressed slovenly but not beautiful on her outings. The privilege of having your parents die and not really have to deal with the funeral arrangements or clearing out their house because the childhood home, as banal and bland and hollow as it was, she can afford to hang on to even without stepping foot in it anymore. I wouldn't call it a FUN read, but I do think it was a meditative, kind of sometimes silly, read to get the brain moving and while I wouldn't call it life-affirming by the end it does inspire a sort of desperation to get off the couch and go feed some squirrels.

Heeey old freaky people/fandom elders

There's a fanfic I'm trying to find/identify and I am depending on the collective power of the hellsite as a last resort.

It was an Aziraphale/Crowley fic, and the only part I remember disproportionately well is Aziraphale reflecting on his deeds through the years and how there was a mathematician (?) in the desert that was on the verge of a big breakthrough but was losing faith and to kind of keep him encouraged he slept with him?

I think the fic prompt was something like 'everyone thinks Az is so virginal but he's actually fucked plenty through history, thank you very much.'

I don’t know how to take fancy food photos but wanted to share some good stuff I’ve eaten lately.

I'm hosting my first Pride themed Story time this Saturday and while I have the basics down and do regular family story times on Fridays, I feel like I want more out of this for the patrons. I'm ordering bracelets and stickers to hand out, but does anyone have any tips to jazz it up a little?

I need a body image pep talk, Peeps. I’m going to see My Chemical Romance in early July! At an outdoor venue. I want to wear one of my sleeveless lace-up overdresses with a sleeveless ruffled blouse. (And fluffy skirts, of course.)

I’m 56 and fat. (Look at me putting my therapist’s advice to work; fat is a value- neutral word!), so my upper arms are flabby. I’m starting gentle weight workouts to build my strength, but those won’t work miracles in a month.

Please help me quiet the Body Image Demons. If you have photos of fabulous fat people wearing fabulous things, that would be extra great.

Photo tax so I can keep telling the Body Image Demons to fuck off.

the same way fat is a neutral word you’ve got to believe that a canvas can house a beautiful piece of work regardless of its shape (Van Gogh and Pollock both hang in museums)

Also as fat ladies not in our 20’s we have some sacred duty to show the young ones that you can wear The Thing. also let’s be practical! You’ll be in the heat! We absolutely cannot sacrifice comfort for something as ephemeral as self consciousness! A little loosey goosey arm may be quirky but heat stroke is worse! And finally if outward perception must be addressed at all, anyone with issue or nasty judgment is HIGHLY unlikely to comment or remember the offending fashion, whereas someone that sees your outfit and falls immediately in love with the swagger? That’s going to stick!

Once you’re there you’ll hopefully be too blissed out by the live music euphoria to even remember what you’re wearing!

I've never submitted to a Zine, I don't know how much popularity politics play into it, but something moved me this year to seek out more community and art seems to consistently be a way of doing that, so if anyone could give me a linear intro to finding zines to submit to I'd appreciate it.
