Why Ladybug and Chat Noir shouldn’t reveal their identities yet
After 2x08 I’m sure everyone’s on the edge of their seat from the near reveal. It was the closest our two favorites have ever come to revealing their identities. Now, if you screamed when Tikki told Plagg not to say anything, you’re not alone. Why wouldn’t you want Marinette to know it’s Adrien behind the mask? The answer’s simple. Because they don’t love each other yet.
Now you’re probably thinking “what the heck, are you blind, they’re crazy for each other,” and that’s not wrong. It’s just only half right. It’s true that Marinette loves Adrien, and that Chat Noir loves Ladybug, but that’s it.
Picture this. The two reveal themselves to each other. Marinette sees the boy she loves, and Adrien sees his classmate. His friend. Sure, she’s Ladybug, but all Marinette has ever been to Adrien is his friend. He’s not in love with Marinette, he’s in love with Ladybug. And Marinette knows this. From now on, every time the two are together, Marinette will constantly be worried that who she is behind the mask won’t live up to the idol Ladybug that Adrien has fallen for. Likewise, Adrien will be afraid that Marinette only likes the civillian side of his personality; not his Chat Noir side. The two will have a constant doubt between themselves, and therefore their relationship will be destroyed before it even begins.
So how can we fix this? It’s simple. Their identities have to be kept secret until they have also fallen in love with their counter parts. Ladybug with Chat Noir, and Adrien with Marinette. Luckily for us, it seems Tikki already knows this. It’s also my belief that this is what season two is all about. In season two we have seen a large increase in Adrien paying attention to Marinette. He may not be in love with her (yet), but his interest in her has certainly developed, and if he’s pushed a little further, I have no doubt he’d fall for the clumsy girl in his class.
As the show goes on, it’s my guess that Adrien will fall in love with Marinette, and Ladybug will fall in love with Chat Noir. This will lead to conflicted feelings and actions; they will love both sides of each other, but as far as they know, those two sides are completely different people. They will be unsure who to go after, and there will be angst. “I love him, but I also love him.” “I love her, but I also love her.” As painful as it is to watch them struggle with their hearts, this will also be the perfect time for a reveal. After all, what better way to choose between two people than to combine them into one?
