I recently was blessed enough to see the Phantom of the Opera's US tour. This was a long time coming, being that I've loved it since I was twelve, but wow it was it magical! I just wanted to give my flowers to the actors and orchestra.
First off Isaiah Bailey is so powerful as a singer. I think that's really important to his character. But in that same way he lends, almost in juxtaposition, a real softness to the character. When he says "make your choice" his voice quivers, and it really got me good.
Everyone says that Midori Marsh is a doll, because she is, but I don't think anyone has spoken about the sheer quality of her performance. She had the audience wrapped around her finger. Everyone was giggling at her jokes. In a scene where the curtain is supposed to fall on her, there was some minor setbacks, but she just kept singing. I don't think you could've told that the set was a few seconds late if you weren't a superphan.
And on the topic of Carlotta. The chemistry between Christine and Carlotta was so good. They were so funny. But near the end, during Christine's breakdown, there's this moment where Carlotta goes to leave but Piangi stays to soothe her. You see a change in her face in that moment. Like "oh. Maybe I was wrong about this girl." AND THEN THE PHANTOM GOES AND KILLS PIANGI. It was really heartbreaking. To think this excellent characters choice wouldn't be a thing if not for Unsung!
Daniel Lopez has to also be the sassiest Raoul I've ever seen. He puffs up his chest whenever he enters a room. If anyone ever messes with Christine, he seems actively ready to throw hands. I don't know how to describe their dynamic other than small dog who bites anyone who comes near their owner. He gives such good rich boy vibes.
And the conductor! He was having so much fun!
