Anatidae are the biological family of birds that includes ducks, geese and swans. They are distributed on all the world's continents. These birds are adapted through evolution for swimming, floating on the water surface, and in some cases diving in at least shallow water. The family contains around 146 species in 40 genera. Generally herbivorous, and are monogamous breeders. Many migrate annually. A few species have been domesticated for agriculture, partipating in human culture for hundreds of years. Five species have become extinct since 1600, and many more are threatened with extinction.

The ducks like the lakes behind the dams and the wetlands at Zealandia, and the free food. They’ve learnt that if they hang around below the elevated feeding stations, the endangered native birds that frequent them are sure to drop or spill some food. This momma has set up camp a few yards away from the kakas’ feeding station, on the edge of some bushy cover. She escorts the string of ducklings across the clearing to mop up after the parrots, squawking at any humans that threaten to get in the way.
