“I’m sick of being dirt poor”

Still life from things I found around my room illustrating my ill feelings to being broke almost all the time but hey ho it’s the student life. And yes that is actual dirt in there, I had some of it left so I stuck it on some of the latest ‘What is colour?’ module pieces.

“Make like a tree and... “

Music: squid ethics - alone

Was originally going to make an installation piece with this idea but opted for making an amateur video instead because I felt like it. That and I felt like putting effort into messing around with lighting and editing instead of sticking a bunch of crusty leaves to a wall. It took more effort but I enjoyed doing this wee experiment. 

(you could say I was going to make an isolation installation about wanting to be alone)

“It seems I’ve landed myself in a sticky situation.”

Made from a bunch of sticks, glue and some paper. the pun speaks for itself here.

“You croft the wrong hoose fool!” 

I just wanted to make this because it reminds me of back home in Shetland seeing auld croft hooses littered around the countryside that and I had that sentence circulating in my head after going on a nostalgia trip of San Andreas. it makes no sense but it exists now. 

try and see if you can spot big smoke.

I used old book pages I found in my collected materials box. made entirely from that and some glue.

Piece idea:

“You croft the wrong house fool”

Make a peerie scene of an auld croft hoose. The title came from a skewed version of, “You picked the wrong house fool” from Big smoke, a character in GTA San Andres. This is kind of a stupid idea but I mostly just want an excuse to make a peerie croft hoose out of stones and straw or something.

Piece Idea:

“The last couple of months have been rather rocky”

Calendar made from wee rocks on paper. Scored out with different coloured pens or pencils. All the things I’ve had on every day. should probably scribble down the title of the piece somewhere around it.

Piece idea:

“It seems I’ve landed myself in a sticky situation”

Make one of those stick domes (like the ones Andy Goldsworthy makes) but smaller and glued together and stick (no pun intended) a wee tiny person inside, trapped, kneeling, arms extended. Just like a cage. Considering putting the title with it for it to make more sense why it was created. Sometimes the title of the piece is as much the piece as the piece is itself.

Piece Idea:

“book it like a librarian.”

Get some of the book pages you carved up and use that to make a sculpture of a person running like crazy, kicking up pages behind them. Running away from whatever problems or responsibilities are catching up with the person.

Piece Idea:

“Make like a tree and leaf me alone”

Get a bunch of leaves from all different trees and make a wee person out of that and potentially make a wee tree also. A scene of a person leaning next to a tree, arms crossed and head bowed. Could cut out a wee face for it to look peeved.

Update: Or I could do something more experimental and try some filmmaking... something to think about for later.

Piece Idea:

“Moving mountains”

Make a wee man pushing a pile of glued together rocks in his attempt at moving a mountain. Inspired by the Greek story of Sisyphus. Where Sisyphus is forced to push a boulder up a hill for it to only hit him and fall back down the hill for all eternity as punishment for the wrongdoings he had done. Futile and laborious tasks are reflected in this story which is something I can relate to more often than not.

Piece Idea:

“Whit an a’mest peerie body, she doesna’ keen whar shö’s gaain.”

(What a poor wee thing, she doesn’t know where she’s going)

Sculptural piece. Take rocks and mesh them together with a signpost that’s got all these different directions have a figure of a person (too typical). Maybe have a small track in which a wee figure is walking in circles. Could have different stages or just one person. There could be signs saying the way in every direction. But there is no diversion to the path.

Piece Idea:

“I’m sick of being dirt poor”

'I’m sick of being dirt poor' The letters are made of different materials.  ‘Sick’ should be made with bits of tissue paper with gunk on it, ‘dirt’ should be actual dirt with PVA glue into a mould or something and make ‘poor’ out of copper coins I have lying around. Or to make things a little bit simpler, get a cheap wallet or something and stick a bunch of dirt inside of it. Could just replace the letters with that or continue with the letters. Either way, It’s something I could do.

Arte Povera Project

This project is essentially a ‘Found Object’ module. Using what is around you in your environment without having to spend any money, using worthless materials and creating worth. Anything one can get their hands on can be valid materials in creating something that can be considered Arte Povera. For example, such worthless materials like soil, bits of wood, rags, scraps of newspaper can be used. 

Art Povera can often show trends and concepts like nature/industry dynamic, everyday objects become meaningful and a return to simple objects and messages. 

The ideas I’ve come up with thus far all base themselves around a sentence, a pun or a phrase. That was my main inspiration for them. My secondary inspiration was just recurring themes in my own life. However, land artist Andy Goldsworthy has inspired me because he uses the landscape and it’s materials to create his pieces. He uses raw materials such as leaves, sticks and rocks and creates something of meaning from something originally meaningless.
