Part of why I love Black Panther so much is that the villain isn’t a cartoonish “bwa ha ha I shall destroy the planet!” character. He has a thought process you can follow and understand. He’s human.

If Jack Black doesn’t get an Oscar nom for this, it is proof that sf/action movies are being discriminated against, because he was FLAWLESS as a teenage girl, absolutely invisible behind his character, and that deserves massive recognition of his awesomeness.

(I also appreciate the writing which had both girls calling each other out on perceived issues, and both girls acknowledging the fairness of those call-outs and subsequently valuing each other as equals and becoming buds. No girl-fights here, thank you.)

This movie was far more amazing than it should have been, and I’m pretty sure that was at least 90% because the cast was so fantastic.

Not once in the entire film did I forget Jack Black was a teenage girl. It was one of the most brilliant performances I have ever seen and I still can’t believe I’m saying that about Jack Black in Jumanji II.

Is it tropey as hell? Yes.

Do they subvert some of the tropes some of the time? Heck yes.

Did they know they were going to be tropey as hell and made it the best possible versions of the tropes when they weren’t subverting them? Hell fucking yes.

people often refer to captain marvel in the movies as captain woodface and zero charisma

Funny how no one looks at other, often serious superheroes and comments on their lack of “charisma.” I’ve noticed a distinct sexist trend since the film’s release wherein people are uncomfortable with Larson’s out-of-my-way-I-have-a-job-to-do characterization and label that as “wooden” because heaven forbid a woman not be animated and chipper all the time. Black Widow is one thing—she’s a minor character with little screen time—but a whole two hours of a woman looking determined and serious and vaguely angry at the world? Who wants to watch that? Shouldn’t she be smiling more?

Fans are clamoring to talk about how badass this is

But label this as a lack of effort, acting, and skill.

And of course, these reviews I’ve read insisting that Carol has no personality conveniently omit when she’s amusedly BAMF

Larson did a fantastic job, embodying a trained and serious soldier who isn’t inclined to let her guard down until she knows she can trust someone. That’s… a whole lot of superheroes. It’s nothing new. You all just don’t like watching a woman who can kick your ass.
