Pre-Arena portraits of Katniss and Peeta for the 74th Hunger games.
I wrap my arms tightly around his neck before he can order me to do push-ups or something. Instead he pulls me in close and buries his face in my hair. Warmth radiates from the spot where his lips just touch my neck, slowly spreading through the rest of me. It feels so good, so impossibly good, that I know I will not be the first to let go.
This is one of my favourite scenes from the book! Hope you love this as much as I do!
"Then there's Peeta just a few yards away. He looks so clean and healthy and beautiful, I can hardly recognize him. But his smile is the same whether in mud or in the Capitol and when I see it, I take about three steps and fling myself into his arms." — The Hunger Games, Chapter 27
I happen to be quite proud of this work! This scene is such a beautiful one, I wanted to bring it to life 💜💛

Including the black and white under the cut, because I think it reads well there too
And what if I said that Lucy Gray and Peeta are more cutthroat than Haymitch and Katniss — what then?
And what if I said that Lucy Gray and Peeta are more closed off emotionally than Haymitch and Katniss — what then?
I'd have to say I agree on both counts. It drives me crazy when people see both of them, but especially Peeta, as these marshmallows, when the strategies they are pulling are just breathtakingly Machiavellian.
And, at least in my reading of THG, Peeta's emotions are almost always just bubbling underneath the surface, and it's not all sunshine or innocence.
This isn't a bad thing. Just a true thing.
Katniss during Quell Training:
re-read the hunger games trilogy for the first time in 11 years and was immediatly consumed by the need to draw katniss everdeen as much as possible
THE white boy, THE babygirl, THE malewife, THE loverboy, THE master manipulator, THE pretty princess, THE liar extraordinaire, THE saint martyr, THE chronic yearner, PEETA EVERDEEN-MELLARK🥖🍞🥯🥨🥐🫓
is it just me, or does anyone else think it is a little insane that peeta, who literally died after touching a forcefield, is so quick to reach up to put his hand on the invisible wall that separates him from katniss and the jabberjays.
trying anything to comfort her as he is forced to watch the tortured look on her face.
Everlark collage with all the drawings!
I think the moment it was confirmed Katniss was Covey was actually before the new prequel came out, it was in Ballad. And it wasn’t because of the Hanging Tree song, or the cabin in the woods, or even her ability to make the birds quiet when she sings; it was when Lucy Gray sang the Meadow Song.
Because that wasn’t a song the Covey performed at the Hob or around District 12, it was a lullaby that was lovingly passed down to children who were being too fussy, who needed a melody to calm themselves.
Personally, I’m not complaining that Katniss is Covey. She’s still Seam, she’s still from District 12, and I don’t think it makes her the chosen one. If anything, to me it shows even more how she was at the very bottom of the food chain (sorry for the horrible metaphor), the most oppressed of the most oppressed in Panem, and she still was able to deafeat the system not because she was destined for it, but because despite her horrible circumstances she retained her compassion. It also shows how diluted culture often becomes in the face of oppression. But even with much of her Covey heritage unknown to her, she still has the same core traits that were important to them: family loyalty, survival and a rebellious spirit. (Also of course their connection with nature and music)
No one has to agree with me, but I liked the prequel, and I like that Katniss is covey.
the reason katniss can't deal with hijacked peeta in mockingjay isn't because he's totally different/never the same. it's because she has relied on him since the first book to keep her going. and now he needs help, but she still has to be the mockingjay, so she doesn't have the capacity to give it to him.
even haymitch (who is known to throw rocks at his friends) does a better job helping rehailitate peeta. prim's coming up with medical theories. finnick and gale help him.
but katniss can't ("i can't do this") because she's got too much going on already. i don't know why people take her word for it that peeta is gone and will never come back.
especially since he's with her for like two days and is suddenly quoting romantic moments between the two of them.
Cracks me up how Katniss kisses Peeta in the cave and wants more, but when Gale kisses her she has to stew in the woods for two hours and think about if she even liked it.
The transition from “oh that guy I see you hang around with, your cousin?” -> “that guy who I guess is your boyfriend” -> “that guy I’ve spent a considerable amount of my adolescence distressed about” is peak teenage boy when you consider Katniss barely shared any information about her and Gale. At this point I think Peeta has spent more time thinking about Katniss and Gale than either of them have.
But good on Peeta for not making this everyone’s problem like another teenage boy in the series who made similar jealous conclusions.
The first conversation is SO funny because Peeta’s really like “yeah I’m about to die but not before I get some intel”
Also up there with him asking if that was really the only time she has kissed Gale and Katniss being like “is this the time??” They’re so silly I love when they have little teenage moments
I love when we get the teenage moments :). These kids had a lot on their shoulders, but to fully appreciate the horror of what they were going through, we readers needed to always remember how young they were. These are the moments that are both heartbreaking (because while no people should ever have to experience this trauma, they especially shouldn’t at this age) and heartwarming because we see tiny hints of what their romance could have been had it been allowed to unfold naturally and under different circumstances.
do you guys think the night after katniss (and peeta) won by using the berries and therefore rebelling/outsmarting the capitol, asterid was scared for her and prim? do you think she stayed up all night and made sure there were no ashes in the fireplace? do you think she watched prim and refused to let her out of her sight? remembering sid and willamae abernathy and their horrible, horrible fate and knowing, if president snow decided to hand down that same destiny, she and her child would be powerless to escape.
Probably people more coherent than I am have talked about this before, but I feel like the biggest difference between Leroux Erik and ALW Erik besides the deformity and the fact I think ALW Erik is supposed to be a little bit younger than Leroux's, is that Leroux Erik does everything he can to try appearing "normal" to Christine (the decor and fake flowers in the lair) while ALW Erik does everything he can to make Christine think of him as some supernatural force even after revealing himself as a Phantom instead of an Angel.
So while Leroux Erik desperately wants a normal life with a normal house and a normal wife he can take out on Sundays, ALW Erik wants to convince Christine that it's so much sexier and cooler to acutally hang out in the darkness with him as Hades to her Persephone. It's a contrast I appreciate.
