I'm not gonna lie, I'd LOVE for visual novels other than Doki Doki Literature Club, Hatoful Boyfriend, and a bunch of shitty western parodies to get really popular in the west. It's such an amazing and far too underutilized medium that people both readers and creators hella missing out on everyday, and so much more would get translated as a result with many amazing or even okay works being found and given new light. I'd LOVE for my favourite visual novels of all time especially to get popular and hear people's opinions and perspectives on it.
Now, with that said, I also can't help but worry what the hell The Discourse TM would be like if that actually happened. Like, visual novel fans here know about the complexities and nuances of their favourite eroges and eroguro nonsense. Tsukihime, Umineko, Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, you name it, just imagine The Discourse TM on these motherfuckers. You KNOW that shit would be HORRIBLE! Plus, just think of all the racist shit and censorship debates and policies that would spew from it calling japanese people pedos and sexual degenerates and shit. It ain't even difficult to imagine, let alone all the nuance of these works getting watered down to HELL and back. I still would love for visual novels to become more popular even knowing the risks, but there are DEFINITELY risks with said possibility and blessings from said possibility probably not happening at least anytime soon.
