American Pelecinid Wasp

The pelecinid wasp is parasitoid that feeds its young on June bug grubs. Females use that long scorpion like tail to lay their eggs. With such a long specialized ovipositor, one might think they're a type of icheumon wasp, but they are their own species. Native to North, Central and South America.

I was so excited to be able to get a picture of this wasp. I remember I was having an absolutely lousy day and taking my little mental health walk when this beautiful lady just came floating on by. (She was a fairy)

Made my day. That was months ago, and I finally remembered to post.

American Pelecinid Wasp, Pelecinus polyturator

My favorite animal :) should have drawn them a while back, but you know how it is

American pelecinid wasps are my favorite mostly because of how weird they are. Their abdomen is SO long and curly that I had no idea what order the insect belonged to until I picked them up from the grass. They use their ovipositor to parasitize june beetle larvae in the ground. My favorite part about this species though, is that virtually all of them here in Canada are female and reproduce via parthenogenesis. I love them very much :)

American Pelecinid Wasp, Pelecinus polyturator

The American pelecinid wasp is a parasitoid wasp that lays its eggs in the larvae of June beetle grubs buried in the soil. They do not sting. All photos above are females except the last two, which show the shorter abdomen of the male.

i went on a walk off the bike trail and i saw at least thirty six-spotted tiger beetles. there are four in the last photo. at least two would alight with every few steps i took. this is absurd
