i used to be such a wimp about being in the woods in the dark, like only a few years ago I was a huge wimp about it, but now I'll take Frodo out at night and hear the most hideous, "this sounds like how i'd imagine some horrific monster that was once human but can't quite vocalize like a human anymore" sound and it will scare Frodo (which isn't saying much because he is like 10 pounds and a wimp) and I'll be like "hold on buddy I need to check this out" and the flashlight will almost immediately burn out as I get closer and I go "well I'd better go find another flashlight and solve this mystery" and that doesn't work and then I go out with my dad's infrared camera and then the sound changed to the more typical juvenile barred owl sound

4: what sections of a bookstore do you browse? I'm more a library user but I go straight to the scifi/fantasy section. Might take a glance at horror, and if that doesn't get me anywhere I'll go look at comics, then on to nonfiction for like, pop history.

7: is there a series/book that got you into reading? I've been super into reading ever since I was able to SO LIKE, the 1990s Hooked on Phonics curriculum lol? I was struggling to learn from school so my parents ordered that from the commercial. I fell out of my reading habits for a few years in college before discovering asoiaf, which rekindled my love of reading and got me to be more adventurous with the stuff I picked.

19: most disliked popular books? There are 3 that I've read maybe like 5+ years ago that to this day I will still get randomly mad about: The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet: it read like someone's very twee 2007 roleplay forum OCs interacting with eachother. Leviathan Wakes: Cardboard stock characters throughout. Badly written (and I am not that much of a stickler for prose). Its plot points and character motivations were so deeply contrived like at one point the plot needs both protags' curiosity to outweigh their self preservation so it just, does, suddenly. All Systems Red (Murderbot #1): The most I can say about it is that fans defend against my main criticism with "those things aren't described/don't receive much attention because Murderbot doesn't care about that stuff" which like, at a certain point if your POV character is half assing the narration then you need to change your POV character so they're a good narrator.

20: what are things you look for in a book? Oh man IDK I've liked a lot of different things that I don't think have much in common outside of "they were pretty good to read and didn't overwhelm me with bad metaphors". When I'm picking out a book it's usually either a classic, influential, or it seems like something related to what I'm writing about and I'd like to see other approaches. But I guess there are a few traits I always like to see: dark stuff written by an author who clearly believes things don't need to be like that, themes of romanticism versus reality, mysteries left deliberately unsolved, a decent attempt to recognize everyone's full humanity (particularly combined with a willingness to acknowledge the worst parts of humanity), flawed protagonists who do things I don't always agree with (or don't always do the thing that would make them "likable"), when the author is clearly drawing from a lot of different sources that they themselves are passionate about, and when things get weird and colorful and maybe even do things I haven't seen before.

Live the idea of the evil galactic Catholic Church empire being like “we need to send messages across the galaxy really fast and we don’t have farcasters or safe ftl and AIs are a sin” and so their solution is just shooting their guys across the galaxy so fast that they’re turned to mush and then these guys have to get rebuilt and resurrected by the cruciform-shaped ai-designed parasite they all have. So they can deliver a message. This is really what sci-fi is all about.
