a lot of people have been bringing up the once and future king with the whole lancelot discussions we’ve been having and i guess i just wanted to like. put my thoughts out lol.

under the cut bc itll b a bit long, and warning that its gonna be kinda negative. i know this book is like important to a lot of people and meaningful to you and thats great this is not at all to attack you lol

i agree with every single point of this and also i hate the hegemony which he has on modern arthurian fiction. like pretty much all published authors either draw on him or are responding to him and i think its like an echo chamber of bad characterization and bigotry

like. you CAN enjoy material, you CAN like it, you CAN be nostalgic over it, but you HAVE to think critically on what it is that you’re imbibing especially nowadays and especially if you’re white. to brush off criticisms FROM poc and other minorities about toafk IS concerning, and if you are part of a minority group and are cool with toafk, that’s chill but remember you DO NOT speak for everyone. you CAN like it, but you have to be aware of it – there’s this distinction between being ignorant to it, BEING WILLFULLY ignorant to it in the face of opposition, and being aware and still engaging in it, and finally being aware and NOT engaging in it. as long as you are conscientious, i don’t think there’s a big problem.

#i will be honest. i was boiling with rage within the first chapter and knowing th white’s family’s history with colonialism in india?#it’s NOT a pretty picture especially when you take in all his race allegories#as an ethnic. i DESPISE this book. i HATE it. but#i DO respect if someone else finds value in it but only as LONG as you are aware of its shortcomings#and there are. many#arthuriana
